  1. Not close. Stubbs full seasons before becoming a Brewer he hit .226, .233, .223, .261. Loney's only once hit under .267 and that was .249 in 2012. Back the Brewers thought Stubbs would be a 25 HR guy and that would offset a low BA. Stubbs compares more to Ike Davis. Loney's comparables through age 29 include Chris Chambliss, Mark Grace, Dan Driessen, Wally Joyner and Sean Casey. That's not a bad list.
  2. You can't base what Melvin would do based on what another GM was willing to do for a different player. Capps hasn't had the success at the major league level that Thornburg has. Thornburg is no worse that 50-50 to be in Brewer rotation on opening day. Capps has never started a game in the majors, and probably needs more time in the minors. Besides it's been reported Melvin turned down Davis for Thornburg.
  3. Moreland! Forgot about him. Sure like him more than Davis.
  4. Loney and Francisco are the same player: Oliver projections Loney: .277/.330/.397 wRC+99 Francisco: .242/.302/.459 wRC+106 Loney's only good year (last year) was all BABIP driven. Why would Loney project below his career averages of .285/.340/.421, playing in MP and in the NL Central instead of the NL West, a pitchers division? And who is this Oliver and why isn't he tending his farm in Hooterville? I realize the metrics come out similar, but honestly to say Loney and Francisco are the same player is indeed a stretch. Defensively, it's not a contest either.
  5. Apparently Brewer offer topped out at $8 million if he met incentives. I would have advised Hart not to take that either. That's an offer that says they really weren't as interested as we were led to believe. I think deep down they preferred a lefty bat at 1B.
  6. If the Brewers can't afford a guy like Loney, they are indeed in trouble and/or salaries have finally gotten out of hand. Loney on a 3 year $24 million (give or take a few million) deal shouldn't be out of their reach. If someone emerges from within, they should be able to move him down the road if he puts up his career numbers.
  7. LOL I just posted that in the other thread. Now look for Seattle to offer Justin Smoak for Tyler Thornburg.
  8. There are negative PR aspects to this for a team not needing them. Hart was a popular player and had he returned would have been welcomed back by most. I see that for the first time there are reports Melvin is talking to Loney's agent. Loney may be a decent fit at the right price (certainly better in my opinion than Davis), but he'd just be another guy. Fans love the home grown talent. Anyone think Weeks might be given a spring trial at 1B? Having never played there before hasn't stopped them in the past.
  9. Halton should be thrilled with this news. His chances of making the team rise considerably with Hart out of the picture. Even if they do find another 1B, it's likely to be a LH hitter meaning their could be platoon opportunities.
  10. Sad news. So much for all the talk about his love for the Brewers. It always comes down to money. Very shortsighted on his part too. He won't put up nearly the numbers in Safeco that he would in MP and that might cost him more on his next deal.
  11. That doesn't sound good considering the premium they paid for Cano. Their offer may one he simply can't refuse.
  12. Nobody is a playoff team at this point. There's 162 game schedule to be played. Wasting prime years of Gomez, Lucroy and Braun and the final year of Ramirez to not compete for the playoffs isn't in Melvin's DNA nor should it be. If the choice is Hart or one of the names mentioned in a trade, they should go with Hart. The rest of what's out there is significantly less than what a healthy Hart offers.
  13. I would bet that Doug Melvin thinks he already has that person on the roster--Juan Francisco. Caleb Gindl figures to be a key LH bench bat when he's not starting. Schafer is also still around as the only backup option in CF. Green might be in the mix to fight with Francisco as well.
  14. The biggest problem with Davis is he's absolutely atrocious vs lefties. Check out his line vs lefties over his MLB career so far. .204 BA .268 OBP .334 SLG .602 OPS You would have to be crazy to not platoon Davis if he's on your team and that would make me be unwilling to give up all that much for him. His problem vs lefties is the biggest reason why i don't want him on the Brewers because Roenicke has stated not being a big fan of platoons in general and there likely wouldn't be an obvious righthanded platoon mate on the roster to push Roenicke to never start Davis with a lefty on the mound. I think a case could be made for Sean Halton. His splits didn't show it in 2013 but in 2012, he posted a .941 OPS vs. lefties in AAA. There's also a rumor floating that the Brewers are interested in Brett Pill, but he's hit RHP a lot better than LHP.
  15. Well they wouldn't want weeks and Lee isn't worth $25 million per year, so no. Phils would have to pick up $8 million or per year in addition to taking Weeks and Lohse for me to be interested.
  16. I'm with you up to the point you mentioned Turnbow. His last Brewer outing (ironically at Wrigley less than 24 hours before Gallardo tore his ACL) was the ugliest outing I think I've ever seen in 55 years of being a baseball fan. Yost had to remove him with one out to go to save him further embarrassment in a game they were already down 19-7. What a memory!
  17. I don't think any of the pitchers you mentioned will be in the rotation to start the season unless Estrada get's traded. I really believe the Brewers will add a good SP and that will make estrada the number 5, and the Brewers favor him over anyone else. I don't agree. There are just too many guys on the cusp or already into their major league careers to be stunted at this stage by bringing in another mediocre veteran. I do believe that it's really a 2 man race for the 5th starter job between Thornburg and Smith, with the odd guy out, going to the pen. Remember Thornburg, when he wasn't starting last year compiled some good relief outings. Nelson, Hellweg, Burgos will be starting in Nashville and available should those guys falter or if and when another starter goes down.
  18. Didn't they just sign Furcal to play 2nd base too? Unless there's a 3ed team, it doesn't make any sense.
  19. I'd pass simply on the basis of what he puts people through every time he's out there. Sure sometimes he'll come through the the big strikeout but who needs that drama? There's other guys out there with closing experience who are available that are a bit more efficient.
  20. I think that was soooo this morning. Haven't heard anything about him being a priority since before lunch. #HotStoveDrama I know, but it sounds like the Brewers are desperately trying to find the right deal with Corey Hart. These other guys are back-up options. We will see if they can agree on a deal or if Hart just has a much better offer on the table from another team. I don't think those other guys are as much back-up options as they are leverage. I think Hart's going to get a one year deal for around $8 million with a hefty vesting option for the 2nd based on plate appearances. Overall his cost is going to come in around 2/$20 million. I really think that's affordable in this day and age especially with both Ramirez and Weeks off the books for 2015.
  21. It's been so quiet on Morse, I'm all for the Brewers going all big and monster (right-handed or not) and let a motivated Morse establish value on a one-year deal blasting balls half-way up towards Bernie's slide. Wouldn't he be a safer (and cheaper) bet than Hart at this point? Morse isn't the first guy to get frustrated and banged up first year at Safeco. Rotoworld October 16th -- Michael Morse will undergo surgery on his left wrist Wednesday to shave down a bone outgrowth. "Doctors believe the outgrowth occurred as a result of trauma from an injury back in May. It's a relatively minor procedure, as Morse will be able to resume some activities within four weeks and should be totally healed within 6-8 weeks. An impending free agent, Morse will enter spring training with a clean bill of health." 130 career games at first base, 6'5" target. I don't understand why not either. My goodness, he scared me every time he came up against the Brewers in the past. It's not like he's an all or nothing guy either. We're talking about a guy who as recently as 2011 put up .303/.360/.550 with 31 HR and 95 RBI. Yet Melvin is looking at trades for guys like Ike Davis?? One time in particular, I remember Morse taking Axford deep to RF to tie a game late after fouling off a bunch of pitches. Axford just couldn't get it past him and before you knew it, boom, tie game.
  22. You'll learn that any time a Brewer player has a breakout season, some on this board will suggest trading that player. I call it the "Bill Hall" syndrome. Of course not every player is Bill Hall. I'd rather see the brewers get better with their drafting/signing of minor leaguers and give them a farm that is proven to develop players then stay in a vicious cycle of trading. I agree. You aren't going to continue to fill Miller Park by constantly dealing off popular players who are at their peak. Right now Gomez and Lucroy are the faces of the franchise. In light of the Braun fiasco, they are essentially untouchable not just because of their production. They can do that in Tampa/St. Pete because nobody goes to their games anyway. Gomez is still going to have great trade value in 2 years. Lets enjoy him while we have him. Besides the drop off from him to Schafer is dramatic as it would be if Lucroy were traded. Lets develop his replacement first and then see what you can get for him, as they did with Hardy.

  24. Huh?? Morrison is 2 years younger than Gamel, and Gamel hasn't played in 2 years. Morrison's played the last two years in a very tough hitters park surrounded by a weak lineup. Put him in Miller Park, in the Brewers lineup and he could be a 20-25 HR, 80-85 RBI guy assuming health. It depends on what it takes to get him. He's a buy low guy. When you buy low, you have to trust that he's better than his recent form. He at least has had some success at this level to go off of. Conversely Gamel at 28 has never produced in the big leagues and has no recent form to go off of. They would be extremely foolish to count on either Gamel's health or ability a third straight year.
  25. I'm starting to believe Hart is going elsewhere. The last hurdle was supposed to be his getting cleared to play which happened earlier this week. I think the Brewers probably had a price in mind and he's turned it down. Now I could be completely wrong and his signing is announced later today, but I'm starting to think Logan Morrison is the opening day 1B. Hopefully that means the end to the Juan "Fan" Cisco experiment. Morrison figures to be a 20 HR guy in MP. Maybe it will mean Halton has a role too against lefties and a RH power bench bat.
