  1. Roenicke was just as awful as a player himself. My guess is he relates to guys like that.
  2. Absolutely ridiculous. Sit a 25 year old SS, in favor of a 36 year old who's hitting .186 and has fanned once every 2 ABs and a 32 year old who is struggling to maintain an OPS over .500? Ok, so Bianchi is not a top prospect. But what else is there? They couldn't use a SS with say a .255/.305/.355 line instead of what they have (I guess not, look at what Maysonet did)? Maybe he could be better, but unless he plays how would we know? You'd think Fiers success would make them question their cautious approach to players that come up who weren't heralded. I'd release both Ransom and Izturis, start Bianchi, and bring back Maysonet to be the backup.
  3. They have nothing to lose playing him over the likes of Ransom or Izturis.
  4. Innings limits are arbitrary and can be adjusted. The fact that he's efficient means what may have been a 140 or 150 inning limit, might now be 160 or 165. 100 innings for a guy like Rogers is not the same as 100 for a guy like Burgos. Not only is it the pitches thrown but the number of times a guy has "high pitch" innings. High pitch innings stress arms. Who worked harder, the guy who threw 85 pitches over 4 innings, or the guy who went 7 or 8 in 85 pitches? Burgos is pitching his way into consideration for next years rotation in Milwaukee. He's certainly not a lock but if he continues like he has, he could find himself in that spot and that means they'll need 180 innings minimum out of him next year. They may want him up around 160. Chris Sale is on pace for 200 innings for the White Sox, and the most he ever logged is 71. Burgos is older than Sale.
  5. I'm looking forward to a rotation of Hi, Ty and Yo. There's no need to trade Yo. They potentially have 7 guys competing for next years rotation (Yo, Thornburg, Burgos, Estrada, Fiers, Peralta, Narveson) 8 if you throw Rogers in there, and all but Yo and Narveson who'll be first year arby eligible, will be playing for near major league minimum. That opens up tons of possibilities to add talent. Undoubtedly they'll look to add one veteran arm, help in the bullpen and my guess is one big bat. But they have money to spend. They'll either get talent back in deals for Greinke, and Marcum, or take several high picks. I'd hang on to Gallardo.
  6. He's got a WHIP under 1 in those innings. The 109 2/3 he's logged are more like 90 in the amount of pitches thrown. "if the Brewers plan on pitching him in the AFL"? AFL? The way he's pitched, he's earned a look in the NL before this season is over. How Hi is up?
  7. Nothing bothers me more than officials in any sport that fail to see the big picture. I'm still bothered by how my very modest high school basketball career ended on an officials call, not coincidentally one that a future major league umpire was part of (I'll leave it to your imagination who that was, but think Oshkosh). Seems for a tournament game, someone supporting our team brought their elderly grandfather. The game was nip and tuck in the 4th quarter, and after a close call, the elderly gent with obviously not quite all his youthful faculties and who was seated in the front row due to is frail condition got up and protested by stepping on the court. Apparently feeling threatened by this 80 something year old frail man, the 30 something year old official issued a warning both to him and our bench that the next time it will result in a T!. You guessed it, with the score tied and well under a minute to play, a ball went out of bounds off our opponent and the ref missed the call. Up stood our senile fan to once again protest (on the opposite side of the court no less where we could not have stopped him) and boom, technical foul against us. They hit the free throw, and another when we now have to foul and we lose the game by 2 points, ending our seasons and our careers and leaving a bad taste in our mouth that lasts forever. Our coach tried explaining all this to the officials, but they refused to reverse the call. Every time I see an official or an umpire lose perspective on a play it always brings me back to that time. It happened Saturday when the umpire misinterpreted Greinke's actions and tossed a starting pitcher in the first inning.
  8. I didn't say any were good options. That's why I see a minor deal/waiver claim in the offing. Brewers may be privy to someone becoming available in the next couple days. Guys coming off the DL elsewhere means roster moves. Or Melvin might offer the Padres a bag of ball and bring Kotsay back in here for a month and see if he can provide spark.
  9. I wish people would quit hoping for this scenario. It's extremely rare for it to happen in modern MLB. Greinke could go to the Rangers, help them win the World Series, and decide he's perfectly happy in Arlington. I would say that's a more likely scenario. Hope is a good thing and this scenario isn't baseless. Greinke did sit in on the Brewers draft. The Rangers acquired Cliff Lee and he returned to Philly. Greinke has an independent streak which is part of the reason teams are a bit shy about him. I think they fear just that scenario. We may all hope the market for Greinke is hot, but I'm not sure it is. The bar is to get something better back than the draft picks. That's not a low bar. Teams that are waltzing into playoffs and think Greinke would help them in the postseason, might take a look at his lackluster performance there last year and have second thoughts too. Rangers have lots of cash, but will have to find a way to pay Hamilton to keep him. I'm not sure they'd sink $250 to $300 million into 2 players, particularly Greinke and Hamilton combination.
  10. The last time Rogers went 7 shutout innings early June, he gave up 10 runs in his next start. Let's hope he takes some confidence from this one into his next.
  11. Hard to see what the logical move here is. Bianchi needs to be up, but at the expense of either Ransom or Izturis. It could be Patterson, or Jordan Brown, either of whom would allow some room at 1B to bump up Morris. Schafer's cooled off again, but he'd replace Morgan presumably at some point. There also could be a minor deal in the works to fortify the roster for the last ditch push to get back in it out of the break. Reed Johnson? You could always move him again before Aug 1.
  12. I don't think offering Marcum for $12 or $13 million is a no-brainer other than for Marcum who'd probably take it at this point. A lot depends on what else is out there, whether they'd still make a play for Greinke as a FA even after dealing him, or Hamilton (I heard Phil Rogers mention his connection to the Narron's just this weekend), who they'd get in a deal for Greinke, etc. Letting a player who has a large salary go without draft pick compensation isn't letting him go for nothing. Substantial salary relief like they will get when K-Rod and Wolf depart isn't "nothing".
  13. Just needed to add the obligatory "Jesus saves!"
  14. "We have GM that sincerely believes you can build a World Series team with the likes of Yuni B at shortstop" Did I miss something? The Brewers won 96 games with not only the likes of Yuni B at SS but the real thing and were 2 wins short of the World Series through no fault of Yuni B who hit .333 and drove in 5 runs in the NLCS. Doesn't that prove he's right that you don't need All Stars at every position? Despite the venom directed at him as the "worst ever, blah, blah, blah" Yuni had his moments and knocked in 68 runs. I wish they'd have kept him in hindsight. Maybe he would have got hurt too, but likely not, and he's better than what they have now.
  15. Exactly what I've been thinking. DFA Parra and Dillard, and lets see Henderson and Stetter. Another thought is could Burgos pitch out of the Brewer pen?
  16. Hard to quantify that. I just prefer to think of him as bad.
  17. Hard to quantify that. I just prefer to think of him as bad.
  18. Gaby Sanchez had an OPS of .523 before today, and they aren't all that far back in the WC. Besides they sold themselves as being all in to sell tickets. Lee had no say on this one. Marlins were not on his no trade list.
  19. Deal is being discussed on Marlin game telecast. Interesting in light of the reports that it was Ozzie that had told Kenny Williams to deal Lee back in the day for failing to break up a double play. What is also interesting is that the Marlins are in worse position than the Brewers and they are buyers.
  20. I find it very, very interesting that the Thornburg and Burgos, the number one options at each of the top 2 levels are both starting the same day as Wolf. Wolf likely won't start again for almost 2 weeks. Lets hope he can manage to keep them in the game today.
  21. Yesterday, in the 3rd inning Block kept mentioning how many hits the Brewers had, mentioning at one point that 7 out of the last 8 hitters had reached safely. But he never explained why they had only scored 1 run to that point. Mixed in there of course was a caught stealing, a double play, and Morgan getting thrown out at 3rd trying to stretch a double. He never mentioned that at all. This at a time when most of his audience had just gotten out of work and would not have been privy to that information. The info on the hits was fine, but he left out the context that resulted in so few runs produced.
  22. Shortstop is a hole, but this team won 96 games with Yuni Betancourt at SS. They have a 25 year old SS at AAA hitting over .300 too. You can win without a top SS. You can't win without solid pitching and losing Greinke creates a bigger hole than they have at SS. You take the best possible package back regardless of position with emphasis on getting back pitching. If you are very confident that somehow you can sign Greinke after trading him maybe that changes things some.
  23. Had to listen to Block yesterday for about 30 minutes while driving. The guy is terrible, amatuerish and almost to the point of unlistenable. Not only is his delivery uneven and halting, but his play description is late and non descriptive. He can't get out what he's intending to say. Spit it out Joe for gosh. He's got the perfect vocal tone for radio, but other than that he has no business doing baseball at all much less at the major league level. He's the equivalent of the Ted Baxter character on Mary Tyler Moore show. Just awful. He needs a script and live action sports don't come with one.
  24. Don't know if this one makes up for that one at Wrigley in 07, but it was sure nice to see.
