Possible 2011 Season Call Ups
JohnBriggs12 replied to mrpackersfan1's topic in Brewers Minor League Talk
It depends on how much space they have on the 40 man. They'll probably have room for Fiers, Gindl and Green who are not on it now. I think they will make room for Fiers by removing DiFelice. They'll also use Herrera's current spot for either Herrera, or for Meadows. If they do that they'd also have room for a 3rd catcher. My choice would be Rivera, but who knows, they are likely to bring back Nieves. So here's my guess: Removed from 40 man: McClendon (dealt to Mets), DiFelice, Herrera. Added to 40 man and called up: Green, Gindl, (Nieves or Rivera), Fiers, Meadows Added off 60 day: Stetter Recalls of current 40 man guys: Gamel, Farris, Braddock and Peralta -
"In 1961, the Braves placed Covington on waivers" Another example of the complete and utter ineptitude of then Braves GM, John McHale which ultimately led to the Braves departing for Atlanta, not so ironically after having been sold to a group that included McHale who uttered the infamous lie that "the Braves will be here today, tomorrow and as long as they are welcome" even after the group had already secretly made the deal to move the team.

Your first place Pittsburgh Pirates
JohnBriggs12 replied to Invader3K's topic in Milwaukee Brewers Talk
Their next two road trips are brutal At Atlanta for 4, followed by 3 in Philly. Then after a relatively soft week at home, they go to SF for 3 and then to Milwaukee. Lets see where they are then. -
Casey McGehee's struggles: how much leash does he get?
JohnBriggs12 replied to Robideaux's topic in Milwaukee Brewers Talk
If he's a .750 OPS guy, that's significant enough improvement to make a huge difference. I believe he's certainly capable of doing that over 60 games. That's not to say I wouldn't want a lefty bat not named Counsell that can play 3B two or three times a week and be a viable PH too. -
I've always believed Yuni and Casey could at least turn it around and put up decent numbers over a couple months. It's the old theory that guy's numbers for a season generally end up being similar to what's on the back of their bubble gum cards. That would mean a good couple months for both those guys. It's very early but Casey's 6 for 19 and Yuni's 6 for 15 since the break. The Brewers absolutely need another infielder if anything to replace Counsell on the bench who's basically played himself out of any role save a guy you'd put up there to sacrifice bunt. I still think Betemit makes the most sense because he can alternate at 3B. Roenicke can go with the hot hand between Wilson and Betancourt and get enough offense out of that position.

I'll give it a try: 1. Tyler Thornburg - He's making the loss of Odorizzi a little easier to take. I wouldn't be surprised if he's in rotation in 2013 2. Michael Fiers - Yeah, he's 26, but he got a late start and his numbers are the best by far of anyone in the top two levels. See you in September Michael. 3. Nic Bucci - Never has been overmatched against older players 4. Wily Peralta - Making solid progress. May earn a Sept. call up. 5. Taylor Green - Can't ignore the success he's having. In the mix for 3B job, but not until 2012 6. Yadiel Rivera - Has a long way to go, but is exciting. 2014 should be his target Let the Starlin Castro comparisons begin. 7. Logan Schafer - A little concern about his power numbers dropping off from 09, but I expect a Taylor Green return to prominence. 8. Kyle Heckathorn - I expect him to put up good solid numbers 9. Caleb Gindl - In line for Kotsay's role in 2012? 10. D'Vontrey Richardson - All the signs are pointing to this guy fulfilling his promise My sleeper is Sean Halton. Nobody talks about this guy, but he's improved as he's risen. If he puts up numbers next year in Nashville like he is in Huntsville this season, he'll keep pressure on Gamel for sure.

Jeff Baker is not a horrible alternative. LeMahieu has tremendous upside and he can play anywhere in the If including 3B. He's probably ready right now. The problem with relying on Ramirez is that as good as he is, he's not in the class of the middle of the order guys on the other contenders (I'm not counting Pittsburgh). He's just too inconsistent. He's better suited to be that 3rd guy. They also do not have that 2nd big bat. That could change if they went out and got Fielder of course, but really would Ricketts pay Fielder $200 million? I think not. Attanasio is more likely to do that than Ricketts. Your Cubs would be much better off with a complete youth movement or you can expect more of the same.

Look, there are plenty of examples of players having horrible long stretches not unlike McGehee and coming out of it and closing out a season strong. It seems to me that we went through this with Jenkins a few times. You can't realistically expect an organization that committed to a guy to not give that guy ample time to get himself straightened out. We know Melvin is looking around for a veteran to rectify the situation and it appears there are some veterans available. Melvin prefers bringing in a veteran in a hot pennant race. Green is having a fine season, but he is as his name implies, he's very green. A lot of GM's think this way. Last year Daniel Hudson was dominating at AAA, but Kenny Williams didn't trust his being able to break in during a race so he dealt him to Arizona for Edwin Jackson. Now long term that looks like a really dumb deal because they didn't make the playoffs even though Jackson pitched well for them down the stretch. I think we'll see a Betemit or a Dobbs or some other guy brought in to at least platoon with McGehee, and Green will head into spring with a shot at earning the full time job.

If putting up numbers in AAA meant instant success at the major league level, rumors would be rampant about teams wanting to pick up 35 year old Cody Ransom, who can play 3B and SS and currently has a 1.055 OPS for Reno and guys like Lyle Mouton would have been major league All Stars. Green's played just 85 games at AAA, and has never played in the majors. The thought that "he has nothing to prove at AAA" is wishful thinking for a guy who was slowed by injuries the previous two seasons. He needs to prove he can put up numbers over a full season at AAA. I'm sure the Brewers are well aware of Green and that Melvin has poured over reports from his scouts and Don Money, who knows a thing or two about playing 3B. But it's obvious they don't think it's smart to stick him in the middle of a heated pennant race.
