  1. If your definintion of "great stuff" is based entirely on the radar gun, then yeah, his stuff isn't great. Cliff Lee hits, what, 92-93 on the gun? Is his "stuff" not great too? Narveson's got an excellent change and a very good curve that he commands very well (sort of like Lee in that regard too), that he uses to set up his 88-89 fastball. When your location isn't off game after game, it's not happenstance either, it's a skill. If you look inside his 2010 numbers (which I would argue WAS a breakout year), he had a better WHIP as a starter last year than Gallardo.
  2. Not sure I understand the hatred for this guy. He's had a solid major league career. His numbers aren't great but he's played the majority of time in pitchers parks. He's had all of 11 AB's as a Brewer. There's no reason to think he won't be able to produce numbers similar to what Inglett did last year in a similar role.
  3. Absolutely. Not only does an extra day between starts keep starters fresh, having Estrada on a regular turn keeps him sharper than having 10 days between starts. Estrada may not miss a ton of bats but his stuff is generally good enough to keep guys off the sweet spot and he's efficient with his pitches. Those guys tend to get jobs because those skills have value. Look at Nelson Figueroa for instance.
  4. That's my feeling exactly. I'd rather spend on a few premium players than sign middling guys like Hardy to multiyear deals. You can get close to recent Hardy-like production for considerably less than a $15 million commitment.
  5. Manny Parra can't translate his ability into results. Guys like that usually find themselves shuffled from team to team. It's incredible that the Brewers have shown the patience they have with this guy compared say to Villanueva (who the Blue Jays are raving about by the way). I just don't see it happening and I will be surprised if he's a Brewer in September.
  6. Unless he bombs badly tonight, I'd just leave Estrada in the rotation until Greinke comes back. Then he can be optioned to make room. The real question is who on the staff goes when Hawkins returns. I think they are going to try to extend his rehab as long as possible and wait to see if someone else comes up a little sore. With Parra, it's not such a mystery since both Stetter and Braddock have options.
  7. I would think Maldanado clears waivers easily especially this time of year when most teams rosters are full. He also can't refuse an assignment so I think the chances of losing him are slim. Any chance Kintzler had of staying around (and he really had very little) were eliminated with his shaky outing Sunday. He made the team as the designated "option out" guy.
  8. With Morgan in there and Hart and Lucroy back, my lineup would look like this: Morgan Hart Braun Fielder Weeks McGehee Betancourt Lucroy Pitcher I do agree it's too early to give up on Gomez. He's not the main reason the team is 0-4. I would play Morgan some, but Gomez has to have 150 or so AB's to get a true test.
  9. Exactly. So last year they passed on Daniel Hudson and Beachy? Just think if they had a rotation of Hudson, Beachy, Gallardo, Wolf and Narveson, and still had Escobar and Lawrie? Sure they would have had to find someone to replace Fielder but Dunn was out there among others. Narveson is a good pitcher who's just now reaching his potential.
  10. Melvin has done this in the past. He took Moeller in the Sexson deal too because the D-Backs wanted him gone.
  11. To read anything more into this series other than the Brewers are a bad match up with the Reds especially in Cincinnati is silly. Brewers have for the most part a flyball/strikeout pitching staff. They are very vulnerable to a team like the Reds that has power up and down the lineup playing in a band box. Wolf and Marcum fanned 12 guys in 8 2/3 innings. But they allowed 10 runs because they combined for 7 walks and allowed 3 HR. On the other hand Reds pitchers threw strikes, didn't allow a lot of baserunners, and gave up solo HR.
  12. Because it didn't make sense to put a team in Florida in the AL West? Seriously, travel costs are a major expense for major league baseball. There's also the time factor involved in travel. Teams are aligned geographically for sound business reasons. It also doesn't hurt the Rays that there are very many retired folks in Florida from the major eastern markets.
  13. I took a look at the box score today and Betancourt saw 10 pitches in 4 ab's. Kotsay took 9 pitches in the same amount of ab's. How how is it to work the count? Would you rather have those guys behind 0-2 in the count every AB? Red pitchers were throwing strikes. It's as simple as that.
  14. Glad to see Halton, my breakout candidate, on the roster as I expected. Jesus Sanchez will be interesting to follow. He's a converted catcher entering his 3rd year as a pitcher after posting 2 very good seasons in the Phillies organization. He could move up very quickly in the P50 if he puts up those numbers at Huntsville.
  15. Ishikawa is a guy they could look at bringing in to compete with Gamel next year. He's probably as good as Overbay and considerably cheaper (allowing them to spend in other areas) and he's less than 2 years older than Gamel.. He'd likely be a more productive hitter in Miller Park too but I don't see him with much value this year as a bench player behind Fielder. Gamel has to put up big AAA numbers (something he's yet to do) to go into 2012 as the front runner. If he doesn't, I'm sure they'll look at an Ishikawa among others.
  16. Seeing that Morris was assigned to Brevard, I have to believe this means Sean Halton will be at Huntsville, not Brevard. There's no way Halton should be behind Wilson who hit just .201/.270/.340 last year, nor do a I see a need for Halton to repeat a level.
  17. Great guy? Perhaps. But the perception in Milwaukee is that he hung on to collect a paycheck. Spending a spring training in Arizona as a NRI doesn't prove he stayed in for "the love of the game" in my book. Had he played in the era of year to year contracts, his career would likely have ended after the 2008 season.
  18. Melky Cabrera (yes that Melky Cabrera) won the job by hitting .468/.471/.742 this spring. Cain didn't do poorly himself, but it's understandable they'd go with a veteran off a spring like that. My guess is Royals will hope Cabrera plays well enough to have mid season trade value.
  19. I would completely discount how she was on the D-List. That is an awful show not because of her but because Olson in particular is an awful host who doesn't belong on radio. He's lazy. He lacks passion for what he is covering. It's almost if he takes pride in being cool and seeming not to care a whit. He doesn't bring out the best in the guys he has on. Why listen when the host doesn't care what he's talking about except when he's talking about food on Fridays? Making lists, the premise of the show is by itself a lazy radio trick.
  20. What are all you guys going to complain about when Yuni's hitting .280/.315/.410, the team is 20 games over .500, and 8 games up at the All Star break? That if they had a better SS, they'd be 10 games up?
  21. On days where Morgan is in the lineup I'd like to see Weeks moved down to an RBI spot. Something like this: Morgan Kotsay/Hart Braun Fielder McGehee Weeks Betancourt Kottaras/Lucroy I don't see it happening though. Roenicke is likely to just insert Morgan in the 2 spot, but it's just a thought.
  22. Orel Hershiser picked the Brewers in the Central on "Mike and Mike" this morning. Not everyone is reacting as if these minor injuries are huge deals.
  23. He had two good months last year, the only good stretch he's had since 2007. He was awful the 2nd half when he wasn't out due to a medical issue. He was terrible this spring allowing 27 runs (21 earned) and 32 hits in 17 innings. Why on earth would the Brewers have any interest?
  24. "OBP is much more valuable than SLG anyway" Not for the cleanup hitter. It's the threat of slugging that increases OBP. If he isn't the threat he was say in 2009, his OBP will start to suffer too.
