  1. I had forgot Dickerson has an option. He'll likely make the opening day roster if Hart starts on DL. Then when Hart returns, they'll option him. That solves your problem in case Gomez flops.
  2. Slowey isn't a guy you'd pick up to start a couple games and stick back in the pen and you are correct that the Twins are definitely looking for value in return. The Brewers are looking for a guy they can get off waivers who might be a better option than the guys they have and could be used in the bullpen later. I like Slowey, but only if a Brewer starter were to go down for an extended period.
  3. I'd argue your point about Dickerson having more pop in his bat. He's had slightly more pop than Reed in the majors. But Reed has a .467 career slugging percentage in the minors to Dickerson's .420. He may be a better defender, but Reed is adequate and Gomez won't come out of games for defense anyway.
  4. You're out of the loop. Hart's not going to be ready on opening day. There's just not enough time to get him enough AB's. As for my point that both Reed and Almonte have won jobs, look at the math. Reed has 57 ABs this spring to 34 for Dickerson. If Dickerson was going to make the team, he'd be getting a lot more AB's. You don't give that many AB's (Almonte has 58) to get guys ready for AAA. By the way Kottaras has won the backup catching job too.
  5. I believe it means just the opposite. Dickerson and Boggs are both going to be placed on waivers and Reed will be added to the roster. That creates an opening at AAA. Kotsay will be in the lineup on opening day. He is in no jeopardy whatsoever. I don't think that happens and I sure hope it doesn't happen. Get used to the idea, because that's what's happening. Reed's won a job. Kotsay had a job that was his to lose and he didn't lose it. Almonte's also won a job. The 25th man comes down to either Cruz, one of the two OF (Boggs or Dickerson) or carrying a 3rd catcher initially. There's also the issue whether Hart starts the year on the DL. In that case they'll keep either Boggs or Dickerson. Either way, they were going to be short a guy at AAA because of Reed not being there.
  6. I believe it means just the opposite. Dickerson and Boggs are both going to be placed on waivers and Reed will be added to the roster. That creates an opening at AAA. If Dickerson and/or Boggs clears and accepts an assignment, they'll just let Carroll (0 for 15, 6 K's this spring) go. Kotsay will be in the lineup on opening day. He is in no jeopardy whatsoever.
  7. A perfect guy would be Tim Redding. Unfortunately it's looking like the Dodgers need him and he won't be available. Dave Bush has an opt out clause if he doesn't make the Rangers opening day roster and that doesn't appear likely. He'd certainly fit if they want to go down that road again.
  8. Reed is 10 months older than Dickerson. Age between the two isn't an issue. Neither has great upside. I'll grant you Dickerson is faster, but he's not a huge SB threat. I've admitted Reed has never produced what his minor league numbers would project at the major league level but he makes better contact than Dickerson. Since both have shown just marginal power, give me the guy who makes contact.
  9. Let's not forget the Reds have Travis Wood too. He was very good (5-4, 3.51 ERA, 1.08 WHIP) in 17 starts after being called up last year. He's having an excellent spring and is a lock for that rotation.
  10. A case can easily be made that Jeremy Reed is a better player than Dickerson. Reed's a .315 career hitter in the minors, was once the 25th overall rated prospect, and doesn't strike out nearly as much as Dickerson. He's also had a 45 SB year in the minors. Dickerson is a lifetime .264 minor league hitter with lots of strikeouts. He's never been a top 100 prospect. The gap between Reed's minor league and major league numbers is greater, but someday maybe he'll take that forward step and hit like he has in the minors.
  11. I don't see a need for two backup middle infielders. Weeks plays every day. He's never double switched out of the lineup. Farris gives them adequate 2B protection at AAA and he's on the 40 man. Cruz would likely clear waivers, but even if he didn't, Maysonet is just as accomplished as Cruz. I have Cruz out. Reed is the wild card. He's having a great spring While I don't see him making the team unless Hart goes on the DL, he may be good enough that they'd let Dickerson go and keep both Boggs and Almonte, knowing that Boggs can play some CF, and that Reed is CF insurance. It's hard to ignore the spring Kottaras is having. He's pulled ahead of Nieves who has a weak bat. Even if they drop Nieves, they'll have experience at Nashville with Rivera.
  12. My bad, now MLBtraderumors says Mitre is a "release candidate" not that he's been released.
  13. Seems to me the choice is go with completely untested guy like Peralta, career minor leaguer like De la Cruz or Estrada, or take a chance on a veteran cut loose elsewhere to fill Greinke's spot. How many guys that will be cut loose put up a 3.33 ERA, and 1.093 WHIP last year in over 50 innings? Not only that, most veterans cut loose will happen at the end of spring. They'd have the bonus of having Mitre for a full 2 weeks. Mitre's good enough to stick around as a long man too.
  14. He's got 3 weeks to build innings. Lefties hit a modest .274/.311/.429 off him last year and he's being counted on to get them out in hold situations out of the pen.. He had 10 starts at AAA last year with a 3.16 ERA. He's certainly a better option than the guys they are looking at.
  15. Yankees are considering releasing Sergio Mitre. Mitre had pitched 5 innings this spring without allowing a run. Now he's no great shakes but for goodness sakes the Brewers are looking at Peralta (8 games above A ball), Marco Estrada, and Eugenio De la Cruz to fill in as a starter.
  16. Can't remember what it was, but Rivas has been on the shelf too. Seriously, they should be looking at Loe to fill in. They have a lot of relievers that have major league experience that can fill Loe's bullpen spot for a couple weeks. If it's just one start I suppose they could get by with Peralta (they did with Chris Saenz) but really if it's possible it could go on longer, they may need to look either at Loe or the waiver wire. Speaking of which, the Yankees just released Sergio Mitre. In 5 inning this spring he's allowed zero runs.
  17. Gomez is going to hit 2nd. Betancourt is likely to hit 7th. OBP will be far more critical for Gomez than it is for Betancourt. Betancourt's job will be to pick up some RBI (particularly of the 2 out variety batting behind Fielder, McGehee and Hart. He's shown he's capable of that. Gomez job will be to get on base in front of Braun, Fielder and McGehee. I think both are capable.
  18. Personally, I'd rather have Gomez than Cameron. Cameron is just about done. Gomez is a much much better fielder & base-runner at this point and I'd rather take a gamble on Gomez getting his hitting together than hope and wish that Cameron can staty healthy for a season... Cameron as a #4 OF is a good value (not taking into account salary, just in terms of a roster) and Boston values him there Exactly. I don't want to start a lengthy debate, but I've never understood the man love for Cameron on this board.I'm with you. He may have added some clubhouse presence on what was a young team at the time. As long as he was somewhat productive that's of some value. But he's been overpaid for quite some time based on numbers. He looks to be just about done and this team is full of veterans in their prime. They don't need a 3rd geezer. They already have one graybeard (who may be done too) in Counsell and a well traveled guy in Kotsay.
  19. This is an injury that he's obviously prone to. It's not a huge deal, especially when it happens in spring. My guess is that back in the day, guys who did this, got shots and played. That's why we never heard about these types of injuries back then.
  20. I still wouldn't rule out Farris. He's definitely a long shot, but he's getting a lot of AB's, he's doing well, he's getting time at SS, and Roenicke loves speed. Here's my list (includes non-roster with official major league invites) Pitchers: In: Gallardo, Marcum, Wolf, Narveson, Loe, Braddock, Saito, Axford In if healthy: Parra, Hawkins, Rogers Likely in: Green Bubble: McClendon, Kintzler, DiFelice, James Longshots: Egan, Merklinger No chance: Rivas, Scarpetta, Stetter, Peralta, Dillard, Mercedes, Dillard, Hinton, Segovia, DL: Greinke Position Players: In: Braun, Gomez, Hart, McGehee, Betancourt, Weeks, Fielder, Counsell, Kotsay In if healthy: Lucroy Likely in: Nieves, Dickerson Bubble: Kottaras, Boggs, Almonte, Cruz Longshots: Rivera, Farris, Gamel, Reed No chance: Maldanado, Gindl, Schafer, Maysonet, Wheeler, De La Rosa, Riggens Keep in mind that it's been mentioned that they may go with only 11 pitchers. I mentioned Merklinger with an outside shot because if Parra isn't ready they may want another lefty with options for long relief. Reed's got an outside shot at dislodging Dickerson. He's having a very good spring and he's getting a long look.
  21. Absolutely. This is one of those instances where there appears to be a competition but there really isn't. It's Nieves' job to lose. He hasn't lost it. He won't hit much but he is a switch hitter. He'll throw out 25% which isn't great but better than Kottaras. They are doing some showcasing of Kottaras and he might stick if Lucroy isn't back but I doubt it. If Lucroy isn't ready, they'll keep Rivera around for a couple weeks of the season because they believe they can get Mike through waivers and that he likes the Brewer organization and will accept assignment to Nashville.
  22. Assuming Dickerson makes the team (not a lock either), I think one roster spot will go to either Boggs, Almonte, Cruz or Farris (who is having a fine spring and seeing action at SS). Right now Almonte appears to be the favorite, but that could change. Boggs plus one of those 3 could make it too if Dickerson fails. Reed is a long shot that could still dislodge Dickerson also. All of these guys have plusses and minuses. Boggs big plus is that he's switch hitter. Dickerson is the best backup CF. Almonte has shown the best bat so far, but Arizona can be a fooler. Farris gives them speed off the bench and has options.
  23. endaround is right. Almonte's strictly a 1B/DH/PH. Almonte is battling Boggs though, not Katin who has no shot. Cruz is by no means a lock. Dadofeandrew is right about one thing. Cruz can't hit a lick. Anyone else notice that Farris has seen some time at SS? That's a sign to me that Cruz is in trouble. Maysonet could give them protection at SS in Nashville as well, so if they lost Cruz on waivers, it's not a great loss.
  24. Loe made 10 starts for Nashville last year. I would argue that made him better. I'll make a race horse analogy. Short relievers are like sprinters. Horse trainers will often "leg up" their sprinters by entering them in a longer race, then drop them back into shorter races. Especially with a sinker ball guy like Loe, the extra work early might make him more effective later. The Brewers have more major league ready bullpen arms than they do bullpen spots. McClendon has options. Stetter and James both have an option left. Maybe this opens a door for DiFelice to make the team. Egan can't be sent down but before being offered back, he might be useful. None of the currently healthy 40 man guys have any AAA experience. Most don't have a full season of AA either. My choice in that group would be Merklinger. But I'd prefer Loe. If Rogers can be ready in time, then fine, he's the guy.
  25. I think the angst in some quarters about the pen in misplaced and comes in part from national media types that paid little attention to Axford's outstanding 2010 or the emergence of Loe in a setup role. Now these same media types are looking closer at the Brewers and because they had written them off last year in May, they express doubts.. While you can never feel 100% certain, I like the mix out there and that's without Hawkins. Anything he gives you is a bonus.
