  1. Brenly is available too last time I checked thumperdan though you may prefer Barker. I'm not sure I'm on board with Cora. Yeah he came up with the Padres, and coached under Guillen who is said to favor the "NL style", but Cora's an AL guy who's had almost no exposure to the Brewer roster. Of the "named guys", my choice would be Melvin. The only reason a guy wouldn't want his name to be known is that if he doesn't get it, he doesn't want it known he was turned down. That's why I think it's Brenly. I think he really wants to manage again but doesn't want to be seen as a guy who keeps getting passed over and he was passed over the last time for the Brewer opening. Only other guys I can think of that wouldn't want it known if they don't get the job are Torre and Girardi, and what are the odds the Brewers would be dealing in those price ranges.
  2. You are referring to a gentleman with the initials B.B. I presume.? It makes a lot of sense that he'd be a mystery candidate. He could have been a finalist all along. The denials were probably just to make sure they'd have other viable guys to interview.
  3. No, but that's not to say the guys they currently have couldn't be better and that a young guy couldn't adequately fill a rotation spot.. Gallardo actually regressed slightly. Wolf ended up around his career norm and he's had better years than that. Narveson was 28 but he was essentially a rookie. Will a full year under his belt, it's conceivable he'll post better overall numbers too. KC is going to want a pitcher back who's more advanced than the top Brewer guys. They may take a lower level guy if they get say a comparable advanced everyday player. That's why I think the Brewers would have to include Cain to get a Grienke.
  4. Don't kid yourself. The Cubs aren't in a long term rebuilding mode. First, Hendry isn't on solid ice and he's got to win. Second, Quade got the job in hopes that the momentum from the last 6 weeks carries over until next year. If they were truly interested in rebuilding, they'd have gone with Sandberg. They think they can contend next year. They can too but only if Zambrano pitches like he did at the end of the year. With the Cubs and their revenue, they can never be written off easily. Dropping out of the race so early last year, allowed them the luxury of turning to some younger players. In Chicago, they don't have that luxury starting off a season.
  5. Glad to have Rivera back in the organization. Seems curious that shortly after Macha departs, they bring Rivera back ostensibly for AAA depth. Makes you wonder if the only guy in the organization that didn't like Mike was Macha.
  6. Judging from the quantity of names being interviewed, I have to question whether Melvin has a clue of what exactly he wants. Macha's fate was sealed pretty much by the 8th of July after they were steamrolled at home by the Giants to fall 11.5 back. You would think that over 3+ months he would have been able to narrow the field down a little more than he has.
  7. There's "message board" fans, then there's everyone else. They don't always look at things the same way.
  8. Cubs officially hire Quade. While many Cub fans will applaud them for not taking the sentimental choice in Sandberg, the choice is not going to sit well with many Cub faithful. Many feel Sandberg did what he was asked, paid his dues in the minors and this is a betrayal of a beloved Cub figure. Should be fun watching the squirming if Quade doesn't deliver.
  9. I'm pretty sure Sandoval doesn't get quite the same pitches to hit that Fontenot does. Fontenot's not known for a great glove either. Nice bench guy/stopgap over a guy who was 7th in the MVP voting last year? Bad year or not, seems a curious decision. That's why I'm thinking Giants must have really soured on Sandoval and that for the right price, maybe he is available.
  10. Gindl with a HR to drive in Farris who had singled on the 15th pitch of an AB leading off the 5th inning. Farris is 2 for 3 so far with 2 runs scored. Gindl is 1 for 2 with a HBP. I'd say the Brewer representatives are acquitting themselves quite well so far.
  11. I look at Gamel and see Adam LaRoche, another notorious lefthanded hitting streak hitter with a similar stroke. I would suspect he'd put up numbers similar to what LaRoche does over the course of a full season.
  12. This guy is sitting on the Giant bench while they play Mike Fontenot? I know Sandoval had a big dropoff from last year and is a defensive liability but Mike Fontenot, are you kidding me? Was he a one year wonder who is in the process of eating himself out of the game, or the buy low candidate of the century to replace Fielder?
  13. I'm glad for two reasons. First, the Brewers should stay away from another AL manager. Macha's game management never stooped to the idiocy of Yost, but his disdain for using the speed he had didn't fit in the NL. Second, the year Wedge had success, he had great starting pitching and a healthy lineup. He never came close to respectable with less.
  14. Per baseball-reference, Lilly's number 1 comparable is Randy Wolf. Randy Wolf's number one comparable is Ted Lilly. The Brewers already have Ted Lilly. His name is Randy Wolf.
  15. Narveson posted some solid numbers (1.378 WHIP, 7.4 K/9IP, a .266 BAA, 12 wins). Not sure why you're lumping him in with Parra. Parra as a starter was 2-7, with a 6.19 ERA and a 1.74 WHIP. Narveson was 11-9 with a 4.85 ERA, and a 1.31 WHIP as a starter. That 1.31 WHIP as a starter was best on the team.
  16. He still has some command issues to work on. You don't want to be straining your bullpen in April in May covering 4 innings every time he starts or having "bullpen days" while Rogers skips starts. That will toast their pen by Flag Day. Presumably they will add at least one starter via trade to fit in with Gallardo, Wolf, and Narveson. Wolf (3.71) and Narveson (3.89) were both effective starters over the 2nd half. Along with Gallardo and likely one top half of rotation starter to be had in a deal, that will be 4/5 of their April rotation. The 5th guy will be keeping Rogers spot warm. Ideally, I think that should be Loe myself. If you assume Hawkins returns in decent form, along with the likes of McClendon, Villanueva, Braddock, and Parra, they should have the bullpen covered to get to Axford. Loe, a starter most of his professional career, showed he can smoothly transition from starter to short reliever. Instead of starting out at Nashville as he did last year, start him in Milwaukee. By mid-season when Rogers shows he's ready, the bullpen will probably need bolstering so just move Loe back out there and insert a fresh Rogers capable of making regular starts.
  17. I usually don't watch much postseason baseball but last night I caught several innings. What struck me watching Cliff Lee closely was that his delivery is not all that different from Chris Narveson. When Narveson's right, he's got a good curveball and changeup and that enables him to freeze hitters with his 89-90 mph fastball, much like Lee's freezing guys with his 92-93 heater. No question Lee benefits from the extra 2-3 mph and he's shown he can consistently command his other very high quality stuff over the long haul, but I think there's hope that Narveson could become a poor mans Cliff Lee and do a lot better job than typical #5 starters.
  18. I read somewhere recently that Matt Murton broke Ichiro's record for hits in a season over there this year. Now Murton is certainly a quality professional hitter. I was advocating picking him up to be the right handed bench bat for the Brewers last offseason. But the fact that a journeyman like Murton would be setting offensive records is an indication that the pitching there is lacking.
  19. Grades like this are opinions. Getting too worked up about someone else's opinion makes little sense. These guys watched this team all year game after game, and they not only had stats to use as a guide but what they saw also. I'd make a few minor changes, but overall I think the grades are pretty fair. In my opinion, Axford deserved the highest grade. Many argued with my choice of him as Brewer MVP, and there's an argument to be made that as a reliever that impacted 2-3 games a week tops isn't as valuable as an everyday player, but nobody on the 2010 Brewers did his job as consistently as Axford.
  20. I think that's a fair statement by Macha. Other than strikeouts, what numbers has Gallardo put up that reflect those of a true #1 guy? He's never topped 185 innings. His command comes and goes and he often runs up his pitch counts that limits his innings. He's still a bit of a work in progress and lacks the consistency of top of the line starters on winning teams. I
  21. Corey Patterson started 36 of Juan Samuel's 51 managerial games. He hit leadoff most of those games. Granted, Patterson wasn't bad this year as a 4th/5th OF'er type, but I don't ever want another manager who thinks Corey Patterson is some kind of answer. You don't mention that A. Brian Roberts was on the DL the entire time Patterson was leading off and Samuel had really no other alternative and B. It was easily the best stretch of games in Patterson's career, at least since 2003 anyway. Of course thats not saying much.
  22. Samuel's winning percentage of .333 was better than Dave Trembley's .277, and the O's did sweep 4 from the Rangers during his tenure. As to my point about Escobar and Gomez, it's that you look at areas where the Brewers can improve over 2010. One is SS, and it's likely that is going to have to be Escobar stepping up. I for one don't think Macha was the type that was going to get the best out of Escobar and that's one reason he's gone. Cain could well be source of improvement in CF but jury is out there too over a full season.
  23. I disagree totally. Webb at his peak, which wasn't all that long ago, was better than either Vazquez and Sheets. Vazquez HR ratio is comparable to Dave Bush and that's not a good thing. Plus he's 3 years older than Webb. It's no coincidence Vazquez had his best year in the last 3 pitching in spacious Turner Field. I will admit Webb is high risk. But he's also high reward, very high reward. In recent years the Brewers have been throwing millions at guys in their 30's who at best are 4th starters. Even if Davis hadn't gotten hurt this season, he wouldn't have made one whit of a difference as he was easily replaced by minimum wage Narveson. Losing him was essentially no loss at all. That's just plain stupid use of money as was the money given to Braden Looper the year before. This year with lots of money off the books the Brewers are in the best position in recent memory to take a gamble that if it paid off would be enormous. All they have to do is use the money they are saving by having pre-arby Narveson as 5th starter instead of paying to get over the hill guys like Looper and Davis who never were a shadow of what Webb has been. If Webb fails completely, then go to plan B, the young guys. To Al's point, Yankees don't need to gamble.
  24. A hot postseason by Lance Berkman could hurt the market for Fielder.
  25. Samuel managed Birmingham, the Mets AA team, to a 70-70 record in 2006. Carlos Gomez was on that team and it was undoubtedly his best season as a pro. Unlocking the untapped ability in Gomez and Escobar who have the most room for improvement is not a bad idea and having a Latin manager just might be the ticket. One things for sure, if his playing days are any indication, Samuel will take a lot more chances on the bases.
