  1. I think Hall should get his OF glove out of mothballs too and take some fungos just in case too.
  2. Hall is not likely to be traded. He's owed $15.7 million minimum over 2 years. He's going to figure on this team somewhere so we better hope that he rebounds enough to be at least half of a platoon somewhere. If not, he's expensive insurance for anywhere in the IF and OF. Personally I think he can rebound at least to a .250 hitter with some HR power. Hall needs a mental break more than anything and if he comes into next season in the right frame of mind who knows? As miserable as this season has been for him, he's had some moments. So with whom and where do you platoon him? Do you let Branyan and Lamb compete in spring to be the stopgap until Gamel? Bring in someone else? Move Hall back to CF and move Hardy to 3B with Escobar at SS? Who knows what the deal is with Weeks. I think he has one more season to prove himself or he'll be traded for what little value he might have left, or frankly become a non-tender candidate. This figures to be one interesting offseason.
  3. This team's offensive approach right now might be the worst I've ever seen. Good example today after walking Durham to load the bases with one out, Hardy who's already grounded out twice (one a DP), goes after a sinker down and in on the first pitch. This team's offensive IQ is in single digits.
  4. You argued last offseason when I was talking up trading for Ibanez that he wasn't that good and yet he's put up numbers this year that with a good team would put him in the AL MVP discussion.
  5. Philly and Houston have really easy schedules. If the Brewers don't at least split in Philly, it's all over. One if not both will fly by the Brewers.
  6. Cameron has value as a player but he's not worth $10 million at age 36 even for just one season, especially for a team that is overly righthanded and strikes out a lot. Spend that money elsewhere. Move Hart to CF if you have to and find a LH bat that can hit close to .300 and not strike out 150 times. He's striking out at a rate close to what Jose Hernandez did in 2002, and I don't think anyone here thought Jose was worth $10 million.
  7. Done. Well worth it.
  8. Fielder isn't going to be sold low. I'd argue his off year is largely the result of his being lone lefthanded threat in lineup for most of season. It's no accident that Fielder's best stretch in May and June coincided with Branyan's hot month. You need to add a lefthanded bat to augment Fielder's in the lineup not deal your only legit lefthanded power bat.
  9. Forget Edmonds. His resurgence is a complete mirage. His HR's are almost all "wall scrapers", many of which are to left center in Wrigley which is the shortest alley in all of baseball (it actually measures shorter than it's listed distance). He also doesn't cover any where near the ground he used to. He still has value to the Cubs because his stroke is perfect for Wrigley but anywhere else, he's pretty much done. I know Ibanez is an A, but his is the type of bat this team really could use. Garland as a B is certainly intriguing to me.

  12. I couldn't agree more. It's why I started this thread. All the fingers get pointed at the pen and they deserve a lot of blame, but when your cleanup hitter does nothing for over a month, no team can survive that.
  13. It was not too long ago the speculation was the Fielder would break the bank in arbitration this offseason and get something similar to the $10 million Howard got. I have to believe Fielders' woeful performance of late has cost him at least $3 million so far and that he can't expect more than $7 million next season and that could even go lower if he keeps up this awful pace.
  14. Before I get to my 2009 lineup, let me point out that Paul Molitor was dubbed "The Ignitor" as a rookie in 1978 despite the fact he posted a leadoff OBP of just .301 that season. That was because from day one Molitor played with an attitude that carried over to the entire team that I've yet to see from Weeks. From the little I've seen of Escobar, he's got that flair that is contagious much like Molitor and despite the fact that he hasn't walked a lot in the minors, I think he should be batting leadoff and playing SS for the Brewers in 09. So my lineup would look something like: SS Escobar 2B Weeks LF Braun 1B Fielder CF Hart RF Ibanez 3B Hall/Gamel or Lamb platoon C Kendall I think it's critical to balance the lineup and as good as Cameron's been, I'd rather move Hart and add a lefty bat like Ibanez as a FA. I'm on record as favoring a Hardy for Cain deal. Bench: I'd bring back Kapler and Rivera, add a middle infielder and another corner OF. Pitching has too many variables to project.
  15. fondybrewfan, Haven't been to Gilles in Fondy in about 35 years. Was hangout place for my generation as teenagers in Fondy. Back then was start off place for cruising Main street. The A&W is also at the same location in Fondy it was some 50 years ago. Still remember as small kid in back of parents car drinking root beer in frosted mugs with the Braves on the radio. Both those places deserve respect for their history if nothing else. Don't dine much in Wisconsin, but we do try to get to Bluemond Gardens (Wauwautosa?) after a Brewer game once a year. We don't find that kind of value in Illinois. For ribs fans, if you are ever in NW suburbs of Chicago, I recommend Sweet Baby Rays on Higgins in Elk Grove Village (they have another location in Wood Dale). It's about a mile or two east of Woodfield Mall.
  16. This current team is starting to remind me of the 1983 team and that's not a good thing. In 83 they were in good position to repeat as AL East champs then just completely stopped hitting for about a 10 game stretch in early to mid September to fall completely out of it. It was if they lost all their offensive energy.
  17. I'll watch the Packers and flip to Brewers during the many timeouts and at halftime. The NFL season is an all out sprint compared to baseball. It will be interesting to see what the crowd is at Miller Park.
  18. I didn't realize it but the Brewers can keep him through next year at the minimum with the Twins liable for his contract. As he's only 1 year removed from back to back .800+ OPS seasons with Houston, I think this could be a good pickup. It accomplishes several things besides adding a much needed lefty bat. It basically eliminates a need to pickup Counsell's option. Now Counsell might still make a decent backup in the middle infield, but he's not worth $3 million. It also allows Gamel up to a year at AAA which after he struggled in the 2nd half, he might need both offensively and defensively. Early in his career, Lamb, fittingly enough, was a butcher in the field but he progressed to adequate. If he returns to his 06-07 offensive form, he's a nice addition. As for Palmisano, he got passed up by half the catchers in the organization in one season: Salome, LuCroy, Fryer, and I'd even throw in Corporan who had a decent season too.
  19. Hall's defense the last 2 months has been stellar and he's got the same number of RBI (8) since August 15th as Fielder so I'd say look across the diamond to find the real problem right now.
  20. I don't think it's a 3rd base problem so much as with Fielder not hitting, they are getting nothing from the left side of the plate. I think they've needed to take some pressure off of Fielder for some time. Stairs would have been a better option offensively but Lamb is a guy at least capable of a hot streak and who knows the NL. That he plays 3B is a plus.
  21. I'm worried a lot more about the 09 Astros than this year's team. If they catch the Brewers this year it will take a lot of help from the Brewers.
  22. I think it's pretty safe to say that no pitcher really had a year that stood out dramatically.
  23. Not the time to panic after two close losses to the Mets. They were inches away from hits that would have blown open last night's game. They need to stay on an even keel win or lose. My biggest concern is Fielder right now, but deep down I figure he's going to break out of it, and when he does it's all over.
  24. This is why I'd fire this guy. He robbed the 21,000 mostly Pirate diehards that showed up of what would have been the only drama of the entire game. Whether as a Pirate fan you'd be rooting hard for your team to break up a no hitter in the late innings or wanted to witness a rare feat even if it was against, aren't you as an employee of MLB the least bit sensitive to the entertainment value for fans who pay your salary as well? Doesn't it occur to you that by the 5th inning, many fans have picked up when one team or another has not gotten a hit yet? And doesn't a pitcher who hasn't allowed a hit yet deserve a second or third look at the very least before you post your decision on a play that is clearly at best questionable? At least if you've taken some time, there's proof that you looked closely at the play and for that couple of minutes at least there is drama for the fans. My own gut feeling is this guy is a Pirate diehard himself and he let that influence his hasty decision. He wanted to see the no hitter broken up. He figured by ruling quickly it would appear to give more certainty to the call.
  25. Only question that really matters is wiill it be enough to sign CC? Harley-Davidson could have half of Miller Park if it kept that guy in town. Better yet, how about CC wearing Harley logo on mound in exchange for Harley picking up his contract?
