  1. sbrylski06 is right. Break in Villanueva in 07. Sign a guy like Padilla or Meche for 3 years and you bascally lock up 4/5 ths of the rotation for at least 2 more years. Now if you would trade a Capuano for a big bat, then by all means those guys are options. There's too much promise in the high minors otherwise and by the time that contract runs, Sheets will need a new contract and Bush and Capuano will be getting expensive. They probably will bring in a veteran or two for some depth preferably one that could pitch long out of the pen or start. But more like a Helling type who is looking to resurrect something or an old guy who would take a one year deal (Maddux?).
  2. This whole focus on height by BA is ridiculous. Oswalt and Pedro are both under 6' and easily among the top 5 pitchers in the game the last 5 years. In the past, there was Tom Seaver (6'1") and Catfish Hunter who was 6'0". Both were first ballot Hall of Famers. Sure I can't think of too many 5'8" great pitchers, but even if he's fudging a little I doubt Inman is shorter than Oswalt or Pedro. By the way, check out Inman's photo on his player profile page. Notice the thick neck. The guy is well put together.
  3. Jenkins has his slugging percentage back over .400 for the first time since July 28th. Not coincidentally in my opinion, that was the day of the Lee trade. I think he's back swinging the bat better because he's finally taken the pressure off of himself. I've always been convinced that Jenkins' troubles are self induced. It's just the way he's wired.
  4. "TGJ ouch" Why am I not surprised endaround would chime in there the first time Tony Jr. has on 0 fer?
  5. I'm actually hoping Nashville gets eliminated so Gwynn and Villanueva can get to Milwaukee. Gwynn could have been useful last night.
  6. "He (Villanueva) was serviceable in the jump from AA and has absolutely dominated since going down to AAA. Then again, so have all of our pitchers who got crushed in the bigs.." Well Team Canada, I am sure you are referring to lil Ben. But I submit that Villanueva has been more dominant at AAA than Ben was when he peaked at 23 in 04 and Carlos is just 22. With his 7 innings last night, his AAA WHIP is now under 1. Ben's in 04 was 1.12. Not a huge difference but when it's that low, even a small difference is significant. And I would say he was better than serviceable in his short major league stint with a very tidy 1.21 WHIP. All you have to do is look at the Marlins to conclude that sooner or later one of these young pitchers in the Brewer system is going to have success at the major league level. I think Villanueva will be the first.
  7. Nashville wins 4-0 behind yet another outstanding performance by Carlos Villanueva, 7 IP, 2 Hits, 2 BB, 6 K. Villanueva has to be strongly considered for a rotation spot in Milwaukee in 2007. He's handcuffed a pretty strong Round Rock lineup in his last two starts. By the way take note endaround, Gwynn contributed a two run home run.
  8. Rottino not in starting lineup. Instead Yost has a guy who has a month left with the organization in there. And Haudricourt wonders why fans want Yost fired. By the way Rottino has played in Miller Park before. He played in exhibition vs. the White Sox prior to 05 season and if memory serves, laced a double in that game.
  9. Gents, we just got swept by a team with a payroll of $14 million.
  10. Davis showed again tonight why he shouldn't be considered for a long term contract.
  11. Bizzaro world continues as Gross gets a hit off a lefty.
  12. Another RBI for Babe Ohka. Take that Mr. Fogg!
  13. Careful Jenkins bashers, that's two games in a row with 7 or more runs and Geoff in the lineup. Maybe he was right when he said the team is better with him in the lineup.
  14. Nice shot there Peavy, but notice Hall was leading off both times up today. Let's see what they throw him with runners on. Not that I'm complaining, Hall getting extra base hits leads to runs whenever he gets them. Opposing pitchers would be smarter to walk him more.
  15. "Zach Jackson has better pure stuff than Capuano"? Is that the same Zach Jackson I watched throwing 86-88 mph fastballs with no offspeed command earlier this year in Milwaukee? There's probably 2 dozen minor leaguers in Brewer system who could be said to have "better stuff" than Capuano but I wouldn't put Jackson at the top of that list. Command of pitches is what makes a guy a major league pitcher not "stuff". To rank Jackson ahead of Villanueva is a complete puzzle to me. And once again what does Tony Gwynn have to do to get more respect?
  16. "Gwynn...He's just a power liability". You could have said the same thing about his dad who will go into the Hall of Fame next year. Every player in the lineup doesn't have to have power to be an offensive plus on the team. Gwynn is a leadoff hitter with speed who can play CF, usually not considered any better than the 5th most power position (behind LF, RF, 1B, 3B). Besides he has slugged higher this season than he did at a lower level last year.
  17. Gwynn deserves to be in top 10. Yeah it was a microscopic sample but he sure looked like a guy who knew what to do with a bat when he was up. I also agree with LouisEly that Villanueava has to be above Jackson. He has outperformed him at every level this year and Jackson's "stuff" isn't any more impressive.
  18. "Clark is the most likely to be sent off since he has a reasonable salary for his talent" Gee, being able to keep your elbow hanging in there to get nicked is sure worth a lot more these days. Does Clark have another discernable talent I am not aware of? One little thing all you that are projecting salaries need to keep in mind: Just because a guy is pre-arby, don't assume he will get major league minimum. Weeks made $500,000 this year. Hall made $420,000, Capuano $450,000, and all were pre arby. One way Brewers try to curry favor with players and their agents is to reward young players with increases over and above minimum for good solid performances. So don't try to project Fielder at say $340,000. He's much more likely to be in the $500,000 range.
  19. Wake me up when they win a series on the road. Is that my alarm? Key to winning series on road: Play last place team that no longer has Casey or Craig Wilson and doesn't have Bay or Jack Wilson in the lineup. Still, I'll take it.
  20. How many more do we need to trust Turnbow?
  21. Yost is a Turnbow addict. He announces one day, that Turnbow "will not close games for now". Kolb gets one opportunity and saves a game. What happens? Yost goes right back to Turnbow even after they acquire Cordero. After Cordero bails Turnbow out of a sure blown game vs. the Reds, Yost finally makes a change. Ah but he finds a way to get him in position to lose another.
  22. "With a 4 run lead it was a decent time to get him in the saddle" Are you kidding? Have you watched this team all year? Less than two weeks ago, they nearly let a 4 run lead go vs. the Reds in one inning. I wouldn't have used Capellan with anything less than a 6 run lead or behind in a game.
  23. Great example on why Capellan should have spent the month pitching in Nashville. With Helling, Kolb, and Wise all throwing well lately, he wasn't needed. Now Ned brings him into a game that wasn't quite put away, and now Cubs are right back in it.
  24. Forget the wild card, what makes this series big is that the Cubs are only 5 games back of the Brewers. Lose 2 of 3 and they get within 4. Get swept and they are right on the heels of the Brewers only 2 back. As discouraging as this year has been imagine finishing behind the Cubs who have struggled most of the year and will spend plenty in the offseason to get better.
  25. I would guess the fact that Parra was promoted to AA the day prior to the deadline is a sure sign that he is going to the AFL. I'd guess Braun too. The other 4 are guesses: Rottino Ozzie Chavez Hammond Crew
