  1. "Dominate AAA, just like the first time" That's funny, but in looking at his 05 and 06 AAA stats, somehow the word dominate isn't the first thing that comes to mind. Even this year, 10 BB in 23 innings at AAA, says to me "command problems continue".
  2. Hendrickson is the same guy who was horrible two years ago. What did he do since, to make anyone think we wouldn't see more of the same?
  3. TheCrew07: "I'm really starting to feel bad for Hart...maybe he should learn how to catch". Don't worry Crew, Hart will get his chance but what about Mike Rivera? He IS catching, has a 16 game hitting streak, a .426 Batting average, and a 1.209 OPS, and raked the second half of 2005 and all spring training and the Brewers can't find a spot for him? How many catchers in organized baseball are doing that? FREE MIKE RIVERA!
  4. If this team is serious about contending it cannot afford to carry De La Rosa on the pitching staff. Potential goes only so far.
  5. Someone asked at the beginning of this thread if this was a "must win" type game. It's probably not, but it is an important game and Yost is managing it like its spring training.
  6. Two weeks into the season and Yost can't get away from his security blanket that is Wise. Lehr is fresh, Kolb is in witness protection, Wise inexplicably pitched 2 innings with a huge lead on Saturday. Ned, Wise cannot be used like that. He is not a workhorse type. For those struggling to remember Wise like this, well late July last year vs. the Giants on a Friday night at Miller Park, he coughed up a 3 run lead in the 8th.
  7. Purdue update: Purdue garnered a split with Indiana over the weekend by pasting the Hoosiers 25-8 Sunday. Neal Gorka, who I profiled earlier in this thread, broke out of a 6 for 40 slump vs. Indiana by posting this amazing line for the 4 games agains the Hoosiers: 15 AB 5 Runs 9 Hits 14 RBI He had 3 HR (2 GS, and a 3 Run Shot), and 2 Doubles. Mitch Hillegoss, Purdue's outstanding SS, had back to back 4 hit games in the series and is now batting .414 with a OBP of .497 and slugging percentage of .636.
  8. Good thing Carlos is so strong. Carrying around 24 guys on your shoulders is not all that easy.
  9. That inning had it both, bad managing and bad execution. Now instead of Turnbow, he's turning the game over to Kolb. La Russa is managing rings around Yost today.
  10. That's the old Brady, going after the first pitch strike and doing something with it. Did I hear Jim Powell on the pregame say the Cardinals never make a mistake? I count at least 4 already in this game.
  11. I like this lineup. Weeks can use a day to regroup. Got to get Hall in there somehow too.
  12. Well, I am watching this one down here in Illinois and those not able to see consider yourself fortunate. Bush has no curveball whatsover tonight. He looks nothing like the guy we saw in his first start. He's thrown a couple of changeups (or hangers) but mostly fastballs that he's trying to move around but leaving some in the middle of the plate.
  13. OH MAN! His line: 0 IP 4 H 5 R 5 ER 1 BB. Now Jacque Jones has left the game for an unknown reason. Seriously though, the Reds can mash and the wind is blowing out.
  14. Through 5 innings, he's at 69 pitches. That will probably be it I would guess. 8 K's, 0 BB, 2 harmless singles. Should be ready to go 85-90 on Sunday vs. the Mets assuming he feels no ill effects from today. He's back out for the 6th! Bullpen is going.
  15. "The crew seems to like Fernandez" After seeing the portly Fernandez toss his knuckler up in the zone for two innings Sunday and see it get pounded, I'm not so sure he's all that well liked at least by this Brewer fan. Capellan may need to go down at some point but I think Fernandez could easily clear waivers and get sent down. I do think it was a mistake using Capellan down just 2 runs to the team to beat in the division after Helling had mowed em down for two innings. What's wrong with Helling going 3 and keeping his arm stretched out. I think at some point Helling may be needed in the rotation.
  16. "I don't believe in playing him just to play him". Many if not most managers try to get starts for every non pitcher sometime in the first week of the season for the very reason "just to play him" so they keep their reserves from doing just what Hart is doing now, anxiously sitting wondering when he's going to get an AB. What indication has Yost given that he'll see any more action the next 15 games than he has now?
  17. "I just don't think he's one of our top guys now...I feel Ned would be cheating the team...) Nonsense. Hart's a major leaguer. He should be able to do the job just as the others. Weren't the Brewers just beat by subs Damien Easley and Tony Clark yesterday? I can see not playing him vs. Cards, because of rust, but he should have been in there at least one game in the Arizona series so that wouldn't have been such an issue. It's one thing to ask a veteran to be in witness protection or a rookie journeyman minor leaguer (like a Trent Durrington), but for a genuine prospect like Hart to sit like this is ridiculous.
  18. I was at this one. Capuano was left in two batters too long, not one. I'm sure the thought process was keep Clark hitting from his weaker right side but folks, it was obvious that Capuano was laboring big time before Clark stepped up. He basically lost control of his out pitch, the changeup. Besides, De La Rosa was up and ready in the pen if they wanted to keep a lefty in there. Capuano's pitch count wasn't all that high, but a manager has to sometimes ignore pitch count and base a judgement on his eyes. I didn't need to see the pitch count to know that Capuano was done. I wouldn't give the Brewer offense a pass. Sure they hit a few well that were outs, but no more than a normal game. For the most part, they could not get on top of Vargas' heat resulting in a lot of easy fly ball outs.
  19. "Hart for Jenkins would be nice, but it ain't going to happen". Nor should it. Jenkins was really seeing the ball well last night and putting good wood on it. Now is not the time to rest him. Hart needs a start, but you don't take the hot hand out of there. You give the struggling guy the night off and right now that's Fielder. If Fielder is so fragile that an off day is going to cause him to lose confidence, then he's not ready for the big leagues. When Prince gets it rolling (and he will), then look elsewhere to get Hart a few starts.
  20. This game can also be heard on the White Sox flagship, WSCR, 670 AM.
  21. Here's my fascination with Rivera. He was just 24 years old when he hit 33 HR and drove in 103 runs in one season and an OPS over .900 in the pitching dominant Eastern League. Now Palmisano won't turn 24 until September, but imagine how he would be perceived if he hit 33 home runs and posted a .936 OPS at Huntsville this year. People would be clamoring for him to take the starting job. Well off that season, Rivera got the backup job at Detroit the following year and didn't do all that well but not terrible if you consider he was a rookie in a tough role in a tough hitters park. He was behind a top prospect there in Brandon Inge. In 2003, he barely played at all (don't know if it was due to injuries) but he never got going at AAA or in the majors. Then again in 04, he struggled never finding that form he showed in 01. So he became your proverbial AAA journeyman. But last year, he just plain started mashing again like he did when he was 24. 16 home runs in 214 at bats, an OPS of .895. When all the prospects came up to the Brewers, he was the best offensive weapon Nashville still had. His major league throwing stats are better than average throwing out 35% of base stealers and even that is more impressive if you add in that he caught Steve Sparks in Detroit.
  22. The only way I see Gross in trouble is if Hall so clearly outplays Koskie that he forces Ned to play him virtually every day at third relegating Koskie to left handed pinch hit role.
  23. Striking out with a guy at first doesn't mean there is no chance of a double play. It's just becomes a strike em out, throw em out variety. Now a grounder to second with the runner moving generally gets the runner over and if the 2nd baseman goes to cover, that grounder turns into a hit and a first and third situation. Unless a guy steals two bases in one at bat, there is no way a strikeout moves over a runner save for a wild pitch. Furthermore having strikeout prone hitters puts a big damper on the running game. Generally that is not a good thing unless of course the runner is Brady Clark whom you want staying put anyway.
  24. Simpson fanned 89 in something like 63 AAA innings last year. He also had not allowed a run in 5 appearences this spring with the Reds. Seems to be a pickup in the Kolb/Turnbow mold, a hard thrower off the scrap heap. Maddux has worked wonders before.
