  1. The Brewers offensive problems stem from lack of productivity in the 2 and 3 spots in the batting order. They are 21st in OPS in the second spot (.692) and a woeful 24th in OPS in the 3rd spot (.754). In fact the Brewers 7th spot has produced at a much better rate (.820) than the 3rd spot, normally the place where the best hitter on the team hits. Of course producing in the 7th spot does't lead to as many runs with the 8th and 9th hitters following. Jenkins batted third through most of his bad start. Overbay has been there since early June. Yost stubborness in leaving Overbay in a prime spot while he has gone almost 6 weeks with 3 total extra base hits has hurt as much as anything.
  2. I'll vote no. I kind of go with a 5/5/5 rule meaning a guy must have 5 clearly Hall of Fame seasons, 5 that are very close, and 5 more as solid everyday player. He got the first 5 from 83 through 87. But his next 5 best seasons are really noticeably not as strong as his best 5 and his third 5 include a lot of partial seasons due to injuries. I might have overlooked his offensive shortcomings if he had played CF. But he played LF, a bigger offensive position.
  3. It will be Braves vs. Braves as Brewers don Milwaukee Braves unis tonight. I was recalling the old Braves days recently. I have come to the conclusion that the Braves might have never left Milwaukee if it were not for a really, really bad trade made after the 1960 season. After a very respectible 88-66 2nd place finish in 1960, management panicked and traded not one but two of the better young pitchers in all of baseball (Joey Jay and Juan Pizarro) to the Reds for SS Roy McMillan, a 31 year old shortstop who had hit .236 the year before. Jay went on to help the Reds win the pennant in 61 by winning 21 games. Pizarro ended up with the White Sox where he won 61 games over the next 4 seasons. McMillan hit .220 in 1961, and his arrival prompted the trade of the very popular Johnny Logan. Now Logan was near the end but he was just 2 years older than McMillan. Had they kept Jay and Pizarro to go with Spahn, Burdette and Buhl, the Braves would have won another pennant in 1961 and fan interest would have been re-kindled. Instead fan support waned, the club was sold and then moved. Many, many old Braves fans will recall that it was trades like this that cost them fans and ultimately the team. Just a little history lesson for you young fans to ponder.
  4. I'll give him a thumbs up. Rydogg points out he drove in 100 or more only 3 times (actually he did it 4 times) and that he only hit 30 HR 3 times. He would have had another but a third of the 81 season was wiped out by a strike. Montreal wasn't exactly a huge HR park either. His batting numbers aren't quite enough but when you add the SB and his fielding (he led the league in assists twice), i think he qualifies as a H of F'er. Rice on the other hand was a feared hitter who benefitted playing for Boston club full of boppers. My problem with him is that he just didn't sustain it long enough. He never hit more than 20 home runs in a season after turning 33 and unlike Dawson, it was power that was Rice's only asset.
  5. "At least we seem to be hitting Valdez well" The Brewers always seem to hit Valdez well. The problem has always been scoring off him. 5 hits and just 1 run in two innings has me concerned.
  6. "How can Wes be so good at AAA, and so bad for the Brewers"? The answer is simple but first the question is flawed and therein lies the explanation. Wes has had his moments as a Brewer. So he wasn't always bad. But his position whether as a starter or reliever was always a tenuous one so his work was irregular. One bad outing and he put added pressure on himself, and he would end up making things worse. Wes' stuff is good enough to dominate AAA hitters and be at least serviceable at the major league level. But his career started late, got interrupted by injury, and he was in the major leagues before he had enough experience to be comfortable pitching through adversity. Putting a guy like that in role of spot starter was not a wise move. His getting regular turns at AAA now is the best thing that could happen. He'll resurface in the majors at some point and be a pretty good pitcher. Whether its with the Brewers or not is a question.
  7. May I suggest to my fellow 50 somethings out there that it might be a good idea to have medical staff nearby while following this team. Brewers now within 1/2 game of Cubs and Mets. Hope Sheets can go 9 tomorrow. Where are the Jenkins bashers??
  8. Show you that its not a good idea to trot out 40 year old relievers 3 days in a row.
  9. Say what you want about Obermueller, but the fact is Lehr certainly isn't any better.
  10. It was pointed out a week or so ago that Branyan has continued to be bothered by a sore shoulder. That was cited as the reason he doesn't get more starts.
  11. On an unrelated note, Reds just registered 5 spot to take 9-5 lead on Scrubs. Tying run scored on (you guessed it), a Balk.
  12. Not to be too picky but Santos' ERA took a jump after his last outing and now stands at 3.50, not 3.28 as shown in the first post.
  13. Hey Carlos, this is not the HR hitting contest and that's not Rich Donnelly on the mound.
  14. Yost just gave up one of the 15 outs he had left so he could leave his lefthander in the game possibly for just one more inning to face Vidro, Guillen, Wilson, Castilla. Nothing new for Ned who thinks nothing of giving away outs.
  15. With Davis at 77 pitches and a rather lopsided right handed lineup, I don't think Yost should go too many more innings with Davis. Especially with everyone in the pen rested and Sheets going tomorrow.
  16. Living in Chicago, I have not heard one member of the White Sox mention how tired he is and how they can't wait for a break. Somehow I don't think the red hot Astros are thinking that way either. They may feel that way, but to come out and say it is excuse making and I don't want to hear more excuses from this bunch.
  17. I figured this team was in trouble when I heard the trainer on the radio pregame making excuses that guys are tired and are "looking forward to the break", to recharge. Winning teams don't build in excuses nor do they coast in to the All Star break.
  18. "There is no way you can pinch hit for Santos considering how much work our bullpen has seen". That statement only applies to the 5 guys Yost actually uses in the bullpen. They may not be the ideal guys, but De La Rosa and Obermueller have both been MIA. Obie finally got a call when they ran out last night but he is hardly overworked. If Yost is afraid to use them in a close game, they shouldn't be on the roster.
  19. Did I mention how much Rickie Weeks reminds me of young Hank Aaron? On a sour note, it looks like the bad Overbay has returned. Maybe Corey Hart could come up and play a little first base?
  20. I'm starting to lose faith in Santos. I know he hasn't gotten run support but he's about to go 2-9. That's only 2 more wins than I have.
  21. Answers to quiz: Aaron of course Phil Roof Felipe Alou Roof had a cup of coffee with Braves. Alou had a brief stay with Brewers at end of his career.
  22. Bunting Hardy is one thing. Bunting by any major league non pitcher with 2 strikes is another. I can't count the times where I've seen guys fail to get a bunt down then stroke a hit with 2 strikes. Yost would rather give the opponent the out. You can defend the small ball all you want but until this team shows the slightest inclination of being able to execute it, they are better off using all 27 outs allotted them. After all it was two long balls that kept them in the game.
  23. You mean the Cubs scored the winning run without bunting a guy over?? Take notice Ned. By they way, whatever happened to Tommy Phelps?
  24. Leave it to Ned to use up 3 bench players in two AB's With Miller having to come into the game anyway, why not hit him and save Magruder? Now he's down to Durrington as the lone PH left.
  25. Maybe the tide is turning. Perez takes bat out of D Lee's hands.
