  1. Helling's line through 6: 1 Hit, 0 Runs, 0 BB, 5K. Naturally, he too has no run support. Rogers, Gallardo, Villanueva, Jackson, Parra. The Fab Five? (Yes, I am knocking on wood)
  2. Was on golf course for most of this game. Sounds like the hitters were on short rest. Should have used Cirillo, Hart and Gross in starting lineup. It's summer now, and day games after night games are tough. How about Carlos Villanueva? I've been arguing for a year that he has been way too low on Power 50. Think Toby will move him into the top 10 where he belongs?
  3. Yost does it again. Fails to remove a young pitcher after a good inning that would allow him to feel good about himself between starts.
  4. Off topic, but Yo Gallardo has a no-no going through 8 innings for Brevard County tonight with 3 walks and 10 strikeouts.
  5. We just saw the problem with carrying 13 pitchers. The manager might actually use the 12th or 13th in the biggest game of the year to date to protect a lead. Hope Joe enjoyed his cup of coffee.
  6. Round 13 pick, Chris Toneguzzi, is the first ever Purdue Boilermaker drafted by the Brewers in the history of the draft. Not surprising that he is a Canadian given Melvin and Ash heritage. Toneguzzi was Purdue's closer the last couple years. Is a physically imposing 6-5, 250 LBS. Fanned 37 in 30 innings of work. Three Purdue players were drafted on day one. Mitch Hillegoss (SS-Yankees) and Jay Buente (RHP-Marlins) were the other two.
  7. Yost has demonstrated time and time again that he has no clue on how to instill confidence in young pitchers. Some will remember two years ago when Hendrickson pitched 5 very good innings. It would have been a smart move to remove him and let him feel good about his outing. But no, that thought never entered Ned's head. Ben got rocked in the 6th. Ned messed with Obermueller so much, start a game, sit for two weeks, start a game, sit two more weeks, on on and on, that the guy became a basket case. Today, he basically tells JDLR, "We have no confidence you can get out career minor leaguer Mike Vento", then is surprised he can't throw a strike to the pitcher.
  8. This team is laughingly pathetic and anyone who thinks that experience is going to make Weeks a good defensive player is overly optimistic. His problem is lack of concentration, not lack of experience.
  9. Brewers should be familiar with Ortiz having faced him 4 times last year, knocking him around pretty good in 2 of those starts.
  10. steve267268, In your one post, you handed the team two excuses. Sure they are down two or (three) starters if you count Helling, but just about every other team in the division is down at least one starter including last year's Cy Young winner. And yes Prince is young, but for the most part this team has a lot of key veterans in the lineup, more so than many teams. If this team is ever going to get there, they have to stop looking for excuses and start playing winning smart baseball. Fortunately its only June 1st.
  11. Okay, lets take the blame game even further. Doug Melvin blew it. Yost could not counter the Pirates bringing in the lefty to face Koskie with the key insurance run sitting at 2nd base because he has 13 pitchers on his roster instead of an extra right handed bat like a Mike Rivera who would have allowed him to go to Damien Miller without jeopardizing the catcher position. As I think about it, Yost still should have countered with Miller and taken his chances. So, yes Yost blew it.
  12. "This is beginning to look like a Cub fans game thread.." That's only because the Brewers are playing Cub like baseball tonight.
  13. Now would not be a good time for Davis' agent to bring up a contract extension. If and its a big if, Sheets and Ohka ever get healthy, I'd think long and hard about dealing Mr. Davis.
  14. Yost lets Davis bat in 4th inning after allowing 6 runs in 3 innings because: A. Despite having 8 guys in the pen, he doesn't trust half of them to do their job and hold the Pirates where they are. B. With only 3 non catchers on his bench, he's afraid he'll run out of pinch hitters by the 6th inning. or C. He trusted Davis would get a hit there and settle down and pitch shutout baseball the rest of the way. Comon Ned, manage the team.
  15. For those that missed it, Villanueva showed good sink on an 89-90 mph fastball, an 81 mph slider that he kept away, tossed in a curveball or two and a change at 70 mph.
  16. That was a nice job Carlos. 2 K's, just a harmless single by Hall of Famer going against shift. Mabeus is getting hit around at AA tonight. Why bring him up? I'd rather see Villanueva get a shot at that 5th spot.
  17. Don't have anything to add other than can somebody please learn that Cincinnati has just one t and 3 n's. Carlos Villanueva gets his debut!!
  18. Am I the only one thinking "Nelson Figueroa" when I see Bush? Figueroa was good athlete, gutsy guy not afraid to challenge hitters with mediocre stuff. It worked for a few starts but then the roof caved in on him with regularity. I am beginning to think Melvin got snookered in the Overbay deal. As for Lehr (another guy traded for by Melvin), and Demaria, well I've seen enough of them to last a lifetime.
  19. Could Jaramillo's signing mean they are thinking about adding Barnwell to major league roster soon? I think the hesitation of adding Barnwell was not due to having to make a 40 man roster move or the need to keep 13 pitchers, but to allow some time for Melvin to see if a deal for a veteran backup infielder was possible. This move seems to indicate there was nobody out there that interested Melvin. Interesting that Thompson should choose to retire after throwing a complete game (albeit a loss) with 0 walks and 9 Ks.
  20. Besides Jenks, Moeller and T-bow, some real unsung hereos in this one: Jeff Cirillo: Double set up first run. Single kept 7th alive. Brady Clark: All he did was get on 4 times. Lehr, Kolb and Shouse: Shut em down relief. Kudos too to Eveland who didn't cave in after rough first.
  21. Don't read too much into Fernandez getting through some innings. Its getaway day for the Padres too and with the game well in hand, the focus is gone.
  22. I say, send down all the kids so that this nonsense doesn't start to affect them too.
  23. That last out lowered Fernandez' ERA from 15.75 to 14.54!
  24. Let's recap. They have an 85 man pitching staff, including several guys that haven't pitched since the Carter administration. The starter who has a career 1-8 record, has already allowed 5 runs in and you don't pinch hit for him with 2 runners in scoring position and nobody out. Amazingly enough, the starter then proceeds to pitch his way out of the game in the next half inning so our career minor leaguer can come in and serve up a fat knuckleball to the opposing pitcher. And you guys thought you'd never miss Wes Obermueller and Gary Glover.
  25. Two words: Carlos Villanueva. Yes, he's young and has been a little up and down at AA so far, but at least he got out major leaguers in spring training and you can't say that about Hendrickson. He's also won't compound his problems by walking a bunch of guys.
