  1. He would be on IR if the Packers signed him, but this game came down to 5-6 plays and none involved Mack who's sacks were non factors in the outcome. At the end of the first half, deep in their own territory, Rodgers tried hitting a covered Adams downfield on 2nd and 3 and turned down a sure first down had he run it instead. On the next play, Williams stumbled on a well blocked running play that should have been a first down. A first down there and they can run out the clock and the halftime score is 7-3. Then after the Pack recovers the fumble, Rodgers misses wide open receivers well downfield on 2nd and 3rd down. The second was a sure touchdown. Then Scott hits a mediocre punt that's poorly covered and Vitale gets called for holding setting up the Bears in Packer territory totally negating any momentum they had. Bears scored, stopped the Pack and when they needed a booming punt from Scott, he hits a short line drive to one of the most dangerous return men in the league. His return basically salted it away.
  2. I think if they move Anderson, it would be about 80% motivated by salary space. More like 95% if it involved prospects. But you don't trade mid rotation starter with reasonable control for several years without getting a haul. His value dipped and could be revived substantially with a solid first half.
  3. Padres are loaded with highly rated pitchers in their system. No way Stearns makes that deal without one of their top arms coming back.
  4. Arcia is an extremely talented player both defensively and offensively. I never agreed with the assessment that his ceiling with the bat was limited. He just got lazy and got in some bad habits. He has All Star ability if he can ever get off to a good start. That he's hitting in winter ball is a good sign.
  5. Anderson and Barnes together are worth a lot more than a couple low level middling prospects. My goodness, lest we forget Anderson is a middle of the rotation starter under control through 2021 at very team friendly numbers and Barnes while inconsistent, has been a late inning reliever for several years. If Anderson comes close to his 2017 form in the first few months of 2019, he could bring a package a lot better than this one. If they deal him now, Brewers need to assess his market value on more than what he did in 2018, and that wasn't awful by any means either. A 1.19 whip is nothing to sneeze at.
  6. I'm not a fan of a relief pitchers that allow a lot of hits and don't strike out many hitters. He can make the perfect pitch to a LH hitter and in today's game with the shifts it can be hit weakly to the left side and be a certain hit. Anthony Rizzo will wear him out. In short it's not what they gave up, it's what they're getting that I object to.
  7. Not in this instance. If you save money on 2B, then you have that money for midseason acquistions or even picking up a new catcher or pitcher now. And the position to save at is 2B, as Hiura is in the wings and will come up when he is conservatively can save us a year of control. Perez can play there if needed, especially if we pick up a lefty bat. And if Hiura isn't an improvement due to injury or performance, 2B isn't that hard to usually find a guy to trade for. Perez is a serviceable option. He's good defensively, hits LH pitching reasonably well and playing on a more regular basis might help his offense tick up. I think the idea is to get better production at the position at a good value and maintain strength on the bench by having Perez be the main utility guy. There's a lot of names out there for certain. Like I said if they can deal Thames they can address 2B with multiple guys who can also fill in at 1B and 3B adding production at the position and replacing a lot of Thames' punch. I named two in Dietrich and Solarte but there's others.
  8. do tell. we have a LF, CF, SS, 1b, and C that are RH, and our park favors LH hitters. I'd like another lefty if possible, especially since most pitchers are righty. I think the need for a RH bat stems from the rotation the Cubs throw at them. Certainly with Shaw at 3rd and Murphy at 2B, they'd have Perez in the lineup at one of those spots against a LH pitcher, but he's not the threat against LHP that either Shaw or Murphy are vs. RHP. A guy nobody's mentioned who admittedly is coming off a bad year is Yangervis Solarte, who was non-tendered by Blue Jays. He can play both 2B and 3B and he's got some pop from both sides. They could sign him and say Dietrich and have plenty of options for Counsell to maneuver around. I liked Solarte a lot when he was in SD. He's terrorized the Brewers with 8 HR in 84 lifetime AB's and a 1.035 OPS with almost all of that damage coming at Miller Park where he has a 1.167 career OPS. Seems like the perfect guy to replace Thames on the roster. He doesn't strike out as much as Thames and can be used all around the infield including giving Aguilar a rest on occasion at 1B. An added plus is he'd fit in with the other Venezuelans on the roster.
  9. James Shields logged 204 innings last year which was tied for 3rd in the AL and he was better than Lynn pitching in the same division for most of the year. I'll bet he could be had for one year at $10 million or 2 for $15.
  10. The focus seems to be more on TOR at this point. They have underappreciated starters for now. If they end up trading one or two of their current starters, I could see a guy like James Shields being a depth option. His ERA from last year is somewhat misleading. White Sox left him in games a lot longer than Brewers would in the NL. His numbers were pretty good. He is prone to the long ball though. Pomeranz has a track record of past success and like Miley, he fights a hit walk rate. I think it will take a major league contract but he's a guy to keep an eye on. Definite no on Perez.
  11. Counsell said the very same thing yesterday regarding 2B. Yes they could wait and get "someone" but the last two years Murphy was healthy, he posted OPS's of .928 and .985. Those aren't just "someone" type numbers. Even assuming age has started to hinder his performance, an .800+ OPS seems very likely.
  12. Murphy turns 34 on April 1. He probably would be platooned with Perez to keep him fresh and taken out for defense late in games. With as many strikeout pitchers as the Brewers have, his diminished range is not that big of a deal. Big question is if he can return to the premium bat he was in 2017. If so, he's clearly a better hitter than Moustakas.
  13. It makes sense for the Marlins to get back some major league talent in addition to one premium prospect so they have pieces to flip at the deadline. A guy like Anderson or Davies could be really valuable to them in July.
  14. I would too. Albers was a bad signing and they'll have to eat his remaining contract unless they can get some other team to take a flier, but they'd still have to eat most of it.
  15. Hey he was 35th ranked prospect by BA. Unfortunately that was 11 years ago. That's an example why ranking low level arms so high is pure folly, especially from big market organizations like the Mets.
  16. The tweet referenced in the initial post said the Indians insisted on Hiura as part of a deal for Kluber and the Brewers turned them down which is why Bauer is the focus. They'd want Burnes or Peralta for sure as the centerpiece but Brewers would not give up Burnes and Hiura for two years of Bauer.
  17. Not a major move.. Could be ... No one thought Wade Miley was a major move when he was signed. Did anyone think signing Chacin was a major move? He turned out to be the ace of a team that won 96 games. That was a much better move than signing Darvish would have been. I still think a lefty starter will be signed. Either Happ or bringing back Miley would be well within their budget. A bat like Dietrich seems plausible as well as a lefty reliever. I wouldn't rule out them more aggressively going after Realmuto in light of Goldschmidt going to Cards. If the Arcia of the last month and playoffs shows up from day one, it will have as great an impact as any FA signing could possibly be.
  18. They got "their teeth kicked in by Detroit?" They outgained Detroit 521-264, and didn't punt once. Crosby missed 3 relatively short FG in the first half alone and the other two drives were ended by fumbles. So even though they fell behind 24-0, they weren't getting their teeth kicked in. The biggest problem was their inexplicable play calls and execution on third down all year. They refused to run plays designed to get the first down or Rodgers ignored open receivers at the line to gain and continued to try high risk downfield passes instead that resulted in sacks, throwaways, or hail marys with little chance of completion. In recent weeks, their defense became depleted. They could force punts here and there but never could lock a team down for a half.
  19. We haven't even gotten to the winter meetings. Stearns acquired Chacin, Yelich and Cain all after the winter meetings. Not a bad haul.
  20. Lombardi would be nostalgic, but then I quickly remember how bad he was as the OC for the Lions. It's a copycat league, and definitely see them looking at assistants for the Rams, Saints and Chiefs. Of course when they hired McCarthy, he was the OC for the 32nd ranked offense in the NFL that year. I could see Kafka with the Northwestern connection. I wouldn't hold Lomardi's time in Detroit against him. It's not like they've won anything since he left and he obviously has great rapport with a veteran QB. Just the thought of Vince's grandson coaching the Packers gives me chills.
  21. Their offense isn't all that innovative and why would Fitzgerald give up the security of a contract that runs until 2030?
  22. Comparing total payroll to seasons past, especially more than 5 years ago is apples to oranges. Revenues are up significantly since say 2012, the last time the Brewers were coming off a playoff appearance. Brewers should routinely be able to handle $100 million and be able to push that up to $130 million with the boost of ticket sales that should materialize in the wake of 2018. Add in the fact that their payroll was extremely low in 2016 and 2017 allowing them to bank some in reserve, and they should be able to be players within reason.
  23. I think they'll sign Happ and trade Anderson.
  24. Oh I disagree. We would have a very poor offense with this lineup, especially with Arcia at SS. When Arcia's right as he was down the stretch and in the playoffs and the last 4 months of 2017, he's an offensive asset, not a liability. Hard to predict what your going to get but I'll take my chances with his talent that he's going to pick up where he left off.
  25. Sounds like putting Shaw back to third isn’t his top choice and that he would like to see him remain at second base. To me, it sounds like he’s looking at someone else to play third base, which I am all for. The lineup needs a shakeup since they were still fairly inconsistent this past season. I don't think that's what it means. The plan was for Schoop to be the 2B in 2019 had he shown anything at all. I just think he's got the door open for Moustakas to return for much less than he thinks he can get in FA. Personally I don't think Moustakas is going to get anywhere near the mutual option amount he turned down. I also think they are targeting Dietrich, and while he's played a lot of 2B. he might be slightly better at 3rd. A .949 career FP at 3B is pretty close to league average.
