  1. Saw during Cub-Dodger game that former NL umpire and Oshkosh's own Dutch Rennert has passed away at age 88. Dutch was known for his demonstrative strike call. During the winter months Dutch was a high school and college basketball official in Wisconsin. He refed many a game in and around Fox Valley back in my day including some that I played in. He was just as distinctive making calls on the court as he was on the diamond Rest in peace Dutch.
  2. The O's are in a huge fix, with two outrageous contracts on the books for Davis and Cobb. It's going to take them 4 years minimum and hitting on their top draft picks the next 3 years to crawl out of their hole. Bundy's by far their most marketable player and now's the time they should deal him to kick start their rebuild. Machado and Britton will get some value back as rentals but Bundy will cost a team a lot.
  3. Cabrera would be a nice pickup. There's such a huge drop off from the top 5 hitters to the bottom 4 in the Brewer order and Cabrera would fit nicely in the 6th spot. I'd be inclined to swap Villar straight up, and let him play 2B. Cabrera has yet to make an error in 28 starts at 2B.
  4. Definitely a steep price but it is far less than what the Orioles would be expecting for the return for Machado. Giving up Woodruff and Peralta would hurt but if you said this would be the package it would take to get Machado last year it would have been laughed at even during the off season. I believe the Orioles are looking for more but I just don't see a team out there that is going to give up more than one top 75-100 type prospect for Machado. As long as the offer for Machado exceeds their compensation draft pick, the O's will take the best offer out there. It's as simple as that. I don't think any team dealing for him as a rental has any greater shot at him when he becomes a FA. The FA market for him has lots of variables. Most of the big market teams are wary of exceeding the luxury tax threshold as it gets more punitive if exceeded in consecutive years. As for his trade market, the AL playoff teams look virtually set right now so none may see the need to unload top prospects for a bat. That leaves teams in the NL West and Central as most likely bidders. The Dodgers seem the most likely destination. Taylor's been decent for them at SS, but he can move to OF if Manny joins Dodgers.
  5. Brad Miller continues to show he isn't the present or future at SS. Glad they sent him to AAA to prove how horrible he is there. I actually would love if the Brewers give up any hope of him playing SS and just have Miller replace Sogard on the roster. The Brewers can just do what they did yesterday with Perez at SS until/if they get an actual upgrade at SS. Perez being hot right now buys Miller time to get acclimated. It won’t last. Perez is what he is. We will see Miller soon. Perez has hit .267 and slugged .410 since he became a Brewer. What he is is a guy who won't walk much but will get his hits and hit for occasional power. Plus he'll put the ball in play and batting behind the top 5 in this order, that should translate into RBIs. That's a lot more than they've been getting from Arcia this year. I think if Perez were ever given full time duty at one position that he'd hit closer to .280, and be a solid offensive player.
  6. Davies and Miley both going out to minors for rehab assignments. Miley can't be reinstated until July 9th, but will be interesting how or if they will adjust roles. Could Suter go back to pen? Can Miley turn into a loogy? Could they go with a 6 man rotation?
  7. unfortunately he's a 25 year old who basically was demoted from AAA after last year, I don't believe he has much stock Hager was drafted in the first round out of high school, and had some success his first couple years as a pro as a teenager. Then things got tougher for him. He likely always has had the talent to put up the numbers he is this year. I wouldn't write him off. Some guys take longer to mature.
  8. Very interesting. I think it points to what really could be the source of his problems and that's attitude. Arcia has always presented himself as a confident and sometimes cocky player. That's fine to a point. The game appeared to come easy to him and after his success in 2017, he may have just took things for granted. Now he's struggling big time likely for the first time ever. If he learns from it and puts in the work, he can emerge a better player. Problem for the Brewers is they need production now. He needs to be humbled and go back to AAA for more than just a few games and work on his craft. Brewers can give him a mulligan for 2018 and hope he returns in 2019 ready for a big season. For now though they have Perez, and at some point Saladino and possibly Miller.
  9. I can't see a need to add an OF if they demote Santana. Not with Thames seeing action out there. Perez is the 5th OF. Speaking of Perez, is there any reason he can't stay in the lineup either at SS or 2B, at least while he's in a good groove at the plate?
  10. I'm tiring of seeing soft grounders to third become hits because Shaw plays too deep to turn those into outs. You have the pitchers inducing soft contact and not getting outs. It's probably happened 3-4 times in the last week. Sure there are going to be swinging bunts that become hits, but these are simply soft ground balls. If he plays up a step and half, many are outs. Sure some balls will get past you that otherwise wouldn't but those are hard hit balls and on the pitcher. Stop making easy plays hard. Happened to Logan yesterday. As bad as he was, he made a good pitch but it wasn't turned into an out and a second run of the inning scored.
  11. There were many stunning moves by Counsell yesterday, not the least of which was walking Franco to load the basis so your pitcher who had walked almost a batter an inning up to that point had no margin for error. Why not just bring in Barnes or Williams to face Franco?
  12. I think either make sense. We don't see Iglesias much, but we know Mercer is solid. I actually think Pirates would be willing to deal Mercer in the division too in this situation. There's little love for the Cubs in Pittsburgh and he'd be just a rental so no long term consequences for Pirates. It's not the game changing type move, but worth considering.
  13. Feliz got more than double what Logan got and they stopped using him in high leverage situations by the middle of May last year before releasing him all together in June. I can't understand why Counsell would take out a starter with a sub 3 ERA with one on in the 6th inning and replace him with the 6th or 7th best option in the pen.
  14. In his Friday chat in response to a question about what it would take to get Machado Jeff Sullivan wrote: "I'm sensing a package led by two talented pitching prospects, somewhat close to the majors". That's probably the area of greatest strength in the Brewer system. Even if they let go either Burnes or Peralta and say Ortiz, the cupboard wouldn't be bare as far as pitching prospects. I too hate giving up prospects for rentals, but there's some cases where it so upgrades the roster that it makes sense. It was true with Sabathia in 08, and it's true with Machado now.
  15. Only went 3 IP. Probably a good bet he's coming up. Can't be argued that he's most deserving. I hope he can stick and end the shuttle back and forth for now.
  16. Peralta pitching tonight on just 3 days rest. Guessing it will be a short outing, then the 19th will be his regular turn.
  17. I thought I saw he made 2 errors a couple days ago. I also am on board with him sticking at AA, though I could easily be talked into a September callup exclusively for PH appearances and a taste of(hopefully) a playoff run. I wouldn't bring him up in September just to pinch hit. If he's ready, stick him in the lineup and have him help this team get to the postseason. We're talking about an advanced bat the likes of which we haven't seen in this organization in s long time playing a position where production has been an issue. Now if Villar is producing at a level that's determined to be an asset rather than a liability, fine, wait until they are a couple months into the 2019 season and then bring him up ala Braun in 2007. I still think he gets advanced to AAA for at least 2-3 weeks this season though.
  18. How about reacquiring Khris Davis? Oakland's going nowhere and he's only under their control through 2019. I get he's limited to LF but with Cain and Yelich manning the other two spots, they're still pretty solid defensively in the OF. Might need to move Aguilar to free up Braun to play with more regularity at 1B.
  19. Am I the only one who'd like to see Hiura in a Brewer uniform in September?
  20. Chacin is a joy to watch pitch. He's a throwback to the days when pitching was an art. He can vary speeds on all his pitches. He'll use a slow long delivery one time and might quick pitch you the next. Brewers are 12-3 in his starts. Amazing. That's what's great about this rotation. They're all unique and they all compete.
  21. I think it's time to take a look at adding Perrin to the 40 man. He's transitioned well to a strictly relief role in AAA.
  22. Anderson's performance last night was the TOR quality we've been looking for. If it signals the beginning of a stretch like he produced late in 2016 and most of last year, this team's fortunes took a huge step forward. I'd also feel confident with that Chase Anderson in a WC showdown if it comes to that. Williams and Barnes are both dealing as well.
  23. Santana still has one option remaining. He needs to go to Colorado Springs and work on things now or they may not get any value from him the rest of the season. Bring Miller up to take his spot. They're covered in the OF with Perez and Thames figures to get some starts in LF. When Saladino's ready, send Arcia back down. He didn't get enough time down there to get straightened out and much like with Santana, sitting around up here won't solve things.. When they need a pitcher to take a start, then send out Sogard.
  24. They have 3 choices for the 19th, Peralta, Houser or Wilkerson. Peralta pitched Sunday the 10th and he's in good form. Wilkerson's building his innings and was sharp in his last couple starts. Houser has gone past 4 innings just once and with the recent implosions in pen, he might be more valuable there.
  25. Not all bullpen moves work out. Logan and Albers look about done. Jennings shaky too but at least he can mop up. There's too many good young arms in the system (Houser, Derby, Perrin) to keep trotting these guys out there.
