  1. His swing needs a lot of help. Will be interesting to see if he's recalled to take Saladino's spot if they need to DL him. He's now 4 for 15 (all singles) with 4 K's all away from CS.
  2. Forget about the condition of getting agreement on a long term contract. That's not happening. Not for the Brewers or Cubs or Dodgers. Why would he surrender his bargaining power when he's just months away from benefiting from a bidding war. That fact makes his trade value less. Baltimore will look for the best that they can get as long as it's more than they would get from a compensation pick. Brewers have inventory to deal from that's well above the quantity that the Cubs do unless the Cubs are willing to part with a Schwarber or Happ which doesn't seem likely. Russell maybe, but Arcia and one quality young arm could trump that.
  3. Happ is the ideal target. He's far better than average at age 35 and he has postseason experience. Considering he's been pitching in the AL East, he's not going to be intimidated on the big stage either. Key will be if Toronto is far enough back in the wild card to sell.
  4. As it looks, the Brewers got a perennial major league All Star for a younger version of Keon Broxton, an infielder who's never shown the ability to hit above A ball, a pitcher who at best projects as a 5th starter, and Harrison, who there's still hope for more because of his age than his production. Only downside from Brewer perspective is that Marlins will steer away from dealing with Brewers again anytime soon which means Realmuto likely ends up elsewhere.
  5. Cole Hamels or J.A. Happ are the logical targets. If I had to bet, one of those two is a Brewer by August 1st unless Miley returns and is in really good form leading up to the deadline. The focus has to be on having a rotation capable of competing in the postseason.
  6. Myself I would have given Albers the 8th and Jeffress the 9th, but all's well that ends well.
  7. I can see Thames getting 1-2 starts a week at 1B and one or two in LF if he's hot but Jesus is the man.
  8. Machado has made it known pretty clearly that he's going to FA market after this year and why wouldn't he? The Cubs aren't going to be able to lock him up before that. He's not taking a home town discount. Period. Besides, the bill is coming for the Cubs in a few years and adding a $35 million a year guy to the fold is going to make retaining their own and staying under the luxury tax limit next to impossible beyond 2021.
  9. As long as Thames doesn't dislodge the 2018 MVP candidate they have playing 1B right now.
  10. Listened to most of the game with the Met announcers. They were a hoot. Ron Darling is the best color guy in the business. Too bad Keith Hernandez didn't make the trip. By the end they called Houser: "The Tahlequah Tornado", after having fun trying to pronounce his home town.
  11. They are 32-13 when they play someone other than the Cubs.
  12. Villar had a .930 OPS as a RH hitter in 2016 with 8 HR. I still think he has more power from the right side but for whatever reason, he's not showing it.
  13. Fastball command is the single most critical skill a pitcher needs to have success. If you don't have it, it doesn't matter how hard you throw it.
  14. I discount the age factor for Midwest kids like Suter and Roegner. They didn't play year round growing up. Roegner was almost 23 when he was drafted. He has no more pro experience than the guys he's facing, and less than most.
  15. Except that they had a catcher with major league experience hitting .328/.367/.467 at AAA who is just a few years removed from being a top 100 prospect. Frankly I saw Bethancourt in Arizona and thought he was very impressive. There's more to this than meets the eye. Maybe it's about pitcher development at CS and wanting those guys throwing to the same guys essentially all year.
  16. The only explanation I can think of why Arcia hasn't been sent down yet is that they're waiting for Sogard to get it going down in CS because they'd want him to replace Arcia. Arcia absolutely needs a trip to AAA. It's not like he's hitting in bad luck. He's simply not making solid contact. Working in the cages won't solve it. He needs to see work pay off.
  17. I don't see them dealing Perez. He's the face of their franchise and signed through 2021. They have a number of guys in final years of contracts but none are all that attractive or a match with Brewers. Herrera and Moustakas are their two most viable rentals who'll be available but neither fits a Brewer need. Merrifield is the most logical target for the Brewers. He's especially attractive because of his ability to hit LHP (.923 career OPS vs. LHP) and his ability to play OF as well as 2B.
  18. On top of everything, when rosters are expanded on Sept. 1, the Brewers will be able to add back players like Choi and Phillips who can make a difference down the stretch. Not all the teams they are competing against are as deep 26-30 as are the Brewers.
  19. CAN WE JUST HAVE THE BREWERS BE THE ENTIRE ALLSTAR TEAM? OR, ALL OF THE BREWERS AND A 2B and CATCHER? That's what everyone said about Aguilar's chances of making Brewer roster this spring. Generally the position is stacked but Goldschmidt and Rizzo should be out of the discussion this year and Votto so far is having a subpar year.
  20. I'll toss another name out there: Manny Machado. They do need Arcia to pick it up if they want to entice O's to accept him as a centerpiece of the deal.
  21. You can't turn on sports radio in Chicago for 15 minutes without hearing a discussion of the Cubs getting Machado. The Cub system at the higher levels is garbage right now. Getting Machado, and at the same time preventing the Cubs from getting him would be huge both on the field and psychologically.
  22. This was the year I expected Arcia to move from exciting defensive player with a developing bat into a borderline All Star. If there's been a disappointment on this roster so far, he's it. He's actually regressed. He still has time and he's young, but I'd be sniffing around about what it would take to get Machado even as a rental. The stakes are high in 2018.
  23. As long as the rotation keeps putting up zeroes early in games allowing the offense to take leads into the 6th inning, why mess with that?
  24. I'm just not seeing catcher as such a major weakness. Pina got off to a slow start but over the last few weeks, he's swung the bat really well and his defense is stellar. They need a better backup than Bandy, but they have that guy in Bethancourt. I'm confounded that he hasn't yet replaced Bandy. Could they use one more big bat? Certainly. That guy's out there. He's a rental and won't cost as much as Realmuto, but he'd make the lineup one of the best in the game. That's Machado.
  25. Considering that all it took Arizona one decent prospect and two very young lottery tickets to rent J. D. Martinez last year, I think the price for Machado isn't as high as some are speculating. Look at all the speculation about the Cubs and Machado. The Cubs have virtually no pitching prospects anywhere near the major leagues and that's the O's biggest need. So most are suggesting they'd part with Russell and maybe some 19 year old arm in rookie ball. I'd be willing to part with Arcia and Woodruff and worry about the SS position beyond 2018 while I'm nursing my World Series hangover.
