  1. Lots of very bad defense today Watching Pods out there can be painfull at times,he reminds me a bit of Sanchez, two guys with great speed but no natural instincts as an outfielder. They often get horrible jumps on balls off the bat and are very poor at going backwards on a ball over their head. The only balls they are good at are ones in the gaps, having played OF in hardball and softball those are the easiest ones to track. The true sing of a good CF are the ones who can read a ball off the bat going forwards and backwards, far and away harder to read off the bat than a gap line drive.Tracking down a liner in the gap looks pretty, but going backwards on a ball over your head is hard stuff,Pods is very poor at that.
  2. Well Robert for now at least i just dont have much faith in defensive stats,to full of variables.Maybe one day they can come up with defensive stats that you can put stock in,but the current ones are at best a small thing to consider when rating defensive players. I just know if i was building a team i dont think it's that hard to tell what players are good defenders just by watching them play. It's obvious by watching that Jeter has slipped as a defensive SS,that Helms has very little range, that Renteria is a very good SS,and Sanchez/Pods have trouble tracking balls while running backwards. I didn't really need a stats to tell me these things.
  3. And that play's only difficult for a third baseman without much range. Rolen or Chavez or Cirillo make that play look easy. I agree a guy like Rolen makes that play much easier At the very least, it's an example of why I like Zone Rating and Range Factor more than Fielding %. A good defender makes that play and gets credit for it in ZR and RF. I dont have the same faith in those stats that you do Robert.Rolen is an elite defensive thirdbaseman, according to ZR Helms and Rolen are equals, both posted a .751 ZR last year.If you put faith in both ZR/RF then you have to believe Rolen is a very very mediocre defensive thirdbaseman,Alex Sanchez is one of the best defensice CF's in baseball,Eckstein is a Gold Glove SS,and Eric Young is a better defensive secondbaseman than Brett Boone.
  4. I had a really bad vibe when Pujols came up.The guy is just soooooooo good,it's only a matter of time before he starts ripping rockets all over the park.I was hoping big time Kolb wouldnt make a mistake on 3-1 and leave one out over the middle of the plate. Those are such tough situations, you can't just intentionally walk on the winning baserunner, but outside of Bonds there is no hitter in the game i fear more than Pujols with the game on the line.
  5. Wow that was close I know it's early in the year, but blowing that lead would have really been a kick in the nads. One thing that was nice,we were hitting rockets all game long, even quite a few outs were smoked.
  6. We played a nice game minus the Sheets error and the short hop Helms failed to scoop up.Guys went up there and took walks, absolutely required for this team to score runs. One thing that was nice to see is there didnt seem to be any sure outs in the lineup.Granted the lack of overall power with cause problems at times, but the team looks like it's going to score a reasonable amount of runs.Hell even Helms was taking pitches and walked twice,Wynager must be getting to these guys. Vizcaino was outstanding among the pitchers,i didnt remember him ever having a splitter. With him throwing 95 again,he could be nasty if he's consistant with that split.
  7. Getting back to my original thought, are their surrounding circumstances(age, league, etc) that should temper my enthusiasm over de la Rosa?? This team has to find some quality pitching at some point if it ever plans to succeed.Since we all know it wont come from the free agent market, its mostly going to have to come from the minors. With the success rate so iffy with young pitchers, having a decent number of legit prospects is very important.De la Rosa seems to be pretty highly thought of,i'm glad we have him. It's one more solid pitching prospect that is in a group of young pitchers with a chance, hopefully just by odds a few pan out.
  8. I noticed an odd thing in Nunnally's year last year,he hit 25 homers and had only 53 RBI's in 428 at bats. How can you hit 25 jacks and have 428 at bats and only end up with 53 RBI's?
  9. Yea you would think with his K/IP ratio that he must throw fairly hard, wonder why he never was given a shot.
  10. I hope i'm wrong and i know hes still a young dude, but Krynzel just doesnt seem to be getting all that much better. Its good he walks more, but he still K's a ton and gets thrown out stealing way to often.Has anyone here seen him play often enough to say his stats dont tell the whole story, that improvement is steady with him.
  11. The more i hear of Week's play the more i get happy the Drays drafted Young.
