  1. 85-77 no playoffs Parra will not do much better than last year. Gallardo will be about Sheets level. Fielder will improve a bit, but Hall and Weeks will continue to disappoint. Gamel will be starting 3b by July.
  2. I get the feeling that JJ just enjoys playing SS more than he would 3B. He's played there (probably) his whole life. Why move over for some unproven rookie when you're highly compatible at the position, and are easily top five (likely top three) offensively in your league. It'd be unreasonable for anyone to expect JJ to move from short to 3B without any problem at all. I think this will be the main factor in his likely departure after the '10 season. Sad, but true.
  3. The fact that he had to be guaranteed to remain at shortstop tells me that he will be a little bit tougher to lock-up than we are speculating. From what we know, the only way him and Escobar would man the same infield is if Hardy would move to 3rd and Escobar to SS. I guess Escobar could possibly be placed at 2nd, but I don't know how likely that is. I really want to see JJ locked up long-term. Him and Braun are the two people that we would benefit greatly for the next half-decade if we could get him signed long-term.
  4. Is it unreal to think that they could trade Fielder and not Hart if they got Dunn? That would improve the defense, and we'd still be getting about the same production (with lower upside, obviously) out of the first base position.
  5. A couple friends of mine and I were lucky to talk to him following a game last season. We were just walking and happened to see him going to his car, and we yelled out "Mike!" or something along those lines (yeah, I know not very respectful), and he graciously came over and conversed with us for about five minutes and then autographed a picture before he left. It was one of the coolest things ever. I have a feeling that's not very common in the player's parking lot. I am glad he didn't end up in pinstripes (knock on wood).
  6. I agree with you Russ, but I don't know...the more I think about Melvin doing this, the more it makes sense. If he is able to do this, he can either: a) trade Hart + mid/top-tier prospect for a guy like Greinke or b) trade Fielder + low/mid-tier prospect for a guy like Greinke Right now, I don't know which I'd prefer it to be. I would almost say that it would be smarter financially, for the farm system, and for team chemistry to move Fielder instead. Hart's glove out in RF is top notch, and Dunn would at worst be the same as what Fielder is at First Base (I have to imagine he would be better). Obviously, we have more depth in the corner outfield position, making Hart more expendable, but I feel like it's too early to give up on a potential five-tool guy in right field who comes with no baggage and plays his heart out. I just don't see any starting pitching options out there right now for the 'crew; I feel that is the one piece missing from this team that will make them competitive with the Cubs. EDIT: The one guy I see on the market who fits with our team right now is Ben Sheets; however, I get the feeling that the likelihood of him coming back is slim. I just sense that him and Melvin have burned bridges, and that it's time to move in a different direction. In my opinion, he is the only guy that makes sense for this team right now, but if it's not possible, then we need to get creative.
  7. What a crummy off-season. With the new deal they got here in Northern Illinois, we weren't going to get FSN Wisconsin anymore, but I didn't mind because I looked forward to hearing Jim and Bob call the game every night. Now I'm really contemplating making the switch to MLB TV which won't help the wallet, but it just won't be the same without Powell in the booth. This sucks.
  8. He always seemed to be preaching the right approach, and it will fit real well in the A's orginization. I think he would have done well with a more veteran ballclub. The young guys just weren't cashing in on what he was telling them. Good luck to Ski!
  9. I think that Sabathia's time with the Brewers will be more remembered than say, Randy Johnson's stint with the Astros (if I am not mistaken that it was for the same length). His performance was unmatched in recent history, and he got a team to the playoffs for the first time in a quarter century in an epic way. I think that's why you are seeing so much of the highlights of C.C. being a Brewer. In a wierd way, it sort of thrust him into "legend status" even more so than his Cy Young did.
  10. I am currently considering signing up for the Netflix movie deal, and I was wondering if anybody on here has had any experiences with the program. It seems like a really good deal (almost too good to be true), but I was wondering if there is a "catch" of some sort that I should know about before I sign up for it.
  11. The longer this plays out with no result, the worse off it is for the Brewers in all sorts of ways. After all of this, he's going to end up with New York.
  12. Yeah, I thought he was as good as gone for retirement this year during the season, but I haven't heard anything of the sort since the season ended. I especially believed so when he ran out of gas to end the season. I don't think there's any denying that this was the case. I'm still expecting him to retire.
  13. Beane kept Howe and Macha on a short rope, and that was a big factor in all the problems that existed in Oakland. Beane doesn't put much stock in managers; if it were up to him, he'd probably just have a computer in the dugout and tell it what to do.
  14. It'll be interesting to see what the next guy does. I am hoping he goes a little bit harder for the college pitchers. That was my one problem with Jack Z. Good luck to him though, and I hope for the best.
  15. I am not at all impressed with the list compiled by TH. Two of the five are guys I would absolutely hate to have (Showalter and Brenly) and one of them scares me almost as much (Macha). Randolph is just another Yost as far as I am concerned. I don't know much about Jim Tracy. He had no talent when he was in Pittsburgh, but it seemed like he was always successful when he was in Los Angeles, and when he left they seemed to hit the tank (up until they got Torre, at least). Does anybody here know about his in-game decisions when he managed. It seems fitting that TH likes Brenly to be the pick because of his "saviness" with the media. I always got the feeling that Haudricourt wasn't a big fan of Ned.
  16. So I take that to mean that the money is on Bowa right now? I guess I don't understand how he could already be looking into an open coaching position if there still isn't a manager...
  17. Well, I have been skeptical of the liklihood of any chance for Davey Johnson throughout this whole process, but reading Haudricourt's post from yesterday tells me that he at least has an interest to return to the majors. Haudricourt claims that sources have told him that Johnson is interested in coming back to managing. So I will continue to hold out hope that it's him that they hire. I would be thrilled if it was him. I would be happy if it was Valentine. I would be mad if it was Showalter or Brenly. Everyone else, I don't really care either way.
  18. Does anybody know much about Macha. It seems as if the bet's on him at this point. I'm guessing the likely candidates, in order of the liklihood of each getting the job, goes like this: Macha, Sveum, Brenly, Showalter Just a hunch. Still think Sveum's and Macha's chances are about the same at this point though. EDIT (in response to crewcrazy): Beane has been known to interfere A LOT with the managing decisions, and if I am not mistaken, neither Art Howe or Macha got along with Beane all that well so that could have a lot to do with it. Beane was always forcing his guys to play the game his way, the Moneyball way (high on base, three run home runs, low-risk baseball).
  19. I am looking forward to one thing more than anything else: Yo's first full (hopefully, knock on wood) year as a starting pitcher. I am also interested to see what type of team they put out; I am suspecting it could be a new approach than they've had the past few years--then again it could be the exact same thing, which wouldn't really please me.
  20. ...and that" http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif
  21. I know Melvin said he wanted to take at least a week to make the decision on whether or not Sveum will come back. Well, here we are on Monday morning, it's been a week since the Brewers were eliminated, can we expect an announcement later today, or will they wait until after the playoffs?
  22. You need to have guys to hit you in though, even if you do have a high OBP. All they had this year was guys who would hit you in with a shot to the gap or a long-ball. It was rare to see a single drive a run in. That's exactly why we can't trade Hardy, but that's a topic for another thread. (edit: long nested quote --1992)
  23. i have to believe our owner will have a big say in who the new boss will be in 2009 I hope this isn't the case. Obviously, Attanasio will want to have some input into who Melvin decides on, but I hope it is minimal. The reason Melvin left Texas was because him and the owner clashed heads. It depends on what you think of Melvin, but he is the guy (along with Z) that took one of the least respectable franchises in baseball to legitamately being in it every year. I don't want the same thing to happen here. It seems as if nothing good comes from an owner who is too meddlesome.
  24. Instead of starting a new thread, I am going to ask in this thread... Do we bring Sveum back? Whether he deserves it or not, do you think he will be brought back by the orginization? It had to be asked, and I'm sure we'll be finding out in the next few days (weeks?).
  25. I hate one-pitch at bats. Obviously they didn't learn from their success last night. I am just appalled (sp?) by Hart at this point. It's like he doesn't have any brains to learn. He's gotta' be ignoring Skaalen because there's no way Ski hasn't said something to him at this point.
