  1. Not a bad idea. We've got to find out if there are enough people from Rio Piedras in Wisconsin to make such a promotion worthwhile for the Brewers. I'm not sure how we'd do that though. I approve of anything to get Kendall a couple days off though.
  2. Just warning you, a lot of people are going to bash you for being concerned with such a small sample. It may be interesting though, considering that some people think Yost doesn't handle pressure well.
  3. Well it's not like it happens every day.
  4. The Dodgers may eventually regret losing LaRoche (though I'm not sure, I'm not as high on him as a lot of people are), but the upgrade from Juan Pierre to Manny Ramirez is massive. From Pittsburgh's perspective, they get to unite the LaRoche boys. Boston came out pretty well too in that Bay is cheaper and a better defender than Manny. I think it works for all 3 teams.
  5. yeah, looks like LA jumped in and took Florida's place in that 3-way deal. It all depends on what they gave up.
  6. wow. I wonder who LA gave up? Unless it's Kemp or maybe Ethier, this should help them win that division.
  7. sure, they aren't good hitters generally, but they also aren't totally useless with the bat usually. People go too far in trying to defend bad hitting catchers. The positional average OPS+ over the past 20 years is 87. Kendall is well below that this year. So is Laird for his career. Granted that OPS+ slightly underrates Kendall because OBP is his strength, but not enough to change the point that he's been pretty bad with the bat, even for a catcher.
  8. he's not necessarily washed up in the sense that he's useless, it's just that Dye, Quentin, Thome and Swisher are all better than him so it's hard to see how he fits in Chicago, especially when you consider that he is an atrocious CF these days and has only played 2 innings at 1st in his career.
  9. well, this has been disheartening.
  10. BP says Bay may be going to the Red Sox instead. I guess the Manny deal may have been rekindled at the last minute?

  12. on a weird note, Bay's middle name is "Raymond", so his name contains 66% of the Tampa Bay Rays' name. A perfect fit, really. I think he should start going by Ray, sort of the opposite of what Albert Belle did (he went from being known by his middle name to being known by his first name).

  14. Prince looks to be getting closer to erupting with each passing game, but I'm not sure he'll do it in the media because of the backlash he has experienced over various comments recently (contract, diet, etc.).
  15. "Jason Bay to Tampa for Reid Brignac and Jeff Niemann" according to BP. Brignac is supposed to be good but I still like it for the Rays, especially because Bay will be around next year too.

  17. according to Jim Bouton, coaches pretty much do nothing helpful, but maybe that's changed recently. Not sure if Skaalen in particular helps or hurts or is just there. Just there seems most likely to me.
  18. It makes sense. See what he can do down the stretch and if he can help next year. They've hit on a few other guys other teams gave up on (Phillips, Dave Ross, Hamilton, Keppinger (though he's come back to earth)). I'd love to see Cruz get another chance.
  19. Huh, I didn't realize that was still around. Sounds like a good lineup though, too bad Kanye is there. edit: I just looked at the lineup and I see Okkervil River is playing on Saturday (followed by Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings, who are also pretty good). I wish I felt like driving to Chicago this weekend.
  20. Looks like Griffey did approve it and the Reds got Danny Richar (looks to be a Hernan Iribarren-type but he can play SS) and Nick Masset (looks to be a below-average 25 year old AAA pitcher).
  21. Hawkins was traded to the Astros for minor league2nd/3rd baseman Matt Cusick. Cusick actually looks like he might have a future, though he's a bit old for his league. The Yankees did well to get a guy of his caliber for Hawkins. He probably won't pan out, but he at least has a chance to. Hard to see what the Astros are doing.
  22. I wonder if the Brewers were in the mix, as they were rumored to be. Hernandez looks like an OK prospect. He's been getting teed off on in AAA this year, but he's only 22 and his track record before that was pretty OK. If nothing else, he looks like he could be a useful reliever down the road. BP rated him the Marlins 5th best prospect before the season, but I'm sure his stock has slipped some.
  23. Griffey has been below average for a corner OF, 1B, or DH this season. He can't play CF anymore, if he does, he's a huge negative for the White Sox, considering that he was the worst defensive CF in baseball 2 years ago and there's no way he's improved with age. The White Sox have received great production out of corner OF and DH this year. If the White Sox play Swisher at 1st and Griffey in CF, they are crippling their defense. If they move Thome to 1st and use Griffey as DH, they are also crippling their defense. Thome has played 4(!) games at first over the last 3 years. He doesn't even play 1st during interleague, despite his bat being much better than Konerko's. I don't really get the move for CWS, but I guess if they don't have to give anything up, they might as well make it. He could be useful as a guy that plays a couple times per week. However, if that's how they plan on using him, I don't know if he'll waive his no-trade rights.
  24. This is wrong, that rule only applies to reserve clause players (ie- first 6 years of service guys).
  25. Huh? $15 million in arby? That seems unlikely to me, more like 10-12 at worst (unless the Yanks offer like 5). Jason Kendall got a 2 year deal for about $9 million coming off a season much worse than Pudge has ever had, so I wouldn't be shocked if Pudge could get 2 years $15-16 million from someone. He may prefer that to a 1 year deal for $10 million, despite the lower annual value.
