  1. I don't get why we or the Brewers still talk about Gagne. His ERA is 7 and there are a bunch of better options than him. He should be a mop up man. Do we really want to see him pitching to David Wright or Carlos Beltran in a close playoff game? I don't want to see that, at least. Also, somewhat related to this, I see SI's John Donovan is in favor of CV being beaten up by Albert Pujols in order to show CV how to "respect the game". What a classless douche.
  2. I know the timing of this could be a little better because CV has not looked great his last few outings, but I think the question can be asked. Here are the stats for all Brewer relievers who have thrown 20 or more innings of relief this year (stats through 9/1): Salomon Torres 67.3 IP, 44 K, 26 BB, 2.54 ERA Brian Shouse 47.3 IP, 32 K, 13 BB, 2.47 ERA Guillermo Mota 47.7 IP, 43 K, 23 BB, 4.34 ERA David Riske 41 IP, 26 K, 23 BB, 4.61 ERA Eric Gagne 35.7 IP, 29 K, 19 BB, 6.81 ERA Mitch Stetter 23 IP, 29 K, 16 BB, 2.74 ERA Seth McClung 28.7 IP, 21 K, 21 BB, 5.02 ERA Carlos Villanueva 44.7 IP, 48 K, 10 BB, 2.01 ERA As you can see from the numbers, Carlos not only has the lowest relief ERA, he also has by far the best K/BB ratio and the 2nd best K rate. He's also pitched the 4th most innings and is only 3 innings away from being 2nd. Unfortunately, that month and a half of poor starting has dragged his numbers way down so it's not obvious he has been very good in relief. I realize the sample size is small, as it is for all relievers, and you can't just toss out the first month and a half, but I think it's clear that Carlos has earned a larger bullpen role down the stretch. I think he should pitch the 8th (not that I'm in favor of set roles, but Ned is). What do other people think?
  3. I'd have to think something from Jason Neighborgall or Steve Dalkowski (or a guy like them) would be the worst game ever pitched. Check out Neighborgall's career stats in A ball: 5 games, 1 IP, 12 BBs, 3 HBP, 9 WP, 12 ER, 108.00 ERA.
  5. Thanks. I guess between LaPorta, DiFelice, and the old Twins catcher Matt LeCroy, I unconsciously assumed the C would be capitalized.
  6. CC: That's not a Tuscaloosa dumpling! /squidbillies reference
  7. Kendall is a terrible hitter (75 OPS+). There is no reason he shouldn't be pinch hit for if there is a good option (ie- not Gwynn, Nix or Counsell) on the bench. Ned will never agree with that though, so it's all moot. I'm really looking forward to seeing this again, but with even worse results, all year next year.
  8. I am still curious as to where the information of this was found. So far the Brewers are 9 - 1 in games started by CC. If Weeks holds on to the ball and or makes a good throw it could be 10 - 0. Cy Young? Maybe...MVP...so far deservedly so.This really shows how ridiculous the MVP is. How can a guy who has played 11 games be the MVP? 11 Games! 11! I don't care if he cured cancer and invented a perpetual motion machine that solves the world's energy needs during those 11 games, there is no way somebody can be more valuable in 11 games than other guys have been during the whole year.
  9. They kind of do- Villanueva has a 2.05 ERA plus more than a K per inning in relief this year in 44 innings (only Torres has pitched more than 3 more relief innings than CV so his sample size is comparable to all the other relievers. It's just that his horrible starts are making his overall numbers look bad). It's time for him to be the 8th inning guy, despite a few shaky outings recently.
  10. The problem with Weeks is that other teams may not see him as a 2B. If he's seen as an OF, his value goes down quite a bit. He seems to be a little better this year defensively, but he still must rate as solidly below average. I think the Brewers hold onto him for another year though. I'm interested to see how Salome and LuCroy are ranked in this P50. LuCroy has had better results defensively but Salome has been better offensively at a higher level at the same age. Salome's OPS+ is 161 and LuCroy's in Brevard is 138 (still excellent). LuCroy is a year younger than the average FSL hitter, but Salome is 2 1/2 years younger than the average Southern League hitter. I think Salome should get the edge due to the better hitting at a higher level, but there seems to be a groundswell for LuCroy.
  11. Is there any definite word on what the roster moves were to get Gamel and Salome on the 40-man?
  12. I was wondering about that too. I think some towns on floodplains in the midwest have done that, but obviously New Orleans is a lot bigger. I think either that or really investing in levees and dikes and stuff like the Netherlands (60% of their population lives below sea level) has would be the answer. Unfortunately for NO, the money probably isn't there to do either of those things.
  13. It was 68% black and 28% white. That leaves 4% of other minorities (or slightly more depending how they counted the 3% of Latinos). That's a 17-1 ratio if you are talking about minorities from New Orleans. I think it's obvious what group lcbj was referring to.
  14. There were white people too, but lcbj specifically referred to minorities. And why would people necessarily want to stay in New Orleans if their houses got washed away? How is it a moral failing to want to move somewhere where the chances of getting devastated by a natural disaster are not as high? I always thought people were free to move wherever they wanted in this country. I don't get why it would be different for Katrina victims.
  15. They have seen the influx of minorities that scrambled to the area post-Katrina. Apparently, all you have to do is mention/prove that you were a "victim" of Katrina and you are moved to the top of housing and employment lists in Eastern Texas. Couple that with other government welfare programs and there is no incentive for a majority of "victims" to return to New Orleans now how can this be read as anything other than accusing minorities (mostly black people, based on the fact that pre-Katrina, 68% of the population was black) of scamming the government? Once again, somebody decides to take some anecdotal stories about a few people getting away with a scam and using those to paint a whole group of people (in this case, black people from New Orleans) as unsavory criminal types. It's the oldest trick in the book. I also like the touting of "research" (see I can use sarcastic quotation marks too!) which probably consisted of listening to Glenn Beck and Rush Limbaugh's calumnious rants on the radio.
  16. Uh-huh. And the use of quotation marks around the word victim was just a mistake, I guess.
  17. what the hell is this? Now race-baiting is allowed on this site?
  18. Yeah, Sutton's favorite player. He must be going nuts with excitement.
  19. Before the season, the Brewers had the 2nd highest bullpen payroll in the majors, behind only the Yankees. That may have changed with trades or whatever, but they definitely have allocated a not typical amount of their payroll to the pen this year.
  20. I guess I may be ignorant on this issue, but if the plant is closed and in severe disrepair, who cares what happens to it? Sucks that you had to get up to deal with something the company you work for doesn't even want. Also, sucks for the kids, who probably figured it was abandoned and just went for a makeout session/general mischief. They probably got a bit of a surprise when 6 squad cars showed up at a collapsing factory.
  21. Speaking of injured guys, what's the word with Yovani? If he gets a look (and Russ comes back), that's 36 guys. I wonder if any team has ever used the entire 40 man in September? I don't think any have recently.
  22. Yeah, I never click on a Reilly article because doing so would help ESPN justify their decision to hire him. Obviously one person won't make a huge difference, but I'm trying to do my part.
  23. I would hope Branyan would be called back too, which makes 34 guys on the roster. 35 if Stocker is called up as well. I guess it would be unlikely to see Salome get the nod considering that everybody up gets like $50,000, which can add up. I think that would be a shame, I'd like to see him get rewarded for his .974 OPS in AA. Anyway, among that group of 10 probable adds, only Nelson and Gamel will be making their ML debuts, so I echo Mass's special congratulations to them for breaking through.
