  1. The problem with this scenario is that the Brewer got taken for a ride in the last deal they made with San Diego. Maddux would be a nice fit, but he's not likely to do better than a 4.25 ERA down the stretch, and what is that worth over what Bush would do? It certainly isn't worth 6 years of Gamel or LaPorta or Escobar or Jeffress or Salome or some of their other top prospects. Is it worth 6 years of Gillespie? 5 of Gwynn? I don't know.

  3. I'd have to say Stetter or DiFelice. DiFelice hasn't done much to deserve a demotion, but they may prefer to keep a 2nd lefty. Either way, if Gagne doesn't pitch well, I have to think his spot is on thin ice. That $10 million is spent anyway, so if he can't get it together there is no reason to throw away the season on top of the $10 million. I wouldn't be shocked to see him traded or even cut by the end of July if he can't improve on his 7 ERA.
  4. Try Ben's Bike Shop on 10th & Lincoln. I've never tried to sell them a bike but they have hundreds of used bikes for sale and they must get them from somewhere. They have by far the biggest selection of any bike shop in Milwaukee that I've seen, so they'd be your best bet, imo. They have a toll-free #, you could give them a call and see if they're interested in whatever it is you've got: (888) 275-5111. local # is 384-2236 They've always been nice and helpful when I've shopped there, so even if they aren't interested, they may be able give you a tip on where you could sell your bike.
  5. The thing about Rickie is that while his offense may be (slightly) above average for a 2B, his defense still leaves much to be desired. He may not be badly hurting the team, but he's not really helping it either yet. Let's be honest, the Henderson, Aaron, Morgan, Sheffield comparisons were just way off base. He's an ok player with the upside to possibly have a 110-120 OPS+ with bad defense. However, there isn't a great chance of him reaching that upside very often, imo. He doesn't know what he's doing at the plate, which seems like it would leave him open to wilder swings than other guys. What I mean is, I feel he could have a peak 5 years of 111, 92, 119, 104, 87 or something like that, rather than 112, 115, 109, 117, 115 or whatever. I would support moving him out of the leadoff spot ASAP, because I think it is having a deleterious effect on his approach. As odd as it is to say, I think he might take too many pitches. Leadoff is the only spot he's spent significant time in during his career though, so it's hard to get a feeling for whether he'd use a different approach farther down in the lineup.
  6. This is what I dislike about pythag records used on the micro level. Why would the good record be a fluke any more than the poor pythag be a fluke? If the team's pythagorean record is still that bad at the end of the year but they have kept winning at a .553 clip, I will agree that it was luck. However, we aren't even halfway through the season yet. Also, their expected pythag is a bit better than their actual at this point (only 1 win though). I think it is too soon, just like it was too soon to say Arizona was a great team because they had like a +80 run differential after the first month.
  7. I saw on another website that Branyan is slugging over 1.200 on contact so far this year, which would be by far the best in history. However, Branyan is, I believe, the 4th best on contact slugger in ML history (behind Babe Ruth, Ryan Howard, and Jim Thome) so while that is a fluke, he could possibly keep it nearly that high.
  8. I don't like her. I hate when people make a big show of trying to fight someone when they know there is no chance such a fight will actually occur. She's done that several times and it's a huge pet peeve of mine. None of the male drivers would actually hit her (it would ruin their careers to punch out a woman on television) so she knows she's in no danger acting like that. It is annoying to me, and probably to the other drivers, because it either means she's doing it all for show to make them look bad, or she can't control her emotions at all (I'm talking about her specifically, not women in general), which doesn't seem safe when you are driving 220 MPH.
  9. By old and decrepit, I just meant that Maddux is 42 and eventually some team that's counting on him to do what he's always done will get burned. Also, the Dodgers gave up less than Gwynn to get him back in 2006. If the Padres want more than Gwynn and maybe a C- prospect, they want too much and the Brewers would be foolish to capitulate, imo.

  12. How about Gwynn and maybe Gillespie for Maddux and Giles. Or would that be too much or too little to give up? It seem kind of fair to me, but maybe San Diego would want more, in which case I would pass. A Giles/Cameron platoon (with Hart in CF when Giles played) would be pretty sweet offensively. However, Maddux and Giles are both too old and decrepit to really count on to be good, so I wouldn't give up a ton. actually, now that I look at it, I like getting Giles more than I like getting Maddux. Maddux would be nice too, but Giles would really give the offense a boost over Cameron's sub-.300 OBP. However, Cameron does play the great defense.

  15. except that last year the Indians had Sabathia and Carmona and they both got dominated in the LCS. Getting Sabathia is no promise of anything. He could do great, he could do poorly. Which is why I favor a more long-term plan, with more than one shot at a post-season berth.
  16. Santana had a no trade clause he would only waive for a team ready to give him an extension. That pretty much limited the Twins options to like 4 teams. Sabathia can go anywhere. Think closer to what the Orioles got for Bedard. but that right there shows the folly of this kind of deal. Sabathia and Bedard aren't good enough to turn a team around. The Mariners gave the farm for Bedard and he's been average and they're the worst team in baseball. Any pitcher can do anything for 12-15 starts (much less 3-7 starts in the playoffs), I mean, we saw Jeff Suppan and Jeff Weaver carry the Cardinals to a title in 2006 and then we saw Sabathia get teed off on to the tune of a 10.45 ERA in the 2007 ALCS.
  17. With all the talk recently about various trades either for stars or of Brewers' stars, I was hoping to get a little perspective on where the team's top 5 prospects (LaPorta, Gamel, Escobar, Salome, Jeffress) would rate among the top prospects in baseball at this point. LaPorta was ranked 31st in baseball by Baseball Prospectus before the season, Jeffress was 76th. The other 3 were not ranked in BP's top 100 but have certainly been making their cases to be considered top prospects this year. I'm not necessarily looking for an exact number of where they would be ranked just a range. Like, LaPorta would be a top 20-30 prospect, Escobar a top 120-150 prospect or whatever you think.
  18. I would tend to agree with that, because Lucroy is apparently a little more well-rounded, while Angel maybe has the better tools (rocket arm, good bat). Not to take away from Lucroy's tools, of course. Having two 22 year old catchers with career OPS's of .850 or better is pretty exciting.
  19. He was funny, but his latest HBO specials were embarrassingly bad. Still sad to hear he died though. His cameo in Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back was one of the funniest scenes from any movie in the last 10 years, imo.
  20. A 1 out of 2 success rate isn't that impressive in this context because the team would be giving up 2 or more prospects that already are on the verge of making the majors. Let's look at his successes. If you want to count getting an average player with the #2 overall pick as some big coup, fine. But let's look at the pick # of the guys he's taken in the first 3 rounds and have panned out: Weeks (2) Braun(5) Fielder(7) Gallardo (46) Hardy (56) That is from 6 years of drafts (I say we only look up until 2005, because the 2006 guys are still too young). Braun and Fielder panned out very well but were both top 7 picks. Hardy and Weeks are about average. Gallardo was probably his best pick of the first 3 rounds to date, considering draft position. 3 above average major leaguers out of 15 or so picks (the Brewers lost a few picks due to compensation, not sure the exact number) is not that great (I mean, it is in context, but not by the numbers). If we think Gamel or LaPorta will be above-average guys, we are then trading them for 3 months of Sabathia and a relatively slim chance of replacing them with a comparable prospect. It's not a negligible chance, but I feel it's slimmer than most here seem to think. of course, flags fly forever, etc., etc. but I thought the Brewers were trying to build a sustainable franchise.
  21. Luckily, they don't really need to make a choice. Catching is at such a premium that trading either one of them until it is clear that the other one is a good ML starter isn't really worth it. I'd hang onto both and let them compete over the next couple years. You don't want to give up on one of them too soon and have him become Dioner Navarro or Jason Varitek. Sometimes catchers take awhile to fully develop, so hanging onto them both would seem the safe bet, imo, especially because neither one has the profile to bring in a premium player by themselves. Using either one as a piece in a package would be potentially franchise crippling, imo, unless we want to be doomed to another decade of Kendall-like retreads.
  22. I think some people are viewing LaPorta as more valuable than Gamel because Gamel is doing what he's doing thanks in large part to a (probably) unsustainably high batting average, while LaPorta is doing it with a BA in the normal range, possibly suggesting he can translate it to the majors with more certainty. However, Gamel is younger, has more defensive value (again, probably), and is left-handed (not that that should be a huge concern depending how much better you think LaPorta may be. I mean, if they are equal hitters, we would prefer the lefty, but if LaPorta is a guy whose OPS will be .50-.100 points higher, I prefer LaPorta, despite him being another righty). I prefer LaPorta (slightly), but I wouldn't trade either one unless the team got someone they could control for a few years, but we'll see what Doug does, I guess. OTOH, I wouldn't trade any of the top 6-7 prospects unless the team got back guys who would be around for a few years. I know extra draft picks are nice, but the draft is such a crap shoot that a bird in the hand is definitely worth two in the bush, imo. Even Jack Zduriencik has blown numerous 1st round picks and only 3 of his 2nd or 3rd round picks have even played in the majors and one of those is Gwynn Jr.
  23. Yeah, they have some catching depth, but Salome is the most advanced. Wouldn't dealing Lucroy make a little more sense?
  24. I thought Brantley was a poor defender as well? Not to mention LaPorta, why would bad defense hold back two of the guys, but not the other two? I'm just curious what the rationale would be.
  25. I didn't say you need a union to get free stuff, I just said that MLB guys have a union.
