  1. The only fitted Negro League hat I have is a Baltimore Black Sox one, but I found that randomly at a Lids. I like it a lot because its the only 8 1/4 hat I've ever found that I didn't have to have specially ordered. I haven't found a good online source of them unfortunately, and I've been looking because of the fortuitous sizing. Here's a Milwaukee Bears fitted hat, but not the one the Brewers have been wearing. It's pretty cool though, imo. link: http://www.negroleagueshop.com/pd_milwaukee.cfm
  2. Why would the Brewers want Blanton (unless someone got injured)? He's had a very Dave Bush-esque career and is having a bad year. I might give up Cain and another guy or two for him, but not any of the team's top 10 or so prospects, which a deal would supposedly require. This kind of reminds me of some Oriole fans I saw who swore it would be a great idea for the Brewers to give up LaPorta and Escobar for Daniel Cabrera because "Cabrera could put it all together". I don't like the idea of paying premium prices (whether in prospects or dollars) for average-ish talent.
  3. Hu hit .360/.500 last year between AA and AAA, but it was his second go round in AA and the Dodgers' triple A team (Las Vegas) plays in a notorious launching pad. With those caveats though, he's definitely a nice prospect. He's getting a little old, but I could see a team thinking he'll be a league-average or slightly better SS for a long time.
  4. That can't be it, imo. I think it's more likely they are trying to make it known what they are offering so that other teams have to make their best offers now and Cleveland can't drag this out till the end of July.
  5. If they want another corner outfielder, they should just sign Bonds. He'd be cheaper and no talent would have to go out the door. And before people get all up in arms, the Brewers have plenty of guys who have actually tested positive for things. It may be an unpopular move, but it would help more (short and long-term) than trading for Holliday would.
  6. but what if he was out of town or something or the tickets were for somebody else? I don't see why you couldn't ask for them to be shipped wherever you wanted once you paid for them.
  7. well, if Attanasio is really the driving force behind the Brewers interest in Sabathia, there's no reason one of the Steinbrenner's couldn't force the Yankees to make a trade. They could pretty clearly easily get the trade done by simply offering Chamberlain. I'm 99.99999% sure they won't do that, but they could still offer Hughes or Kennedy and maybe one of their young OF prospects (Jackson/Tabata) and be right in the mix. I'm pretty sure the Indians would rather have Chamberlain than any 2 guys the Brewers would give up. I'm not as sure about Hughes, but I think they would prefer him to any deal the Brewers would be offering as well. I'm not saying the Yankees are more likely than the Brewers to consummate the deal, but with their legendary impatience, bottomless pockets (which could be key if the Indians have any bad contracts they want to dump cough*Hafner*cough), and several good to excellent young players, I don't think that it's so outlandish to think they could be the ones who end up with CC.
  8. no, it usually means that something he's doing during his wind-up is telling hitters what kind of pitch is coming. For example, some guys noticeably slow down their delivery when they throw a changeup, which makes it less effective for them because the hitter can see it coming.
  9. I'm not so worried about giving up JJ because of Escobar's allegedly fantastic defense and JJs wild inconsistency. I'd rather give up Weeks and move JJ to 2nd (where his lack of range would hurt less) though. Escobar and JJ would probably be an excellent combo up the middle. Of course, they'd probably blow it and move Escobar to 2nd instead so JJ won't cry like he normally does when he doesn't get what he wants.
  10. As a reliever this year, he's really kept the walks in check (5 in 23 innings). If he can keep that up for the rest of the year, I would support him being moved back to the rotation next year. If the walks come back, he may be better suited as a reliever because he K's a lot more guys as a reliever, which makes the walks hurt less.
  11. The Brewers could pick up a free agent who no one wants and who would probably help them more than a certain rotund pitcher would.... will they (or anyone) be bold enough to do it though?
  12. I have to admit that this is exciting. Even if they give away some hall of fame talents in the trade (not saying that that is likely), we've made it through 26 years of bad baseball. If the trade doesn't pan out and they never make the playoffs with this group, we can probably make it through another 26 years. I mean, it's not like having a bad or average baseball team to cheer for is the end of the world.
  13. Peralta's career numbers are better than JJ's, I wonder what it would take to get him included in the deal if the Indians insist on JJ. Peralta would be a very nice placeholder for the rest of the year (and maybe 2009 as well).
  14. much better? Their career Iso's are .079 vs. .077. Sure, Nelson's is better than that this year, but it was much worse last year, so I don't know that you can point to a definite improvement moreso than just random variation.
  15. No, I don't agree with that. Ibanez is clearly a better hitter than Nelson is at this point. A .921 OPS in AAA MLE's to a .750 or so ML OPS in a neutral park. Ibanez is putting up a neutralized .790. Nelson may have a future, but it's hard to totally ignore 5 years of terrible hitting (for a 1st baseman, if he was a shortstop it would be a different story) even if he does have an injury excuse. I don't think he's much of an asset at this point, so I'd rather have Errecart. I don't think either one will amount to all that much, but Errecart is 2 years younger so I'll take him. and it's funny to bring up Errecart's K problems in defense of Nelson, who has also routinely struck out 1 time every 4 AB's in his career.
  16. I wonder if Hardy's streakiness is out of the ordinary. Because he can sure look terrible for months on end, kind of like Jenkins. But then he has these opposite kinds of streaks where he looks like an almost Hanley Ramirez type of hitter and you don't want to get rid of him because of the chance he could keep it up all year some year. I dunno. If they want Hardy, would they give up Peralta? Or would they use one of them at 2nd? Peralta and Sabathia for Hardy, LaPorta and a low-level pitcher or two would be fine with me, I'm pretty sure. But would Cleveland throw in Peralta?
  17. Yes, lets disregard all the times he hasn't been dominant. Then we're guaranteed to be getting a dominant pitcher! Look, all I'm saying is that baseball is not like basketball where a superstar can be traded for (like Gasol) and lead a team on a 26-5 stretch. Baseball is much more volatile and unpredictable. In fact, look at CC's postseason numbers last year after his Cy season.
  18. C.C.'s ERA is bloated from a bad first month. In his last month he has 5 starts, is 3-0, a 1.80 ERA, with 41 K's, 6BB, and only 27 hits in 40 innings (that is a WHIP well under 1). I think that is a marked improvement from dave bush and it will help our bullpen a ton because he is averaging 8 innings a start over those 5. I struggle with dealing LaPorta because I think he will be very good, but CC will definitely help this team. I'm not talking about CC's ERA for this year, I'm talking about the fact that anybody can do anything over 2-3 months. There is no sort of guarantee CC will keep pitching like he has been the last month. Meanwhile, his career numbers are good, but not great.
  19. We all seem to be overlooking personality in this. If he really is dating Madonna, maybe they get along great, who knows? Similar to the Dwyane Wade/Star Jones rumors. It's a shame people seem to judge athletes spouses/girlfriends solely on their looks. I think it speaks to a certain shallowness in our society, where we all imagine we could one day get rich and famous and have sex with all the people we once fantasized about. Well, maybe some of the people who have done that have found that it isn't the best thing in the world. But whatever, maybe I'm wrong. I just get sick of women being judged by their looks so much.

  21. The Phillies have a young catcher who is also dominating AA like Salome is. His name is Lou Marson. They're the same age, but Marson's value is more in the OBP, whereas Angel's is in slugging. Depending on what Marson's D is like, I would think Angel would be more valuable because he has a much better track record (drug suspension notwithstanding). However, the Phillies supposedly have taken him off the table, so they must consider him one of their best prospects, if not their best. That makes me think we are undervaluing Salome around here.
  22. I don't like this strategy of 2008 apparently being the only year they plan on competing. I thought they planned on building toward something, not panicking and going for it all in one year. I mean, I'm impatient too, but CC is just as likely to not do much to help (ie- league average-ish ERA) as he is to break out a Randy Johnson 1998 type of second half. It would be exciting for them to get him, but giving up 12-18 or more years of what seems to be good bets of above average play for 2-3 months of above average pitching seems like a stupid deal, even with the draft picks. Melvin is putting so much pressure on Jack Z by trading away guys that are already developed in order to get draft picks. I don't like it, though I would obviously hope it worked out.
  23. I think they are only allowed to negotiate with a new team if their current team gives permission. However, I'm not sure if they're allowed to do that during the season or if that is an offseason quirk.
  24. Shouldn't Garciaparra try a Chris Weinke or Javon Walker and go to college for football? Not that I hope he fails at baseball or anything, it's just that his chances of making it to the majors appear to be slim. Meanwhile, NFL teams are always looking for a good kicker.
  25. When I was a kid, hearing the various profane things that drunks would yell at players and each other was one of my favorite parts of going to sporting events. Packer games at County Stadium were especially good for that purpose.
