I'd hold on to Jeffress and Salome as well, and probably Escobar. Any of those 5 leaving in a trade for a few months of any of the guys expected to be available at the deadline would be a huge mistake, in my opinion. If a team wanted a package of say Cole Gillespie, Chris Errecart and any two pitchers not named Jeffress, fine. If they want more, Doug should walk away rather than make a panic trade like he did last year. -
I got in a little bit of a thing with Justice on his blog last year when he wrote an article talking about how Milwaukee's young guys choked away the season is September. I pointed out that, on the contrary, Braun, Prince, Rickie, Corey, Gallardo, and Villanueva all played like MVPs/Cy Youngs down the stretch and that it was generally the vets who didn't carry their weight. To his credit, he admitted he should have looked a little deeper. However, I feel he is the kind of writer that just goes for any cliche/easy answer he can get his hands on without regard to whether or not there is a basis for whatever he is saying. A young team missed the playoffs? They obviously missed it because they were too young and couldn't handle the pressure. A team isn't living up to expectations (not that he personally had any, apparently)? Must be poor chemistry.

nobody is talking about using video, just giving updates on what is going on. video would obviously be verboten until the rights holder allows people to use it.

most carriers have 3G already included in their monthly price, or at least that was my impression. When I got some 3G phones for the first time, my bill didn't go up. ATT is way late with the 3G (a fact which has been rehashed may times) so it may be hard to do a direct comparison across carriers.

The new iPhone is $200, which is down from the $400 the old one was. However, ATT requires a 2 year service plan (it did with the old one too) and the price of that has gone up $10 per month. That means that the price cut is actually a $40 price increase. Pretty funny when you think about it. Brilliant marketing by Apple and ATT to get the news of their "price cut" so widely reported.

You know, this situation reminds me of the time before the internet, when we were mostly dependent on the Journal and the Sentinel for sports news. It seemed like every time some Buck or Brewer got traded, the columnists would talk about what a well-known cancer and horrible guy the person who just got traded was. Well, why did you never mention that before? I wonder if something similar will happen this year (actually, now that I think about it, it kind of happened with Estrada, though that started really building before the end of last season). Somebody will get traded and subsequently scapegoated for the team's problems, but if we go through the archives of the various writers, I'm sure we won't find any kind of pre-facto column about why the guy (whoever it eventually is) was ruining the team.

I'm not sure there is a law against giving a lot of updates. When I used to watch Mike & The Mad Dog on YES, they would sometimes be watching a game in the studio and give pretty constant comments/updates on it. Enforcing any such law would be difficult, to say the least, so even if there is one, I doubt MLB (or any other league) tries too hard to stop people from giving updates. I mean, if they did, this site would be in trouble because of the In-Game Threads.

Justice is not what I would call a conscientious reporter. Like so many of them nowadays (maybe always), they just report what they've heard from some random guy or their impressions and don't do the kind of research/fact-checking that you'd like to see. That said, would it surprise me if there are issues in the clubhouse of a team filled with underachieving players? No, it wouldn't. Playing poorly can't be good for your attitude. Does "chemistry" matter much? Who knows? It seems unlikely, considering baseball is mostly one on one confrontations and players can't give a guy the freeze out like they can in basketball, football, soccer, or hockey. Still, if it really is as bad as Justice says, might as well axe Yost and see if a new guy can help. It's not like Ned is a tactical genius, good chemistry was supposed to be his thing. Not saying it would definitely be his his fault, but it is hard to see any positives with him if the clubhouse is fractured and frosty.

I've read this like 10 times and I can't tell for certain what you are saying. Are you saying that if there are two pick-off plays that close, an umpire should call the guy out on principle?

You just answered your own question when you mentioned the phrase "call up Chris Woodward". Plus, the arby clock would be pretty irrelevant at this point in the season, especially considering that he would be sent down again once JJ was healthy. If JJ was to go on the DL, Escobar is the guy I'd like to see. If nothing else, it would allow the Brewers (and us) to see how his defense translates to the majors.

eh, I don't see the big deal in this case. Having a manager and horrible player be ejected from the game is not really that noteworthy, especially when it didn't affect the game. If Berkman or Tejada had been ejected or it was a big scene like when Molina laid down his gear at the plate, I would agree. I'm more surprised that ejections aren't listed in box scores. Also, we're judging people based on their mug shots now? Seems petty, but whatever.

You may have seen it, but Dersu Uzala is worth seeking out as well. Odd that it won an Oscar, yet it seems to be the most obscure of his post-WWII era films. I guess that can happen when the Soviets had it shot in 70mm, then lost the original prints. My top 10 Kurosawa films: 1. Ikiru 2. Rashomon 3. Seven Samurai 4. Ran 5. Yojimbo 6. Stray Dog 7. Throne of Blood 8. Dersu Uzala 9. High And Low 10. The Bad Sleep Well Ranking the top 10 is hard. Seven Samurai being 3rd on my list is no insult, I'd probably rank it 4th overall among all directors. Perhaps I'm too much of a stereotypical Kurosawa-fanboy. I'm partial to The Bad Sleep Well because I really like the title, which may have colored my impression. Red Beard, Drunken Angel, Kagemusha, Sanjuro, The Hidden Fortress, I Live In Fear, The Lower Depths all can make a case for being on the list too. Much to my shame, I haven't seen Kurosawa's first film (Sanshiro Sugata, or its sequel, for that matter) or his last two (Rhapsody In August, Madadayo). I've heard all of these films are worth watching, but I haven't seen them playing or for sale anywhere. I'm sure I could find them online, I guess I should seek them out.

The 3rd Man for mystery, although whether that is American is debatable. Also, I didn't like it that much (I think I saw a really bad print), but it seems to have a good reputation. Breaking Away has to count as a sports film. At least my dad, who is a cycling fanatic, always counts it as his favorite sports movie. I think that should be there for sure, along with Raging Bull, Rocky, Bull Durham, Chariots of Fire (or was that wholly British?) and Hoosiers. Hoop Dreams, obviously, unless documentaries will be separate at a later year like you conjecture. I like When We Were Kings a lot too, if documentaries within a genre are eligible. Million Dollar Baby, possibly? I wasn't a huge fan, but it did win the Oscar. I've heard Pride of the Yankees is good but I've never seen that. The Hustler would have to be top 10 if pool is a sport. There have to be some good car racing movies, don't there? But I'm drawing a blank. The really interesting thing would be if they counted Gladiator movies or Kung-Fu movies as sports films. Gladiating was a sport at the time, and martial arts (in the form of judo) are in the olympics. If they count those, I think we can count on Karate Kid being there, though I haven't seen that in over 20 years and I don't remember liking it, so I don't think it would be on my personal list.

According to UZR (an advanced defensive stat), Cameron has been excellent in CF this year. I'm still not very confident in the reliability of any given defensive stat, but he has that in his favor, at least. Also, what is with Schroeder and his continual idiotic diatribes about what a 2nd spot hitter should be? Who cares what the guy's specific strengths and weaknesses are as long as he's a good player and/or gets on base at a good clip? I'm very unimpressed with the idea of "productive outs" and things of that nature, which have been shown to have no correlation with winning. -
don't forget that Jed Lowrie is still around too. He may not have the upside of some of these guys, but he looks like a pretty serviceable middle infielder.

If we're including Leone films, Once Upon A Time In America has to be there for Gangster films. I personally feel that Once Upon A Time in The West is his best western, though it isn't as cool or iconic as the man with no name trilogy. Sci-Fi: Alien has to be there, imo, or Aliens. One of them definitely. How can courtroom drama be a category, but not documentary? There are a heck of a lot more good documentaries than there are courtroom dramas unless you're gonna count any movie with a courtroom scene as a "courtroom drama". If you can count foreign films, "M" would have to be one of the ten best courtroom dramas, even though it's a kangaroo court of gangsters in the film's denouement. Rom-Com: What about Trouble In Paradise? That has to be one of the ten best, doesn't it? The thing i don't like about the "gangster" genre is that it's too open-ended. Can any movie with criminals be a "gangster" movie? Or does it have to be organized crime like the mafia or whatever? If it doesn't, Menace II Society is a contender, maybe Fargo or Blood Simple or Heat. Rififi or Run Lola Run or High & Low if foreign films count.

They should do a top 10 Kurosawa films category. That would be a tougher competition than some of these other categories. Of course, AFI may only do American films, but if so that's another reason to take these lists less than seriously. Also, how is animation a separate genre? That's just stupid. Can anybody argue that Grave of the Fireflies (for example) is not on par with pretty much any live-action war movie? Why would animated films need to be bastardized by having their own category, which implies that they can't compete in the other genres on their own merits?
