  1. ****IMO, more than 99.9% of music (and art in general) is derivative. It's discovering that <0.1% that keeps it worth listening to, at least for me. **** so the 99.9% isn't worth listening to on it's own merits, it's just chaff? I couldn't really disagree more.
  2. Ha, no proof? 1 30 home run hitter in 20+ years (Morneau)? Finishing near the bottom of the league in slugging % for those same 20 years? I think it's fair to say that there is something rotten in the state of denmark. If you disagree, fine, but don't assume I look down on them, because I don't. I do, however, think their offensive strategy is lackluster. They've been above the league average in slugging% 3 times in the past 16 years, and the 3 times they were above, it was just by a total of .025 % points. Many years, they've been well below average. If you think it's a coincidence, fine, but either way I'm not going to look at the Twins as some great example of developing hitters.
  3. Interesting stuff, though I wish he would have focused more on the music and less on his senior paper. It is a shame that copyright is becoming such a hindrance to art. I doubt most modern music would exist (as we know it) if not for jacking other peoples beats/riffs.
  4. not to be glib, but why even mention this? 11 IP is totally irrelevant.
  5. no, I'm not saying they are telling him to hit poorly, but their franchise is well-known to put an almost comical emphasis on "doing the little things", even at the expense of doing the bigger, more important things.
  6. ****If the actual law is that bikes are supposed to ride on the line or to the left of the line, that's insane. **** that may be your opinion, but the law is to ride in the street, as you can see from the DOT language that RU Rah Rah helpfully posted above. also, I didn't misunderstand anything, you're advocating for cyclists to ride in the run-off part of the street (which I feel would be fair to call a gutter), not on the actual main street as is their right, not to mention legal obligation.
  7. *****their current young power hitters, namely Justin Morneau or Delmon Young.***** they seem to be telling Delmon something, considering he's got only 10 extra base hits for the season (none of them home runs) and an IsoP of a Counsell-esque .071.
  8. Also, bicyclists are supposed to ride in the street, not in the gutter. That's the law. Not everything is solely for the convenience of people in cars.
  9. Now this might be going too far. My family are inveterate cyclists and we belong to various bike clubs. They all stress the fact that you must obey all traffic laws, just as you would if you were in a car. My dad in particular is a stickler for such things because he doesn't want to give people in cars the impression that cyclists have no regard for laws and thus imply that cars don't have to respect cyclist's rights in return. He's also extremely big on safety (in fact, he still has his old Bell Biker laying around somewhere, which was the first bike helmet that actually did anything), which is the biggest reason to obey all laws. The vast majority of cyclists that I know follow all traffic laws. However, there are many people who merely ride bikes and don't know anything about safety. anyway, I guess what I'm saying is that motorists should have a little more respect for cyclists, considering the fact that people in cars are ensconced in a ton of steel, while cyclists are wearing a 10 ounce helmet and jeans, at best.
  10. The thing about MLEs is that I'm always extremely wary when they translate someone's batting average as .325 or .350 or something like that. There are 3 guys in all of baseball who are legit .325 or above hitters (Pujols, Ichiro, Vlad). I think in almost all such cases, it's fair to knock the player down to a .300 or so average and make the corresponding demerits to his other numbers. In other words, I put more stock in an MLE that says a guy will hit .290/.390/.490 than I do one that says a guy will hit .325/.375/.500 or whatever. Maybe that's wrong of me, but I just feel that the chances of anybody's true talent batting average being .325 are extremely miniscule. And I realize that MLE's measure what happened, they don't try to predict what will happen going forward. It's certainly possible Gamel could hit .325 in the majors for a month or two. I just think that anyone hoping for that kind of production right off the bat is likely to be disappointed. I don't know, maybe what I just said didn't make any sense. Maybe I'm losing the ability to tell.
  11. ahh, college towns. Pedestrians seem to have no regard for their lives. Stepping off the curb without looking, turning across 4 lanes of traffic without even so much as a glance to either side- it's all par for the course. I'm like toolivebrew, I've always been surprised that there aren't more serious accidents. once, on campus in Minneapolis, I was caught behind some ass on a bike who was actually weaving from curb to curb down a busy street. I got out and set him straight, but I still can't believe someone could be so stupid and reckless, not to mention selfish.
  12. A similar guy that I'd be much more interested in is Edwar Ramirez. The Yanks picked him up out of an independent league a couple years ago and seem to mostly be using him in a mop-up role despite his 0.00 ERA this year and 46 K's in 33.2 major league innings. His numbers since the Yankees picked him up in 2006 are just absolutely stunning. In 130 1/3 innings at A, AA, AAA, and the majors, he's struck out 208 guys. That's 14.4 K's per 9. Also, he's only given up 7 home runs over that time. The problem is, who do the Brewers have that they could offer? LaPorta, Gamel, Salome, Jeffress, etc. would be too much, but Counsell would be too little. They could use a guy to take some innings, but would Bush be too much? Or would they laugh at that offer? sorry, didn't mean to digress like that. as for Erasmo, he has great ERA's and WHIPs throughout his 630 pro innings. He seems to get by on great control. He hardly walks anybody, but he doesn't strike anybody out and doesn't have a really low HR rate. He seems like he would be worth a shot, at least more so that Zach Jack, but I'm not sure how good he'd be. For example, ZIPS has him projected at a 4.75 ERA (and that was in Florida's park), which is pretty below average for a relief pitcher. edit: whoops, now I see Zach has been optioned back to AAA.
  13. I wasn't making the argument that those scrubs were as good as Masterson, just that they had had more minor league success. Perhaps I could have been clearer. I was just saying that Masterson is no sure thing, just as Hendrickson or any number of other prospects haven't been sure things. The only sure thing I can remember the Brewers having (pitching-wise) has been Gallardo. Gallardo is obviously worth more than LaPorta, but I would think a guy closer to Yo than to Masterson would be what LaPorta would be worth. Also, the middle relief thing was due to Masterson having only one pitch. I don't see why he'd be looked at as a stud ML starter right now, any more than dozens of other guys would. I just think the whole premise of trading LaPorta for a pitcher is stupid, especially for a guy who, according to BP "leaves many scouts believing that the bullpen is his ultimate destination."
  14. ***Just imagine if LaPorta was on the Twins!*** yeah, it would be hilarious to see Gardenhire complaining about LaPorta not grounding out to 2nd enough. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif
  15. I don't know, I'm in a bit of an argument on another site over whether dealing LaPorta for Masterson would be smart and I just don't see what's so great about Masterson. Sure, he gets hype because he has a nice sinker, but where are the results? Or am I crazy? It seems to me like LaPorta has a lot more upside and is also more likely to reach his upside.
  16. damn, that's terrible. What can you even say?
  17. I've done the print your own ticket thing at a few parks: Principal, PNC, Jacobs, Kaufman, and maybe even Yankee, I don't recall for certain. I think it's pretty common.
  18. Hey everybody- my wife and I went to the St. Paul Saints game tonight and they were giving away a "bobble-foot" doll, supposedly to commemorate something called "National Tap Dance Day" but actually seeming to be a tribute to Sen. Craig's well-known Minneapolis-St. Paul legal troubles. http://saintsbaseball.com.ismmedia.com/ISM3/std-content/repos/Top/News/Bobblefoot.gif We don't need two of them so I figured I'd see if anybody wanted to make an interesting trade offer. I'd also include a ticket stub & schedule, although it's a print your own ticket, so not a conventional stub. It seems to be a pretty unique bobble (the right foot is the thing that bobbles).
  19. I'm not a fan of this, but Villy has been pitching pretty poorly. Hopefully he'll get it turned around in the pen and get back into the rotation ASAP.
  20. Indeed. I was actually kind of surprised that Ned went with Dillon over Nunez.
  21. I think that a move like this couldn't hurt, but I've never heard of the blogger before and no one else here seems to know if he's credible either. I guess we'll see.
  22. Anybody looks good when they hit 6 home runs in a week. I don't see what all the excitement is about in this thread. So Braun thinks the team didn't expect to win. Maybe they did, maybe they didn't, but it's still pretty standard athlete talk when a team is going poorly. I don't see what's groundbreaking about what he said or about his performance so far this year. I'm happy that Braun is on the team and that he's signed for 7 more years, but if his becoming the "team leader" coincides with a stretch where the team has won four of its last 16 games, you really have to question what the concept of team leader is even supposed to mean. If he's supposed to literally be leading the team to where he wants them to go, he's doing a spectacularly piss-poor job of it.
  23. He didn't sound drunk to me, though I guess he could have been.
