  1. Rule question: In the AL, if you move the DH to a defensive position, you lose the DH spot, and the pitcher has to bat. However, if you bring the DH in to pitch, do you lose the DH spot? Say Kieschnick came in to pitch the 7th, and then Estrella took over in the 8th. If the DH spot was due up in the 9th, could Kieschnick still bat? I think no, but I don't have a real good reason behind that. You didn't pull the DH, per se, but it seems kind of like cheating if you could get away with that.
  2. Vaughn has done about as much in the last few years as the other guys, for what it's worth. Does Jenkins make us better right now? Yes Do we have anything close to as good as Jenkins to fill in? No Do we have a corner OF in our system that right now could be projected to hit like Jenkins? No Is Jenkins a darn good bat when he's healthy? Yes Is there a risk of trading for non-major league players? Absolutely Are we going to be competetive with Jenkins in the next 2-3 years? No Might Jenkins be past his prime once the team becomes good? Possibly Will he become injured for an extended period in that interval? Quite possibly Could his trade value get any higher than it is now? 50/50 Is his offensive production right now a fluke? Could be With all those factors combined, would I recommend trading Jenkins? I don't know. By trading him, you are pretty much giving up hope for the rest of the season at least, and add another gaping hole into the lineup. If you trade him for a few top-tier prospects, there is even more hope for the future, but those guys may turn out to be nothing. It's a tough call. If you wait til next season, he turns into a rent-a-player, which probably doesn't help his trade value. I guess unless I was blown away by an offer I wouldn't trade him, because the team needs to keep some semblance of value on the major league squad, to appease the fans and show some little bit of dignity.
  3. I predict Richie Sexson will be a darn good player. But, please keep everything in one thread. Nothing wrong with predictions, but real odd ones like these should stick together.
  4. An addendum to Monday's Daily Menu: MARYVALE (AZL): The even littler Brewers open their season today at lovely Maryvale Ballpark. The AZL season actually began yesterday right under our noses, but the Brewers' squad was the team of the day off (the league has 9 team, featuring two Royals teams). The Athletics hop on a bus and drive about 5 miles across Phoenix over to Maryvale. No starting pitcher has been named for the Brewers, although I'm going to go with RHP and Hawaii native Hubert Pruett as the guy. Like Helena, these kids will all be on strict pitch counts. No radio or anything by which to listen to them, but such is life. As for the Helena starting pitcher, 7th round RHP Brian Montalbo hasn't made it into a game yet, and if there is no injury concern there, he's more than due for a game. Pitchers Eveland, McKenna, and Mendoza are also likely to get in.
  5. On a related note, Khalid Ballouli is still about 2 weeks away from a rehab assignment.
  6. My sources win by a matter of seconds!
  7. 2002 30th rounder Justin Gabriel, a diminuative lefthander who got off to a slow start in Beloit and had only been pitching decently of late, has been let go by the organization. His final ERA in Beloit was 4.23. The 5'8, 24 year old Las Vegas native pitched at the University of Louisiana-Lafayette before being drafted. He pitched in Ogden last season, with a 3.98 ERA. Taking Gabriel's place is 2001 3rd rounder RHP Jon Steitz, who had been rehabbing in Beloit for most of the season.
  8. By process of elimination, it looks like the pitchers going tonight will include Grybash, Ty Taubenheim, Nick Slack, and Gabriel Mendoza. Eveland also might be due for another appearence.
  9. I hear it about the Twins. I was standing up and clapping when Rincon threw that wild pitch, and the other guys were just sitting there in a daze. Sometimes the Brewers are a darn fun team to watch, and this was one of those nights.
  10. Gwynn probably won't be at Beloit for a couple of days. Usually, they send guys down to AZ for at least a few days just to go over things, get players used to pro ball, etc. I wouldn't even be surprised to see him play in a game or two for the AZL team before goign to Beloit. I'd give it a week or so, but they may push him a little faster.
  11. I don't get to watch the Brewers on TV that often, and this was a darn fun game to watch, especially me, one Brewer fan in the midst of 5 Twins fans. Sheets was spectacular tonight, and the Brewers beat a vastly superior team with a little discipline and a little luck. However, after watching Osik tonight, I am beginning to agree more with his haters than supporters. He had a horrific game, especially defensively.
  12. With Opdyke, the Brewers have 4 catchers in Arizona, and Opdyke will see the majority of the AB there. The other three are Bravo, Guhring, and Olayemi. If you're thinking of Lozada (as I know many of you are, he was either released or sent to the Dominican. Ogden has 5 catchers, but Corporan, Frost, and Rottino will all see major time elsewhere. Eure hasn't played a game at catcher in Beloit, though he is useful there. In High Desert, I'm assuming the 4th catcher you're talking about is Belcher, and he's no longer a catcher. He doesn't have an arm at all, and while his bat was nice as a backstop, he can't play D. He is done there.
  13. That Cagua club is flippin' horrible.
  14. The hardest thrower we drafted and have signed is probably 27th rounder Dan McKenna, a reliever who juices it in the 94-97 range. Nick Slack, the 20th rounder and a closer prospect, also can get it up in that range. For others within shouting distance of 94-95, I'd list off Wooley (6th), Montalbo (7th), and Marion (8th), but they are all starters, so velocity wouldn't be that high running in a game, obviously.
  15. Thoughts... RHP Todd Gelatka, 2000's 28th round pick, hopefuly healthy this year Gelatka was a DFE a couple years ago, along with Minnesota native and fellow pitcher Ryan Trytten. Gelatka also has what I would assume to be the highest ERA in club history, with a good 'ol 243.00 last season. 18 year old Dominican lefty Carlos Ramirez is in Helena; Toby is smiling for his Power 50 favorite See? I'm not cracked. This dude is athletic as they come, is left handed, and he's only 18. C Alberto Segura, a 19-year-old Dominican When a little birdie told me the other day that there were only 3 catchers left in Arizona, I was trying to figure out which ones they were, and I would have been pretty certain that Segura was one of them, but congrats to the young guy. On a related note, the catching corps in Maryvale could be murderously bad this AZL season - prove me wrong, Arturo Bravo, Simon Guhring, and Gbenga Olayemi. 2B Guilder Rodriguez is a Venezuelan who will be 20 in July Watch out for this kid. Has the ability to be oustanding defensively. SS Augustin Septimo, a Dominican product who just turned 19 years old I've heard some very good things about Augustin. Don't be surprised to see him pop up on the Power 50 sooner or later. Faster than Krynzel, they say. Where is OF Francisco Plasencia, the Venezuelan who turns 19 this week? Toby knows something Weird how those things work http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif
  16. Found on Judd Richardson's page: VENGEANCE OF SHE HAMMER DVD BARBARIAN QUEEN I think Judd has found a nickname.
  17. The article says 36 total guys have been assigned, tho the Pioneer League roster limit is 35 active, so someone is on the DL. 21 pitchers assigned? I want you all to sit down and imagine Daverry Lopester trying to handle that staff. That would be excellent to watch. I count 20 pitchers, and one of them, Mega Thomas, won't be pitching anytime soon last I heard. Who is the other guy? Who's starting? Who's the closer? Would you go insane if you had this many guys on your staff? Judd Richardson, Dana Eveland, Eric Henderson, Brian Montalbo, Gabriel Mendoza, Tim Dillard, Alex Correa, Greg Moreira, Mitch Stetter, Tyler Shepple, Dan McKenna, Greg Kloosterman, Phil Hendrix, Ricky Stover, Kenny Durost, Dan Grybash, Simon Beresford , Eric A Thomas, Eric M Thomas, Nick Slack. I'm going to go out on a limb that no one else cares about and go with Tyler Morrison as the other guy. Or... could it be... Carlos Ramirez, golden boy of the Power 50? As for the 15 positional guys, here's who we have presently assigned to Helena: Catchers: Lou Palmisano, Manny Ramirez Infielders: Will Lewis, Josh Murray, Justin Barnes, Andri Gomez, Carlos Corporan Outfielders: Drew Anderson, Francisco Plasencia, Manuel Melo, Robby Deevers, Terry Trufholz That is 12 guys, not 15. So, educated guesses on the other 3 guys: Catchers Jeremy Frost and Vinnie Rottino, and corner infielder Taylor McCormack That's a lot of guys, and a lot of guessing. One more week until we fire up the Pioneer League. Yay.
  18. Holy Doug Jennings, Batman. Yah, as Jim pointed out, a couple new guys have really made a lot of difference so far in the Indy lineup. Let's hope the fix is a long-term one (aka rest of the season) and not just a spurt for a couple of games. And how about Keith Luuloa? A 978 OPS from a 28 year old AAA utility man that is generously listed at 6'0, 180? Wowsa. The heck with Clayton. The heck with Cruz. Let's get Luuloa in there, stat!
  19. Well, I can name one guy I'd rather see signed more quickly, if it's all the same with the Brewers. I echo the sentiments of surprise in seeing Hawk signed so quickly. I thought he might turn into the Wilhelmsen of this draft, talented high school kid who got taken lower than expected taking awhile to sign before being bowled over with an offer. And who knows, no one expected Moss to sign last year, so here's to hoping that there's a little extra in a billfold for the Brewers to go after Meier, Maday, and/or Zink, too.
  20. Anyone want to place odds on which indy league the Brewers will take Buddie's replacement from? I'm going Northern League, 3:1.
  21. Scouting is everything At this point, I'm a better scout than a teacher, and I'm guessing that's going to continue, so for my sake with a possible future in the business, I hope you're right http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif
  22. I still remember Sheff's first game as a Brewer, taking over for an injured Dale Sveum at shortstop. Not to pull an Al here, but honest to God, I have no problem with the guy, and if somebody wanted to compare Weeks to him, that would be an honor for Rickie. Maybe I'm just too young to fully appreciate what harm Sheffield did to the franchise.
  23. That's an interesting point Igor, and something I beleive in. Not to belittle the draft process at all, because getting the right guys into the system is about 30-40% of the battle. The bigger part, IMO, tho, is getting those guys to succeed, which, also IMO, is tougher than the draft process. For all the hours of work that go into drafting players, there are that many more hours spent in tutilege of the players drafted, trying to get them to suceed and become major league contributors. But, I guess that's what makes me a player development guy and Patrick a scouting guy http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif
  24. Ila Borders? Anywho, I don't think you can get too worried about the Brewers not drafting this guy. It's not like the Twins will let him pitch with both hands. Any club that would let him do that would be borderline insane.
