  1. I never have any faith in Hall(against a righty) or Gwynn against anyone. I'd have liked to have seen Nelson get a shot in here somewhere though.
  2. Still don't get why you would pinch hit for Counsell as he is one of our higher OBP players against righties. Been confused by this complaint all year.
  3. The offense has stunk for sure but it also stinks that we lost 1 game by an error on an easy play and another on the umpire squeezing our starter majorly for an inning.
  4. yep, CC was majorly pinched and it probably ends our season. Reason 10,000 I wish we went to a computerized strike zone.
  5. Zambrano is only going to get worse from here on out as well in my opinion. I'm not sure the Cubs can just sit on the roster they have now if they expect the world series next year. It is a roster than can take the division again I'm sure, just not sure if it is enough for the world series.
  6. Sheets pitched 29 healthy games this year and 20 healthy starts last year. In those 49 starts he is 25-12. Put that into a standard 34 start season and he is 17-8. Lincecum has 57 career starts and in those 57 starts he is 25-10. Not really seeing the point.
  7. I could see an argument that Durham doesn't give you an upgrade over Weeks but Hall has been utterly worthless all year long against righties and Counsell is an upgrade in my book.
  8. If he can just get through the first inning I'll be happy. That is his biggest danger zone.
  9. I think the hitting coach can point out flaws in a players approach on video and over time it can have a positive effect on them. It is one of those things that is pretty hard to put a value on but the value is not 0. Ultimately it comes down to the player to make any actual change in his approach and each player improves at a different rate. I don't think we have any natural hitters on the team other than Braun and his approach isn't so great. Braun is the one guy on this team that can swing at a bad pitch and still get hits off of it on a regular basis. Fielder can sometimes but Braun does it a lot more.
  10. I disagree with this completely. Plate discipline is something that grows with time for the majority of players. It is why OBP tends to trend upwards with age even though AVG tends to trend downard. Part of the problem is probably that we have a young team that is still learning how to be hitters and not just swingers. Part of it is the drafting philosophy that valued power over contact. Part of it very well may be an organizational approach to hitting too, studying video etc is a huge part of the game now. Personally I think the single largest improvement that most young players make year to year is understanding the strike zone and forcing the pitcher to throw you good pitches to hit. When you see some huge breakout player who suddenly 'gets it' it almost always comes with an improvement in BB/K rates. That is why I said at the start of year that I expected Hardy to be the "break out" player on the team even though it would be subtle. A shift up in OBP while keeping the same SLG makes him a much better hitter but with only a small jump in OPS. It seemed like he was learning how to hit late last year and I figured it would show up this year.
  11. From June 23rd to July 11th Fielder put up a line of .162/.208/.279/.487 with 18 K in 72 PA and 2 GIDP. From July 12th to August 13th Fielder put up a line of .327/.468/.704/1.172 in 126 PA. Slumps and hot streaks are just part of baseball. You can't really predict when one will start or end. You can look at almost any player in baseball and see the same big jumps all over the place in their season. Hart's current slump really started on September 6th. Since then he has a line of .132/.159/.197/.356 not counting yesterday's game. That is downright ugly but at some point he'll break out of it. Given the alternatives right now I guess we just have to hope it is sooner rather than later.
  12. For what it is worth Manny's HR last night was on a ball in the dirt, he just is able to still drive balls out of the strike zone for a HR. The Brewers have had problems against the change up all season long. I don't know if it is just a player thing where we happen to have a bunch of guys that can't hit them or if part of it is a hitting philosophy of the team that isn't working.
  13. Brewers stink against the change up so it is just not a good matchup for us.
  14. No way to know just yet how serious it is. My sinking suspicion is that pitching him in September made things worse and now it is something serious instead of a just rest it type of injury. The fact it went from discomfirt to intense pain during the process worries me a lot. I'm no physical trainer myself but it sounds like this was all mishandled on the Brewer side of things.
  15. I am under the assumption that we will lose the next time we face Hamels. Change up throwing lefty just seems like a difficult matchup for us. That means this is a must win game to continue our season as far as I'm concerned.
  16. I'm ok with Weeks, he played average defense overall on the season and was a pretty average hitter. Hall is the one that has to go, he has really hurt the team. As for Weeks being a disappointment, depends on how you look at it I guess. D. Young R. Weeks K. Sleeth T.Stauffer C.Lubanski R.Harvey Those are the top 6 picks in the 2003 draft and so far Weeks has been the best of the bunch. N.Markakis, P.Maholm, J.Danks were the next 3 and they obviously look like better bets atm but no reason Weeks can't end up being more valuable than Maholm and Danks has been proven yet. It wasn't a great draft class.
  17. Oh I wasn't calling for a PH of Nelson, not blaming Sveum or anything, I just wish it had been Nelson up to bat. Lidge is much better vs righties than lefties and Nelson has a better approach at the plate than Hart.
  18. I kinda wish we had Brad Nelson up here but maybe Hart will wake up.
  19. After such a nice at bat it sucks to strike out on ball 4.
  20. Man without that error we are up 1-0, so frustrating. (I know the game plays out differently but still bah)
  21. Gonna assume that is 2 runs scored with Weeks or Durham out there.
  22. I would expect this to be the case since it is a righty. Question is what we do the next 2 games against lefties. Hall has looked useless and Weeks tends to make his errors in the worst situations.
  23. Parra has the stuff to be a starter, he just wore down since he hasn't even pitched a full season in the minors before.
  24. I really doubt that happens. Maybe if he were right handed but it is rare enough to go starter to RP with that kind of stuff and even more rare to go closer as a LH.
