  1. I hate, hate, hate, hate that call by Yost. Bunting with 2 strikes is just silly.
  2. I don't even like listening to the game when they face Suppan. The guy is a below average pitcher except when he faces the Brewer's and becomes a Cy Young pitcher.
  3. The Cards lineup is not loaded, we lost because we did not pitch well and that is it. This Cardinal lineup is very average, they have 3 big mashers and more or less below average hitters in the other 5 slots.
  4. I blame Gross, if he had only hit a PH homer we would have won so its obviously all his fault we lost.
  5. I hope they find a way to keep Hall in the lineup tomorrow. Whether it be at 2B or CF(not SS though).
  6. Jenkins, Clark, Fielder and Miller all have been terrible this year. I find it hard to single one out over the others. Its early in the season, some guys just take a little longer to get it going than others.
  7. I'm gonna go with Gross. Its not easy coming off the bench and pinch hitting when you are never playing in the field and his hit was just huge in this game.
  8. Yeah if JDLR and Kolb both turn things around this year our bullpen becomes a real strength of the team. Now if only the offense can score us a run!
  9. I'm very uneasy seeing Kolb in with the game on the line, lets hope he proves me wrong.
  10. Quick question for those that are watching the game. I've noticed Koskie has made a few plays today, how does he look in the field? I know he was a gold glove calibre 3B for the Twins but most Blue Jay fans said he had really lost it defensively last year and had problems with the throws to 1B. I'm just curious if he looks great, good or just ok out there?
  11. Yeah it feels like last season was 3 years ago to me, part of the problem is the Packers stinking so much since I don't follow NFL, just the pack. I've been ready for baseball a lot longer than normal at this point.
  12. I think you need to be really careful when you look at Capuano. Look at his last 6 starts compared to the rest of his year and I think he gives a bit of a false indicator because they overworked him late.
  13. Shandler doesn't really use contact rate except for BA anymore. He even has a blurb in the book talking about how he used to be mistaken about how big an effect it has. There is a good correlation between contact rate and batting eye compared to batting average.
  14. All K's are not created equal so its not just an open and close case of which is better. A player like Wily Mo Pena who has high K's because he's completely outmatched is much different than a guy like Dunn who actually has good plate discipline but swings for the fences, You also have to keep in mind that some of a players SLG comes directly from swinging hard which will result in more K's. If Jenkins were to cut back on his swing, K only 75 times a year but lose most of his power because of it... is that really a good thing? I don't think it is.

  16. Its true of most pitchers in baseball. Getting good control is way more important than having good stuff.
  17. Yeah, Kolb has been terrible for a year and a half and a spring training now. I would think he's running out of chances here pretty quickly.
  18. Just to save anyone the time of trying, I filled that last spot.
  19. Top 3 teams from 5 leagues with the 16th team being the 4th place team with the best overall record, kind of like the wildcard. Sounds like aces to me! (of course I'm biased since I didn't get into the first 4 leagues, heh).
  20. doh, I didn't notice this started until today. I'll try to sign up tonight after work if its not all full (please tell me its not all full!)
  21. I'm interested but only if the draft happens to be on a weekday(I work weekends), autodraft teams are not worth it in a competitive league.
  22. I've always found Zips to be pretty poor at judging pitchers. Its much stronger for hitters than for pitchers. I agree that expecting Davis to be over a 4 era after the strides he made with his K rate is unreasonable. I think Hall will regress big time though, his year just screams fluke last year. Also when you look at Capuano you have to keep in mind his pickoff move, when you remove the pickoffs from his numbers his ERA goes down, the other issue with him is his stats took a steep decline at the end of the season. With another year under his belt IF he can stay strong the entire season I expect his numbers to improve naturally some.
  23. except, history disproves that. Every single year the players who have extra high H% (BABIP) almost universally have thier average dip the next season. The notion that luck has nothing to do with baseball stats is absurd, all this is doing is trying to identify who got good luck and who got bad luck. Same thing with ERA, the players with extremely low H% or higher strand rates almost universally see their ERA's inflate the next year, these stats weren't just created at random, they have been proven to have a real correlation to what happens in the game. The majority of players in baseball hover around 29-31% hit rate, there are a few exceptions like extreme slap hitters and guys who hit in extreme hitter parks like colorado but if you compare them to their career rates you get a pretty strong idea of whether a dip/raise in average is for real or just lucky.
  24. That BABIP is repeatable for Jenkins, its right around the same level he's been in his career outside of his injury shortened 2002 and his not full strength after injury 2004. Its still a tiny bit high but he is a 33/34 H% player when fully healthy. His eye was also worse last year than in 2003 which would be considered his 'prime year' so that is probably repeatable. His contact rate was the lowest its been in 4 years so that obviously is repeatable. His power stats are exactly the same as in 2003 so thats repeatable. His FB ratio was actually slightly lower than normal and his walk rate was lower than in 2003. His xBA was the same as in 2003. When you look at his indicators he's right in line with 2003 last season and assuming he doesnt' regress strongly which he shouldn't at just age 31 he should be able to repeat last year. 2004 looks like the abberation here not 2005.
  25. I've never been a big fan of ZiPs. It does an ok job of predicting established players but its usually pretty bad about judging rookies and second year players. I find Pecota is better at that but it of course costs money which is a big downside. That being said I'd be very surprised if Hardy and Weeks didn't beat their projections and I think its Capuano prediction is criminal. Yes his WHIP was a tad high last year but when you remove the guys picked off and sort of fudge the last month when all first full year pitchers tend to do poorly I think he's a 4 ERA pitcher, lower than 4 if he improves at all.
