  1. I agree. And I'd rather have an "unknown" or "unproven" prospect than a major league player known and proven to be mediocre or bad.
  2. He is due to be a FA after the season.
  3. After looking into it further it doesn't matter if he's on the DL, because he is eligible to come off at anytime. All the Padres have to do is take him off the DL and make a trade.
  4. Actually you can. Not sure where I read that, but I know I did.
  5. Thanks. It will be interesting to hear what you find out. I think acquiring Peavy would be a shrewd move by Melvin. He could help down the stretch (if he proves healthy) and for the next few years. His contract isn't as bad as some make it out to be either. At least I think it will turn out to be very affordable for a frontline starter over the next few years. Also you would think he would cost less than Halladay, and he has expressed an interest in playing in the Midwest. Peavy and Gallardo at the top of the rotation through 2013 would be awesome.
  6. How has he been given a clean bill of health? There is a suggestion that he may be done for the year. http://mlb.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20090716&content_id=5897680&vkey=news_sd&fext=.jsp&c_id=sd Sounds to me like he just has to get his arm ready.
  7. I think he could definitely help this season. It's just a matter of whether the Brewers could hang on until he's ready. The Padres haven't set a timetable for his return, but I would bet he's ready to go sometime in August. The big appeal for me is that he will more than likely cost less than Halladay, and he is signed for longer than Halladay (also younger). Peavy and Gallardo would make for a stellar 1-2 punch for the next few years.
  8. With all the hoopla surrounding Halladay, I was wondering what other pitcher could the Brewers acquire that could have a big impact during the stretch run and for next season. Maybe Jake Peavy? Now that Peavy has been given a clean bill of health, and is set to begin rehabbing, he might be an option to reconsider. Thoughts?
  9. The Brewers are not going to stake their postseason hopes on Chris Cody. You might give him a look after you've dropped out of contention, but not in the midst of trying to stay in a race. Rolling the dice on a 2 time 16 game winner seems the better option if the price is reasonable. If our big move is picking up Penny, then you will see Cody this year, because we will drop out of contention. Penny is not the same pitcher he used to be, and would not be a difference maker for the Brewers' postseason hopes.
  10. I'd like to see Chris Cody get a shot before we make a move like that.
  11. http://www.jsonline.com/blogs/sports/51144512.html Haudricourt quotes Melvin in regards to Halladay at the end of this blog. Doesn't seem like Melvin wants to meet their asking price, but of course he probably wouldn't say if he did.
  12. If that's the case, I would say forget it without even thinking twice. I would turn my focus to someone that would come at far less cost, but with potential upside for the rest of the season. And in my mind, Bedard would be that guy. Sure he has been injury prone, but you're gambling on his potential upside.
  13. Would the Jays take a swap of Hall and Rolen as part of the deal? It would save the Jays some money this season and about $3 million next season. I know it's probably a pipe dream.
  14. The Giants are loaded with pitching prospects and are feeling pressure to add a bat, so they could be a match.
  15. I guess I'd rather deal Hardy and Gamel, but I am afraid others are right when they say the Jays probably have little interest in Hardy. I really like Lawrie's raw power potential, and think he could be a star. I'm not so sure with Gamel. Don't get me wrong I think he will be a solid player, but just not a star player.
  16. Notice they said JJ Hardy could be available "in the right deal". Would the Brewers really prefer to have Escobar at SS right now despite already seemingly establishing themselves as buyers? I think they absolutely prefer to have Escobar at SS right now. They just can't tip their hand, otherwise Hardy has less value in a trade. If Hardy is not traded I would be surprised, and I think it would be a mistake not to trade him. His value continues to plummet, and if the Brewers keep him through the season he will be even less valuable in the offseason after he posts his .240 AVG with 17 HR's. I know the J.J. Hardy groupies will jump all over me for saying that, but I honestly believe this big second half everyone is expecting from him is not happening. Hardy does not have a great swing, teams have figured out how to pitch him, and he shows no signs of making any adjustments.
  17. I tend to agree. Those that live by the regression to the norm concept also die by this concept. When did Bill Hall regress to his norm? And don't bother with saying they are different situations. The point is not every player regresses to their previously established norm. Bill Hall's swing and plate discipline got progressively worse, and I am of the belief that the same thing has happened with Hardy. Does this mean Hardy can't get back on track? No. For the Brewers sake, I sure hope he does. I just wouldn't assume that a huge second half for Hardy is a foregone conclusion. Bad habits can be difficult to overcome midseason.
  18. I think the main thing is that either Cain or Schafer pans out in CF. Then you move Braun to right, and you can find somebody serviceable to play left in FA if none of those other guys pan out.
  19. I could see it happening. According to Bill Schroeder, Kendall did say he wants to play until he is the all-time HBP leader. I'm not sure how far away he is, but I think he would have to play next year for sure.
  20. Not necessarily though, as the money you don't need to pay Prince could go towards another FA or two to help fill the void for that 1 year (and they would obviously probably be around a few years after that as well). He's gonna be around $10-11,000,000 next year right? Its not the like the Brewers would just plan to replace him with Mike Rivera. If he isn't going to resign, I would still rather trade him for prospects, AND sign a FA to replace him. Aubrey Huff is a FA next year, and Victor Martinez is scheduled to be a FA the following year.
  21. If the Mariners make a deal surrounding Bedard and Hardy, I don't think that hurts their chances of contending. They haven't even had Bedard for much of the season, and Hardy is a significant uprgrade for them at SS. You're probably right about Hardy going to the Red Sox. The opportunity to make that deal probably has come and gone. I think the Dye deal would be the most difficult to make. If they were completely out of contention, it would be much easier. The White Sox have made every indication that they want to get younger, and you could probably entice them to part with the aging Dye for the right package. I disagree with you on Lopez. They seem to really want to get rid of him, and a player such as Iribarren wouldn't be a bad pickup since they would have him under team control for several years. I think they will probably wait until right before deadline to see what they can get for him
  22. I agree with that sentiment. That's why I think you would need to make another trade to supplement a Hardy and Cody(?) for Bedard and Morrow deal. If you could persuade the White Sox to part with Jermaine Dye (he would look great behind Fielder), then I think you would have a net gain in offense. You replace Hart and Hardy with Dye and Escobar.
  23. I agree. Morrow should be part of any deal sending Hardy to the Mariners. Hardy and Cody for Bedard and Morrow sounds good to me.
  24. The last three years Pierre has been a more effective base stealer, hovering around 75-80%, which is the percentage I believe Macha says he uses a cutoff line for steal attempts.
  25. I don't know... I would prefer to have Pierre single and steal second to lead off a game, than have Counsell or Kendall single to start a game and be virtually no threat to steal second. Also with having Pierre on first, I know my number two hitter is more likely to get fastballs to hit. That's my two cents worth from a coach's perspective.
