  1. Fair enough. Pierre's slugging percentage and therefore his OPS are largely criticized, but when you think about it, he turns many singles into doubles by stealing second base. It doesn't matter how you get to second base, does it?
  2. Bedard is certainly injury prone, but I think that's part of what makes him more attainable in a trade (along with his impending free agency). I guess I'd rather make a deal around Hardy and Bedard than pay the moon for Halladay. And you're not really giving away much of your future when you consider you have Escobar waiting in the wings, and you would get a comp. pick if Bedard leaves in FA.
  3. No, he really is not. You cannot just look at average. Pierre has obviously been better this year. But look at their OPS over the 3 before this year. Pierre has been .655, 685, and .717. Kendall has been .651, .610, and .709. Kendall is a better OBP guy than Pierre and they slug near the same so they are similar outside of Pierre's triples and steals, but considering one is a catcher and the other can barely play CF so would almost have to be a corner OF there is reason to say Kendall is better and more valuable.I guess people see what they want to see. In my mind their only real similarity is that neither of them hits for power. I think people like to draw comparisons because its simple and easy to do, but I think more often than not comparisons do not do one player or the other justice. Yes, like you said, Kendall is an OBP-guy, but Pierre is a better hitter at this stage in his career, and I find absolutely no comparison in 127 SB's over the last 2 1/2 years compared to 12 SB's. And yes, for his position, Kendall is a far superior defender. I never said Kendall was more or less valuable than Pierre. I just said I don't believe they are similar players.
  4. Let's see then... over the last three years: Pierre: .293 AVG, 64 SB (2007), .283 AVG, 40 SB (2008), .328 AVG, 23 SB (2009) Kendall: .242 AVG, 3 SB (2007), .246 AVG, 8 SB (2008), .233 AVG, 1 SB (2009) I think you're taking a lot of liberties with your comparison.
  5. I'm not in the "acquire Pierre camp", but that's a poor comparison IMO. Maybe if you said LH and a lot more speed than Kendall.
  6. My rationale for Hall to the Yankees is that they had interest in him this past offseason as a super utility player. Who knows if they will have that same interest next offseason, but can we bear another season with Hall on the roster? As far as the catching position goes, I could see bringing back Kendall for another year, or signing Brian Schneider and having him platoon with Salome (or Rivera for that matter). My basis for trading Hart for Dye is that the White Sox have expressed an interest in getting younger and they would have Hart under team control through 2011. I agree the Brewers may have to sweeten the pot for the White Sox. I think a low level prospect with Iribarren for Lopez might get the deal done. The D-Backs seem somewhat eager to get rid of Lopez. As far as dealing Green for Bedard I don't know if that's a bad deal if you believe Bedard gives the Brewers a shot this year. Maybe others can weigh in on it. Maybe Cody+? for Bedard would do it.
  7. Also I believe Rocco Baldelli is a free agent after this year. If he stays healthy this year, he might want and be ready for a full-time gig next year.
  8. Maybe a Gerut/Johnson platoon would work. Although there is a lot of hate for Gerut on this board. I just don't think he has been given much of a chance.
  9. Yeah, I'm having a hard time figuring out what value Jack Z would place on Bedard. If healthy though, I think Bedard could help the Brewers make a run this season and net them a compensation pick in next year's draft after he leaves in free agency.
  10. Also Victor Martinez is scheduled to be a free agent in 2011, so he might be a cheaper option than Prince as a free agent signee. Then you would have this lineup: 2011 Lineup SS Escobar CF Cain/Schafer (L) 1B Martinez (S) RF Braun 2B Lawrie 3B Gamel (L) LF Gillespie/Gindl (L) C Salome/Lucroy I'm bored today - can you tell? I'm responding to my own posts.
  11. Another 2011 Lineup - (if we can't work out a deal with Fielder and have to trade him during the season next year) 2B Prince (no not Fielder - Josh Prince) SS Escobar 3B Gamel (L) RF Braun 1B Lawrie CF Cain/Schafer (L) LF Gillespie/Gindl (L) C Salome/Lucroy
  12. Another thought would be to include Hardy in the deal to Seattle if they were to include Morrow.
  13. What would you do before the trade deadline and in the future? Here's what I would do: Before the Trade Deadline Trade Taylor Green and Chris Cody to Seattle for Erik Bedard (I'm not very good with values of prospects, so I'm sure someone will let me know if this is out of line) Trade Corey Hart to Chicago (AL) for Jermaine Dye Trade Hernan Iribarren to Arizona for Felipe Lopez In the Offseason Sign Prince Fielder to a long-term deal Pick up Jermaine Dye's option Trade J.J. Hardy and Evan Anundsen to Boston for Clay Buchholz Trade Bill Hall to the Yankees for ANYTHING Let Jason Kendall, Felipe Lopez, Mike Cameron, Erik Bedard and Braden Looper walk in FA Sign Reed Johnson 2010-2011 Offseason Trade Rickie Weeks for prospects Let Jermain Dye, Dave Bush, and Jeff Suppan walk in FA 2009 Lineup 2B Lopez (S)/Counsell (L) SS Hardy LF Braun 1B Fielder (L) RF Dye 3B Gamel (L)/McGehee CF Cameron C Kendall 2009 Rotation Gallardo Bedard (L) Bush Looper Suppan/Parra (L) 2010 Lineup 2B Weeks CF Johnson LF Braun 1B Fielder (L) RF Dye 3B Gamel (L) C Salome/Lucroy SS Escobar 2010 Rotation Gallardo Bush Buchholz Parra (L) Suppan 2011 Lineup SS Escobar CF Cain/Schafer (L) RF Braun 1B Fielder (L) 2B Lawrie 3B Gamel (L) LF Gillespie/Gindl (L) C Salome/Lucroy 2011 Rotation Gallardo Buchholz Parra (L) Arnett Braddock (L), Peralta, Scarpetta, Rogers, etc.
  14. I see your point. I guess when I think of streaky, I think of it in the traditional sense of getting hits (i.e. hittiing streaks).
  15. On the other hand, you could use your own argument against you. A guy that consistently puts the ball into play is going to be more likely to be immune to bad streaks, because luck would dictate that some of those balls put into play are going to end up a being a hit. Also Fielder hitting .100 for a week regardless of walks would be a bad streak.
  16. I guess I'm looking for guys that don't go more than a day without getting a hit. At least that's my attempt at quantifying streaky.
  17. Checking game logs I found no regular starter on the Brewers who has done what Pierre has done as far as only having consecutive games (with 3 or more at bats) without a hit twice. Kendall - 4 times Fielder - 5 times Counsell - 3 times Hardy - 6 times (including his big 0-fer stretch) Braun - 6 times Cameron - 9 times Hart - 4 times If you were to include McGehee he has only done it once. Once again, I don't really care for Pierre, but I don't think he is all that streaky.
  18. I'm confused as to how you think he provided anything to say he stunk. Also, I would say I provided some pretty good information to say he hasn't been streaky. Only twice has he gone two games in a row without getting a hit. I haven't checked, but how many Brewers players have done that this year. I doubt many, if any. If batting .264 with a .319 OBP for a month stinks, then everyone on the Brewers stinks outside of a few guys. If that's the case we might as well blow the whole team up and start over from scratch. Pierre's numbers in June were not good, but nothing to indicate that he is overly streaky. Also I hate that I'm defending Pierre at all, but I just don't think he is any more streaky than the average player, if not less streaky.
  19. A quick check of Pierre's stats this season: 55 games where he had 3 ab's or more In 12 of those 55 games Pierre failed to get a hit 2 times he had consecutive games without a hit (out of those 55 games) 25 multi-hit games Even though I wouldn't advocate going after him because he has a big contract and is a liability defensively, I would have to say he is not streaky in a bad sense and acutally would be a decent guy to have at the top of our order. One caveat: I would trade Bill Hall for him in a heartbeat. Not that the Dodgers are likely to want anything to do with Bill Hall.
  20. I wouldn't necessarily argue that Pierre isn't streaky because he's not really that good of a hitter, but I would argue with the notion that putting the ball in play makes you more streaky. I think the hitters that are the least streaky are the ones who put the ball in play and do not strike out much. Not saying that I couldn't be wrong, because maybe that's just my perception. Maybe someone has statistical data to back up the idea or refute the idea. If not, I think it would be interesting research. Although, how do you define "streaky"?
  21. I would have to say no to Escobar for Bailey. I am strongly against trading a young premier position player for a young premier pitching prospect. Pitching prospects are far more unpredictable than a position player prospect. Now trading Hardy for a pitching prospect would be a different story. Yes, he is still young, but he is also much closer to free agency. My feeling is if you are going to trade Escobar (which I don't want the Brewers to), you better get a proven commodity such as Roy Halladay. Also I wouldn't want to trade Escobar or probably Hardy for that matter within the division.
  22. My only question would be: What kind of message would it send to the players (including potential future FA's) and fans if the Brewers dumped Hoffman for prosepects right now?
  23. The Dodgers would be fools to part with Billingsley or Kershaw to get Halladay... enough said.
  24. Jermaine Dye please. I would love to see him batting behind Fielder.
  25. I've been all for this move for awhile. I would even be okay with parting with a lower level pitching prospect to get the deal done if Boston isn't inclined to deal Buchholz. I think Clay would be able to step in and help out right away, and as Messiah indicated he would not mortgage the future.
