  1. Win values... don't really care about them. They might have statistical significance, but not so much practical significance. No statistic can account for all the intricacies of the game of baseball, and trust me I love stats as much as the next guy. I still believe the Brewers would have lost more games without Fielder than they would have without Hardy, and I'm sure there a lot of people that would feel the same way.
  2. Best player? Really? I guess it depends on how you want to quantify best player. I'm not buying though. I think losing Braun or Fielder last year would have hurt the Brewers far more than losing Hardy. Also I'd settle for a solid #2 or #3 pitcher, which we don't seem to have right now. I really liked the Buchholz idea, but I'm sure that's no longer an option. I think the Red Sox have probably moved passed their flirtation with picking up Hardy.
  3. I'm fully convinced Hardy has already plateaued as a hitter. His swing is not very good (hand position is too low and he wraps his bat when he starts his swing). I used to be okay with his swing, but the more I watch him, the more I can't stand to watch him. He has to have his timing down perfectly to be successful, which is why I think he is prone to such hot and cold streaks. Remember Jenkins: not the same issues with his swing, but he he also had to have his timing down perfectly. I believe Hardy will never be a consistent hitter unless he makes some adjustments, and he doesn't strike me as the type to make many adjustments. In fact, he seems to be awfully stubborn if you consider his unwillingness to play anywhere but shortstop. I know that was a long rant on Hardy, but the long story short: trade Hardy for pitching while he has decent value, and bring Escobar up. Hardy is not really all that much to replace... at least as far as making a difference in wins and losses compared to Escobar playing shortstop everyday with Counsell spelling him occasionally. I guess I can live somewhat with Escobar struggling offensively, but I can no longer live with Hardy struggling offensively. Melvin needs to man up and trade Hardy and a couple second-tier prospects for a solid starting pitcher (and yes preferably somebody we control for a couple of years or more).
  4. Can't field or run either. Sadly, Gerut has more value right now.
  5. Two players that I think would help give the Brewers a chance this year would be Erik Bedard and Jermaine Dye. Bedard fills a role as a legit top of the rotation lefthanded starter, and Dye gives you a solid righthanded bat to protect Fielder. Of course, it all depends on how much you have to give up to get them. And put me on record as saying Hardy and Hart are very much expendable. Yes, their bats can be replaced.
  6. I say no to Cliff Lee if it means parting with Escobar. I think he's the SS of the future for the Brewers as I don't see us re-signing Hardy.
  7. It just seems that the Giants might think Sanchez has far more value than he really does. We might be thinking Hardy+prospect for Cain, and the Giants would probably come back with Hardy for Sanchez. I definitely think we can do better than that for Hardy.
  8. I don't know... if Buchholz didn't live up to his potential, the JJ Hardy groupies would be calling for Melvin's head. Heck they probably would anyway (if he traded him).
  9. You might be right, but I can still hold out hope. The Red Sox clearly don't have a spot for Buchholz as they already are going to have to figure out how to get Smoltz into their rotation. I just don't think Melvin is willing to take the risk. It would be a move that if it backfired, could put his job on the line. Not many GM's have the guts to make those types of moves.
  10. Sanchez=Parra... maybe good in the future, but not right now.
  11. I prefer to go after Buchholz. I think he helps this team right now, and makes the front end of the rotation outstanding moving into the future. Imagine Gallardo and Buchholz anchoring the rotation for the next few years. I realize Buchholz hasn't done much in MLB so far, but I still think he would outperform everyone in the rotation outside of Gallardo right now. I realize it would probably cost Hardy+prospect(s), but I'm not so sure we can't replace Hardy's so-called offense like many seem to think. Yeah, I know he will get hot (and maybe he already has), but most hitters do at some point. Buchholz's numbers so far at AAA this year: Team League W L ERA G GS CG SHO SV IP H R ER HR BB SO GO/AO AVG PAW INT 5 0 1.90 12 11 1 1 0 71.0 42 16 15 7 17 65 1.35 .165
  12. http://images.yuku.com/image/pjpeg/3c735837cd1e43215fdc8ccf3183262a8525a3a.pjpg I'm beginning to like the thought of Clay Buchholz in a Brewer uniform more and more. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif
  13. Whoever decided to pitch around Mark "I struck out 1,000 times last year" Reynolds is complete moron. Seriously, I expect more intelligent decisions than that.
  14. Y. Escobar wasn't the piece holding up the Peavy deal it was the pitching prospects Atlanta didn't want to part with which was holding up the deal. What about Francoeur, and James for Hart and Dillard. The Brewers then could send Francoeur to the Royals for DeJesus and a relief pitcher thus allowing the Brewers to send Cameron for some pitching and either signing Dunn or Burrell. I want no part of Dejesus, and dont understand the love for him on this board. He is a slightly better version of Gwynn JR. Good speed, light arm and marginal stick. Ridiculous. Gwynn Jr. is not even in the same league as DeJesus. By virtually any measuring stick of offensive productivy, DeJesus would have been one of our best players last year.
  15. Both Zimmermans (Ryan and Jordan) and then some.
  16. I agree postseason is a pretty minor consideration when evaluating a player. Buddy Biancalana anyone? Braun's rookie year was significantly better than Longoria's, and we will see how Longoria's sophomore season goes. I think ultimately they are similar talents.
  17. The thing that baffles me about Hart is that he is such a smart baserunner, but he seems completely clueless at the plate sometimes.
  18. Lincecum's pitching style lends itself to him being able to have higher pitch counts. He's very mechanically sound (far more so than many veteran pitchers). He's uses his entire body to deliver the baseball, which greatly reduces stress on the arm. Many pitchers do not do this, and many pitching coaches do not even know how to teach this (or that they should be teaching this). I think it's sad how baseball clings to traditional thought in regards to pitch counts and pitching mechanics. There is far more to durability than innings pitched or pitch counts.
  19. I no longer have any respect for Albert Pujols. Good hitter, but a big-tme jerk. The only classless act that took place was Albert cussing Carlos out for showing excitement (which by the way was NOT directed at the Cardinals dugout). Albert Pujols great player, but classless human being.
  20. I was more making an observation than hoping for any type of saviour. I think we may see Rhodes or Guardado in uniform for the Brewers on Friday night. I'm not saying that's a good or a bad thing. Couldn't hurt to bring in another bullpen arm.
  21. Maybe this will convince Melvin to not stand pat as the trade deadline approaches tomorrow.
  22. No, I wouldn't count on that, but they can play good enough baseball to secure the wild card and maybe the division if they get hot enough.
  23. Really the only questions you need to ask yourself as a Brewers fan right now is: #1 Are the Brewers still capable of making the playoffs? #2 If the Brewers make the playoffs, can they get hot enough to make a run to the World Series? I would still answer yes to both of those questions even if the Brewers get swept by the Cubs. Look at the Rockies last year. Do you think last year at this time fans of the Rockies thought they would make it to the World Series? Just trying to provide an optimistic outlook besides saying "hey, there is plenty of baseball left".
  24. And I guess Zombrano has more meltdowns and explosions than wins in his career.... blindness I'm not sure what that has to do with anything... clueless.
