  1. I *almost* wish Mota hadn't done so well. All that did was extend his leash and guarantee that he's around longer.
  2. I suppose this is more Weeks related, but it was said because of this trade, so I'm going for it. I know Ned fervently defends his guys, but this just did not come out well: "He's going to get better," Yost said. "But he's never been a .300 hitter, ever. So who says he's underachieving? He is working his way up there. He's getting better in all phases of his game. For me, he has never underachieved because he has never achieved up here [in the Majors]."
  3. Yeah, he did that over and over with Turnbow, too. What did that prove?
  4. I can't watch *peeks through fingers like watching a horror movie* 2-0 count to start, spectacular!!!
  5. I'd like to point out that my mother just snorted and when I asked her what's going on she said "Well, I'm just trying to figure this out. We were in San Fran playing games that didn't matter as much and we had the lead and this guy never got in. Now we're in St. Louis for all the marbles and we're bringing the guy that hasn't been able to pitch for crap." Ned - my 57 year old mother knows enough to think this is a bad idea - why don't you?
  6. Wonder if the neighbors just heard me yell NOOOO when I looked up from the laptop and saw Mota was up in the pen?! What the heck is Ned thinking?
  7. Thanks for looking that up. I was told it was 2000. That was enough to keep me away and I guess I never really wanted to confirm how many calories I'd swallowed!
  8. Mallards fans eat beetles for free Duck Blind tickets (with photos) The Capital Times - 7/18/2008 6:49 am Would you eat a beetle for $30? Well, as many as 250 Madison Mallards fans did Thursday night. The Mallards hosted Beetle Eating Night at the Duck Pond at Warner Park, in which the first 250 people to eat a dead beetle received a free ticket to the ballpark's all-you-can-eat-and-drink Duck Blind party deck -- a $30 value. http://www.madison.com/tct/sports/296765 for pictures
  9. Once I found out that ONE Krispy Kreme donut carried your whole day's recommended daily amount of calories, I couldn't eat another! I think it's win-win.
  10. Announced by Brian and Bill on the postgame show. Said they got the info via text message. edit: ESPN.com article http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=3497321 Says for Steve Hammond and Darren Ford EDIT: Fixed Link, updated title. -PF
  11. I tried ordering them over the phone and was told it wasn't possible. I also tried to go to the stadium and purchase more than a pair and was told I'd need to have IDs for everyone in the group. Conversely, I bought 4th of July tickets via that promotion, bought 6 at the stadium and had no problem. This is one of those things that I've found it totally depends on which ticket rep you get. I think it's a promotion that they don't explain very well to their salespeople and so they just don't have any clue. If you don't get the answer you think you should, I'd ask them to check, since I've gotten different answers every time I've done it.
  12. I can't get over the mental block with Jack in the Box and the stories of findings fingers, etc .. in their food in the late 80s/early 90s. I just CANNOT eat there.
  13. There was one CiCi's and one Dairy Queen in New Orleans and they were in the same strip mall across the street from the Zephyr's stadium (AAA ball). So we'd go to CiCi's for dinner, get something from DQ and then go see the Zephyr's on Thursday nights for Thirsty Thursdays with $1 beers. Good times. I had Baja Fresh in DC last summer and LOVED the salsa bar. What a great idea! Lastly, I feel like I saw that same CVS coming soon in Madison and I want to say it was on Park between campus and the beltline, but I'm not sure!
  14. There's a place in the South called Raising Cane's that serves nothing but chicken fingers and it's ABSOLUTELY SPECTACULAR. It started at LSU and has since spread. There are a few in New Orleans now and a quick look at their site says they're in Minneapolis, amongst other places - mostly college towns. They serve the fingers with this amazing dipping sauce, a piece of Texas Toast and fries. Seriously, I'm craving it hard-core.
  15. I've made use of the Trading Post fairly frequently and have had nothing but positive experiences. I love that there is such trust around here. I purchased tickets from another user this week and he sent me the tickets before I sent the payment. No problems, no questions. A family member expressed disbelief that the other member would just send them out and I said "Well, it's BrewerFan" as though that explained it all. I have no qualms making transactions here and have given away tickets without a second thought. I'm glad we have that community and I'm thankful that the Mods are doing things to keep it that way.
  16. Ok, that's crazy. It would be unheard of if he went to like Russia or Greece (or some similar "2nd tier" Champions League team) but Uzbekistan??? Seriously, they're probably offering more money, but he was already making A LOT of money. Is twice A LOT of money worth moving to Uzbekistan and dominating the league?
  17. Glad I could help. I loved my small school and the emphasis on more than classroom learning. There were times where I hated that it was a small campus and everyone seemed to know one another, but at the same time, it was great knowing everyone, if that makes sense. I could go out and just know there would people friends no matter where I went.
  18. Seriously, this was the best thing I heard all month. I lived in Louisiana for 6 years and would drive between Milwaukee and New Orleans a few times a year. This was a few years ago, so we didn't yet have Steak N Shake in Milwaukee. When I was heading South, my first stop for food would be the Steak N Shake near St. Louis and my second would be the first Sonic I'd come across. Heading North, I'd get my last Sonic fix and then look forward to St. Louis for my Steak N Shake. I absolutely love Sonic's Cheesefries. They also do the Frito Chili Pie thing, which I know a lot of people love. They have these sandwiches on Texas Toast - I love the chicken one. So tasty and so awful for you, I'm sure. Also, if I could drink nothing but Strawberry Limeade for the rest of my life, I'd be extremely happy. I think it's just mean that they have these commercials here for 99 cent drinks during "happy hour." I'd be there every day. Ok, crazy rant finished.
  19. I didn't go to Marquette, but another Jesuit school and I have to say that I completely did not understand what being at Jesuit school meant. This is not at all meant as a disparaging Marquette/Loyola/Jesuits/Catholicism. I actually ended up really liking the whole experience and learned a lot and got super involved in service because of Loyola's Jesuit teachings, but to start out on campus as someone who didn't have any experience with it, it was a little overwhelming. If you're not from a Jesuit HS, I think you'll find it very different to begin with. I went to a public high school and I was completely not prepared for the Jesuit/religion thing to come across so strongly. Maybe that was naive of me. I had never been in a place where so many young people were so strongly religious. Don't get me wrong, it certainly wasn't like I was getting hit across the head with religion every moment of every day, but the basic Jesuit teachings like Ad Majorem Dei Glorium, education of the whole person, and service come across in pretty much every on-campus activity. I'm worried that I'm going to turn people off by saying these things, but let me add that I am not highly religious, nor Catholic and I was at school for 4.5 years and never felt uncomfortable. I found the experience so wonderful that I considered joining the Jesuit Volunteer Corps. But I do wish that I had known these things before I stepped on campus because I found it very off-putting at first.
  20. My experience with sportswriting, too, is that the proofreaders often aren't "sports people." I know you'd think MLB.com would have the bestest and brightest, but those of us that are both word nerds and sports-minded don't come along too frequently. Papers/websites would prefer people who catch those kind of mistakes over people who aren't as sharp on that, but know their sports. They can learn, over time, what stats and details are supposed to look like, but you can't really teach how to be a copy editor. I often had people copyediting me that had less than no sports experience. They would have had no idea that the Brewers aren't the Tribe. Also, mistakes like this tend to happen when cutting and pasting is used. The theory is that "it was right before" and so they gloss right over it. Headline and sub-head and photo cutline writing is harder than you'd think. You don't want to have any white space, so whatever you write has to fit within set parameters and not be shorter. So my guess is that the sub-head they used is standard length and so they cut and paste and never paid any attention to the Tribe part.
  21. A lot of getting into Madison relative to other Wisconsinites can have to do with the region you're from/high school you attended. I went to a fairly high profile high school and the class president with a 3.7 got wait-listed. They're not going to let in the whole damn class and a lot of kids had above 4.0 and AP scores, so a lot of fully qualified kids didn't get it. They don't want 500 kids from Milwaukee's 3 or 4 top high schools. They want diversity.
  22. I think you're assuming it's done as a blog post would be and that is highly unlikely. It's simply NOTHING like posting or blogging. Just as a newspaper's website doesn't work that way, I would think the Brewers site is the same way. He definitely has editor(s). It's not opinion, so he can't just write it up and post it. They have to fact check and proofread to cover their butts legally. Clearly someone messed up here, but I doubt it's MCCalvy. That being said, the Brewers.com proofreader seems to have been napping for awhile. Last week during all the Vote for Hart the underline said "For AL MVP"
  23. That song makes me laugh every time I hear it. Two ABBA-ers got stuck in the background singing into a mic for 4 minutes going "TakeachanceTakeachanceTakeachance" . Good stuff
