    This may need to get moved somewhere else but I just wanted to take a second and say how much I appreciate this forum. I somethimes visit the Brewers board from MLB as well as the Cubs (more now just for the sheer thrill).The amount of trolling and nastiness there just grows the more the race heats up. I am just a man who loves the game, especially when it is played right. I guess the same goes for discussion about baseball. This forum has a lot of stats but it also has the most intelligent discussion I have seen of any board on the web except for a triathlete board I go to. (That is a lifestyle so the trolling and such would not have much of a place there anywhere). The sappy point I am trying to make is I want to thank the mods and the people that post here for a job well done. Now I need to do something manly to get the sappy need to hug someone out of my head.

    Stats are a wonderful way of predicting many outcomes in baseball. What they don't take into account is something that Ned has that no one on this board does either. (I am in no way disputing the value of said stats) He is side by side with his players. He knows, as does any manager, what is going on with a player on a day to day basis. Those things come into play when making a descision as well as match ups and numbers. I too would not have shed any tears had Yost been fired after the Boston series, but the team has been winning ever since and we are closing--not on the wildcard--but on the first place team. It seems to me if you credit Yost with the losses then you should give him credit for the wins. To do one and not the other seems a bit hypocritical imo. I was flabbergasted when Mota and then Gagne came in. Same holds true for when Torres hit, but it all worked and there have been many good arguments to the possible thinking behind it. Personally I don't care if Marge Schott is managing this team as long as we win.

    Why do so many say the Cards are not that good. Bottom line is any Tony LaRussa team is going to be good and a contender. This team also has a great catcher, first baseman and one heckuva an outfield. If you underestimate the Cardinals you set yourself up. The fact that they won the WS as a wildcard team is not a fluke, it is an extremly well managed well put together ball club. As a Brewers fan I can admire that team greatly and hope that we take notes from them. This is not a lucky team. They are a good team. Earlier this season when folks were calling for Yost's head I asked the question who would you replace him with. Tony would be my fantasy choice (because I know it would not happen) and when I mentioned that a few stated how they disliked him. He is, IMO one damn good manager. Now that I have that off my chest, Yost outmanaged him tonight. Sweet.

    I have never subscribed to the Insider because I doubt that they would have any story that isn't out on the web somewhere else anyway. If you particularly like a writer I would understand it though. Google him and I am sure you will find a lot of Josh out there. It is an awesome story and one I hope continues to be successful. Good luck to you in your "something" as well. "Somethings" can be pretty tough to get through.

    It is most likely a habit but it may also be a mild case of exercise induced asthma. With this asthma symptoms are more likely after exercise type activities, such as running the bases. I noticed him doing it last year and only after he runs, which leads me to the possibility of the ailment.

    I feel really, really good about this team going down the stretch.     Who is likely to get sent down when Gagne and Choate are called up? I would have thought Bush a few weeks ago but the last two outings must have made that a bit tougher to pull the trigger on.

    Didn't Benny sign for less than what he could have received last time? Prince I see being out of reach (mostly due to the Boras factor) but as we have seen with Braun, it doesn't always come down to the allmighty dollar with every player.

    Wouldn't it be better to look at all playoff teams since the post season seems to be pretty much a crapshoot. The Red Sox seem to value OBP. Excellent point. I do remember the book stating that as well.

    Great stuff everyone, but what I am really looking for is this: Take the teams that have won, say, the last 3-4 WS. Would these be teams that would follow the Money Ball way of placing a value on a player? Or would they fall into the category of building a team based on putting fans in the seats based on name recognition? Power players? Great D? If this is still not clear what I am trying to get at I will be forced to admit to my wife that I am indeed--as she points out often--pretty poor at comunicating. Regardless I thank you all for your input.

    The fact that this team hasn't met fan expectations in the past 20+ years better not have any effect on current management. The only thing they can change is the present and beyond.     I am referring to the philosophy of--and for right or wrong this is what I got out of the book--of putting more weight on certain stats than the old school way of scouting and drafting. For example when he drafted the catcher who didn't have a "baseball body". I believe a lot of that had to do with his approach at the plate (walking as you pointed out). I am just trying to find out from the people that put a lot of passion and energy into stats how that type of thinking has played out over the last few years, esp in terms of WS winners...hopefully that makes sense.

    I read Money Ball and loved it--not so much for the stat stuff, though it was interesting--but for the behind the scenes it gave. I have seen a lot of really deep and well researched analysis here and to be honest it usually loses me at some point. My question--as I hate looking all this stuff up--is what have the A's done since BB initiated his philosophy and how many of the teams that have won it all since the book would have rosters he would have put together stat-wise?

    One that I don't hate but it is Ironic? May be the wrong word for it. It is the Miller commercial where the guy goes to the sky box at the game and when no-one knows the score he takes back the beer. Good stuff except for his line where he talks about his favorite pitcher "getting lit up, take him out, take him out". Look through the glass, all the fans are cheering which would lead you to believe that he is in a visitors stadium. Then he goes out and happily joins all the fans as if they are on the same team. For a commercial that is about being "genuine about baseball" they should have got it right...or maybe I think too much.

    But the fact that there are additional choices means there is a noticeable difference in strategy. Strategy, any strategy (as evidenced on this board) adds to the thrill of the game. Yes, many times a pitcher may make an out, but he may also be called upon to bunt (another strategic move eliminated with the DH). Every once in a while the pitcher gets that crucial hit that he got a chance to get because he was shutting down the other team. How many times have we seen a pitcher do something like that and the crowd goes nuts. Having the pitcher hit adds a lot to the game. A DH dumbs it down IMO. Baseball is a game of strategy not just which team can hit the most home runs. The second guessing of a manager that happens so often here loses something--a lot or a little depending on your viewpoint--but it loses something none-the-less.

    For the record I still have a lot of faith in this team. It's Baseball and a long season and as has been proven time and time again anything can happen. We have talent and we can win!

    Yost wasn't pitching or fielding and this team has proven it can do both the past few weeks. Now they need to get it done with the bats. There was no glaring bad move by Yost in this. What he did made sense.
