  1. There's no way I would give a nickel to the collection of condescending, arrogant elitists who fancy themselves as above all other humanity in their ability to divine any truth related to baseball but... I'd guess Derrek Lee. It would be insurance for Gamel, he's at the end of his career and he wants more money than anyone will pay. That spells a Melvin guy to me. I know how he talks now about how Mat should have every chance to succeed, but it wasn't long ago that he used to respond that "there are people in the organization" that believe he should have an extended opportunity. Maybe Melvin will defer more money.
  2. Yeah, I'm not a big Aramis fan, but I expect a lot more than average offense. In a way maybe he'll be a good fit in that he probably won't want to play every day and Green (hopefully) can start a game here and there. It'll be interesting to see how his defense looks as he's had some great receivers over at first to handle his throws. All in all an interesting thread.
  3. I think he definitely has a lot of potential, but the comment describing him as backed into a corner with no room for error seems about right. I hope there are other story lines dominating if he starts out slowly. I remember him as having a hard time with up and in pitches. If I'm right, I wonder if he'll be seeing those from the get go. Honestly, the bit of surfer dude in his voice makes me laugh. Despite that he handles questions pretty well. I listened to a WSSP interview and it was like two old school marms hectoring a middle schooler incessantly. He handled them like routine grounders.
  4. Am I remembering correctly - didn't Melvin give his "I don't want to discuss that at this time" when they signed Aoki and he was asked about a trade? I interpret that as he's working on moving someone. I wish it was Morgan but my guess is it would be inventory item Gindl. Regardless, in a year when he's going to compete he said he doesn't want to use young players and C-Pat is a veteran and first man up in an emergency.
  5. Sheets and Yo were team members and fan favorites. I wouldn't describe Wolf as working out very well personally. Those one year contracts that you excluded include guys like Braden Looper and Doug Davis redux. He also loved Dave Bush. I remember when he had the stats staff do an analysis of their pitching signings and why they performed so poorly and the result was low velocity. Somehow its never that he's less than magnificent at his job.
  6. I vote Greinke. The question is what Melvin will do. A soft tosser with bad mechanics seems like someone he would overpay.
  7. Hunt looks like Sam Kinison - no? He doesn't seem into it, but JS is no doubt under financial pressure and given that Hunt is pulling a paycheck, got sent down. The MLB coverage is really weak as well.
  8. Don't blame Counsell for what goes on. I'd be shocked if the team didn't have a dead roster spot or two. I assumed when Kotsay was signed that he was pretty much guaranteed a spot. I wonder if Melvin signs guys like him because he has admired and followed them through their careers. Kotsay was a hotshot college player and a top draft pick. Its his chance to have a great player, even for a year. Unfortunately, the Gagnes don't always work out and there is no more "great" left.
  9. Classic Melvin speak: he hasn't called them and can't see a position at this time. His ego won't let him admit mistakes and in truth Yuni might not be the trainwreck he's made out as. Regardless, the Rangers would have to send a bunch of money and there wouldn't be much going back in the way of prospects. The trade deadline is when something might happen. I could see more prospects going for someone like Aybar too. Even that would require Melvin to admit a mistake. Has that ever happened? About as close as I can remember was him citing statistics on how bad the FA pitching was in the year he changed Suppan's life forever.
  10. "if I were in his shoes, I'd be open to anything." That seems like an odd comment. It makes you wonder if there is some friction somewhere. If Macha said those exact words I can imagine the furor. Maybe I'm reading things wrong, but I would be absolutely shocked if Cruz makes the lineup even if he has an absolutely great Spring. His job is emergency backup if Yuni breaks a leg and Melvin can't trade for anyone. "Money mentioned Gamel is doing the same thing wrong over and over again." I'll leave it to more diligent posters like TLB to dig around the archives, but my recollection of Money in an audio interview was that Mat would use proper mechanics several times in a row and then blow a play. I guess you could call that doing it wrong over and over, but I think its different than what Money described.
  11. Its debatable whether its a good contract - I'll pass on defining "fair" - but those qualifiers, whether he stays healthy and maintains a high level of performance, are huge. Even if Farris could play SS, Melvin would never do it. Heck, I doubt Cruz ever plays for the team. Melvin will send prospects for a year or two of some guy already in the league before he does that. If Farris wasn't a "rising star," then the FO has been lying non-stop and are even willing to screw with a guy by bringing him to Milwaukee just to manipulate a contract negotiation. He's doomed to not having enough value to get anything good in a trade but too good to let go and not have an emergency backup. The money could go toward, you know, extending someone like Greinke. What i wonder is what exactly did the Brewers get for all that negotiating? Was Weeks asking for 6/85 or something?
  12. Way too much money and too long as well. This could be Billy Hall contract version II. Bringing Farris to the Winter Warmup as a "rising star" was probably a charade from day one.
  13. I put a link to Martin Prado's minor league statistics in an earlier post. His MLB stats enhance my point. The fact that he is not being DFAd is because he isn't OPSing .600. Farris and Prado are about as similar as Irribarren and Farris. You want to use a comparison to Irribarren as a starting point and that is why I put in the link to the logical fallacy. Maybe they're sending Farris to AFL to fill a positional requirement, but that seems far fetched.

  15. You can compare him to someone who didn't do well, but you could also compare him to someone who did well. I don't hear a lot of people saying that the Braves should DFA Martin Prado. Do you think its stupid to send him to the Arizona Fall League? That doesn't make much sense wasting it on someone who isn't very good.

  17. You didn't bother to read the link I provided. Once again you begin by making declarations. Then you invent something you want to ascribe to me. Personally, I find straw man arguments insulting. And who is everyone? You and one other poster say the same things over and over and over and over and over and over and over. You and he aren't everyone. The idea that Hart and Braun are "brutal" defensively is laughable.
  18. Having a good or bad UZR doesn't mean someone is good or bad defensively. I want to meet the Brewers games "video scout" who looks at a monitor and makes judgements, many which can't be made by looking at a monitor. I wonder if he knows more about Doritos flavors than what parallax is. The pitching staff combines mightily to allowing runs. How many rockets do they give up? So far this year they've walked an astonishing 511 batters, given up 155 HRs and thrown 60 wild pitches, at least according to the official scorer. The team losing, favorite players not getting special treatment and disliked players remaining is fertile ground for confirmation bias. I think one of the most interesting aspects is that someone can be shown that something is false, but it doesn't take away the belief. When Braun makes an imperfect throw and the result is a play that essentially loses the game, the immediate judgements were how AWFUL he is despite the fact that the video contradicted the claims made. At least in the IGT and chat, nobody started kvetching that Lucroy botched the play severly or that Braddock failed or that Casey might have cut the ball off other than one poster who said that the play should not happen without discussing blame. Declaring Braun, Hart, McGehee and Fielder AWFUL or HORRIBLE doesn't make it so no matter how many times its repeated.
  19. Here are recent rule V drafts. Its a real test of knowledge of rosters and teams to know some of the names. Pitching dominates. Is my recollection correct that Chris Cody is very soft tosser and probably wouldn't be viewed as a major leaguer? There is the odd position player in there. You never know when a team like the Padres will pick up an Everth Cabrera. I could see a team like the Pirates taking a shot on Katin and risking the 50K. About the only thing I can remember the org saying about him was Melvin once referring to him as "intriguing" when asked. I get the impression that they like both Taylor and Farris although that's not based on much. Farris reminds me a bit of Martin Prado.

  21. Yes, Ken Macha's clubhouse is where prospects go to die.
  22. I didn't say they had to have ROY seasons. I said they could be learning basics of the game in the minors rather than in games. Remember this discussion started because Lucroy and Braddock made a bunch of fundamental mistakes. There are positives and negatives to both choices. Is it fun to watch them? Sure.
  23. Sure, but they're also learning things here that they should have learned in the minors. They're having success here because they're talented.
  24. I don't get the thing with complaining about Braun. He made an almost textbook throw to the plate. He definitely wasn't flat footed. Macha was a horrible manager for not using Gamel as a PH in the 7th and then for not using Counsell in the 9th. If he used Counsell rather than Kottaras, somebody would have declared him stupid and incompetent. The truth is that Braddock made a really bad pitch and botched the back up. Lucroy is learning here what he should be learning in AAA. He did multiple things wrong in the critical play. Really both of them probably should be in AAA along with Cain.
  25. Just saw the replay. It was a one hopper right at the plate. Looked like simple, proper footwork to me as well. What did he do wrong?
