  1. You were talking about a "major overhaul." If the team makes a major overhaul, they are going to have to rebuild in my estimation. Its a pretty natural extrapolation to trade key players who won't be around when the team isn't competitive. I don't think a major overhaul is a good idea, but if they do it, they should do it, not flip a marquee player in the hope you'll be better in a couple years.
  2. TooLive, we're talking chatting on a forum here. Melvin sure seems like he's committed to Gamel at 3rd. At least according to Ash/Melvin they've been assured by Money and Iorg (roving infield guy right?) that he can stick. If they wanted him to be an outfielder, they would be working him there. Despite what some people think, its not automatic to move out there and do well. They are doing that despite the noise by self-appointed experts who declare that its impossible or that he should move. I'd add that some of those experts declared that he had a weak arm and that meant he couldn't play RF. Does anyone think that arm is weak? McGehee has done really well in a partial season of at bats. He's got a good glove and versatility, but he's older and has a balky knee - that's not going to be a big trade chip. He's a perfect bench guy who can get some starts at 3rd, 2nd, could play 1st although that is never needed and can be the emergency catcher for the manager's psyche to use a PH as well as PH himself. Plus he seems well liked by the players and coaches. That's a lot of good stuff for league minimum, but I'd be shocked if they made him the starter at 3rd unless Gamel has a really bad year.
  3. Not really. Blowing up the roster isn't going to produce a contender soon. How many years of rebuilding do you think it will take? If it isn't in the next few, then why keep players while you're not contending, to sell tickets?
  4. That Sacramento team has been hitting. My expectations aren't high for Suppan in that one.
  5. Is Gerut under contract next year? If he isn't I don't think he'll be back. I guess people can dream, but why Casey in the outfield? I think both Iribarren and Heether become minor league free agents next year. I could see one or both sticking if they do really well in ST. Then again, rookies on the bench wasn't exactly a happy experience this year. Corrections always welcome.
  6. Any player who wants his team to be competitive is trying to be a GM? Braun could net some good pitching. Doesn't that mean we should trade him along with the majority of the roster? Heck as long as we are going Pirates, why not flip Gallardo as he won't be around when the team is competitive and since there are probably going to be a few years of low attendance, his arby years might be too expensive. Or we could keep most of the roster. Make a trade or two. Sign a FA or two.
  7. TooLive, I agree with everything else you said and I think that Gamel can stick at 3rd defensively. Is that what you mean by that quote?
  8. I see the Nashville opponent Sacramento had Brett Wallace who is hitting a little under .300. He had a HR tonight. I'm glad he won't be around for the next half dozen or so years.
  9. I'd take Kendall. Pudge doesn't block balls well, throw well, receive throws well. He's pretty much a hacker at the plate as well.
  10. The irony is that Hardy's reputation as a poor defender comes from defensive metrics. At one time out of zone plays or "OOZ" weren't included and Hardy rated poorly. When the Brewers' propensity to play outside of the clumsy, crude zones was pointed out, the response was typically that they were "advanced metrics" and were excellent, ergo he wasn't very good. Later when the various metrics got a little better, Hardy rated as excellent - indeed one of the best. Now the argument is made that because of the shifts, the metrics are distorted and he really isn't very good. Its a classic example of using data to support an emotion.
  11. Someone would pick him up so they can bring him to ST next year. If they don't then he can go wherever he wants.
  12. Actually it doesn't. Even if it were reliable, the sample size is tiny. The very people who created it questioned whether 3 seasons was an adequate sample.
  13. Having a low UZR rating doesn't mean his defense has been bad. It would be crazy for the org to decide now to work Gamel out in RF.
  14. I wish they were bringing up Jason Bourgeois. What's Hall going to do if he can't do well, go back down? Now its be a hero or... I don't know. If he kept raking in the minors some team might give him a try and pay at least some of his salary above the minimum.
  15. I don't know. Z and DM have the advantage of being able to discuss the entire situation openly and honestly without worrying about leaks or BSing. The team has a lot of quality prospects who aren't hyped. I'm hoping, perhaps irrationally, that Z can put together a deal that includes a lot of nice prospects due to his knowledge of the system without taking premium guys.
  16. But do you get to a WS without some of the hitting? Is it worth it to go for a WS and empty the farm? Seems a lot of people think so, but I don't. Top of the rotation starters are hard to come by. Analysis that looks at it in retrospect has the luxury of seeing who performed well and who didn't.
  17. I don't think cumulative stats tell the McClung story well. He can be quite good or bad. I'm sure the staff wonders what they'll get. He hasn't done well in a while though. Those starts were brutal.
  18. Well, I don't unless they do it too much, but absolutely lots of people think it is a big reason for the Brewers losses. Its right up there with lineup construction as oft cited criticism of any and all managers. I don't see much of it on this forum, but do you listen to any sports talk radio or poke around on other forums and blogs? "Small ball" is the usual phrase. I'd even like to see more butcher boy plays by the pitchers.
  19. "fetch us good pitching" Washburn? I dunno. He could be really ordinary. Maybe that's not bad. Bedard has as many derogatory nicknames as Benny had. "Glassman" is the one I see a lot. He's just coming off the DL. We could lose Hardy for nothing. If both guys performed well, it would be a decent trade. That's a big if.
  20. I wouldn't call that mediocre. I'd say the sample of regular playing time is a lot better indicator than rookie ball stats or a bunch of cups of coffee in the majors. I'm not really knocking JG - he is having a hard time with PHing which isn't unusual, but I don't buy the notion that Gwynn is an awful baseball player. Padres fans are also pretty positive about TG's defense.
  21. Burns reminds me somewhat of Randy Wells. He's not going to be as good as Bush when he is doing really well, but he's not going to be as bad as Bush a lot of the time as well. Listening to Haudricourt when Homer is screaming for DiFelice to start, it sounds like the powers that be are determined to not do that, but I do wonder how he'd do. He's supposedly been working on a pitch just for LHers and his inability with LHers and his value in the bullpen are why he isn't given a shot. Also, Homer sounds just like grandpa Simpson when he starts yelling.
  22. TG in San Diego .300/.375/.769 and in 192 PAs he's GDP once. JG in Milwaukee .103/.163/.265 and in 43 PAs he's GDP 3 times. I'd say one guy has been useful and one useless.
  23. Nobody I have ever read or heard has said anything like this. I'd argue the converse is true. Again, Rivera isn't going to hit much better than Kendall and the defense will be worse. Using his 3 year average reminds me how the people who hated Gwynn would cite an average of his minor league stats that included his rookie ball and A ball stats. And FWIW, Parra typically starts a game relying on a lot of fastballs. That's typical. Some how now his ability to throw strikes is dependent on the catcher.
  24. I'd say that there is almost no chance that Haudricourt in any way caused or created an argument or fight between Braun and Melvin. I don't even think he was the js reporter who was working the day that Braun made his latest comment that caused controversy. I don't read Hunt, but if the columnist said things you wrote, I'd disagree with some of them. I wouldn't therefore conclude that the paper was bad.
  25. He's hitting .269 with a .356 OBP for June and July. Rivera would probably hit about that average or lower with a lower OBP and a better slugging. You'll get more passed balls, fewer grounders fielded, fewer pitches per plate appearance. There are nuances in framing pitches, working the umps and a myriad other things that catchers do that I would guess that Kendall is pretty good at.
