  1. McCalvy is saying on his blog that Iribarren still has an option left.
  2. Does this exist? I apologize if it does. The padlock means no more posting. The pushpin means the thread is pinned to the top. The baseball means new comments and clicking it takes you to the first new comment - nice. What are the meanings of the two way arrow looking thing and the exclamation point?
  3. There is the starting 8 plus Counsell and Rivera plus 12 pitchers. I don't have any strong sense of what will happen with pitching other than they'll probably keep a potential mid-season starter with an option like Green in AAA to keep him ready to go and working on things. That leaves 3 spots. Duffy sounds like he's leading the consideration for one spot. Nelson, Iribarren and Gwynn are all out of options (correct?), so they might have a bit of an edge over other choices. Gwynn sounds like he might have surgery. I don't know if that gives the team a way to stash him away, but I don't think he has a chance to be on the opening day 25. Maybe they can put him on the 25, but on the DL though. I don't think they'll keep better prospects on the bench rather than playing regularly, so I'd guess no Gamel, Esco, LoCain or Angel. That leaves Hernan, Big Brad, Trot who sounds like he's scuffling, and Casey McGehee. Who am I forgetting? I guess if I had to call it, I'd say Brad and Casey get the last two spots.
  4. Kei Igawa - one additional note: his salary isn't included in the "payroll" number because he isn't on the 40 man roster. Same with CC's 9 million dollar bonus. So when people make bold statements about Yankee payroll it is usually a "sort of."
  5. He says those are two choices among others. The Brewers were on his list of possible teams not long ago.
  6. I think the premise is correct. When Looper was signed, Melvin talked about how they had evaluated who might be available and what they would cost, so they must have a list. I think the Tigers could do okay. They had one of those everything goes wrong seasons last year and if they are competitive, I'll bet they sell a lot of tickets. What about San Diego? It seems like beyond going into full rebuild mode, there has been some ugly news things like Giles smacking his ex. I think Peavy's contract looks scary for a team like the Brewers, it must look pretty unpleasant for them. I guess after Peavy and Giles there isn't much to cut loose.
  7. The numbers from that MLE calculator don't really mean anything. I doubt its anything other than the difference of a minors average versus a majors average. Gwynn could hit .100 or bump up his average by 30 or 40 points. I've heard his defense is excellent as well.
  8. And there is a significant chance that Weeks would never perform well as a center fielder.
  9. liveforoctober, sometimes you can get it to work by switching back and forth to another channel. It seems to work for me if I watch the other channel for a couple minutes. You can also cut the power to your box and restart it. Or change out the box.
  10. Front line starter would have been nice, but as has been said, not many choices. Peavy's contract is scary. Lowe was probably undoable and not cheap either. It'll be interesting to see if a quality starter, maybe a #2 or #3 can be had without giving up premium prospects as the year progresses. Probably not, but the economy may create opportunities.
  11. Come on, you're not going to claim the mantle of objectivity are you? You don't look for numbers to support your predetermined arguments? Even taking old Gwynn numbers its easy to make an argument that the money would be better spent elsewhere.
  12. Ah, good point - you're ignoring his Spring Training numbers. VWL numbers have no correlation? Where is the study to support that or even the underlying reasoning? How about A ball numbers or recovering from injury numbers?
  13. Why is it good when you find numbers to advocate for your position and not when I use the most recent ones to argue for mine?
  14. People find numbers to support their arguments. I have no idea why you gave the estimates for value of strikeouts and walks that are used in estimates of player value. Last I checked, strikeouts were awfully close to being a guaranteed out. And if you're talking about Cam's projected runs which is a crapshoot estimate anyway, you should talk about the loss of runs from not spending the money elsewhere. Tony Gwynn .339/.391/.403 in VWL play. Hernan Iribarren .362/.433/.586.
  15. Arguments I find unpersuasive: People who are bothered by strikeouts ignore all else - I sure don't and he seems lost at the plate sometimes. He's cheap for a free agent - so what? The team needs a couple starters, a 3d baseman and a reliever or two. If we get "bargains" at free agent, the payroll will be stretched by 10s of millions of dollars. It won't happen, so liking Cameron means liking Bill Hall at 3d or who knows as a starting pitcher and heaven help us all as the 6th or 7th starter during the year as an injury fill-in. Middle relievers and closer? Who knows. Second could be upgraded as well. Somebody has to be on the bench. He's a gold glove caliber defender - No he's not. Above average to very good and even excellent in some aspects, but comparing him to Bill Hall learning the position isn't valuable or relevant. He's better than anyone else we could get - probably, but he's getting 10 million, probably more than ten percent of the payroll. Irribarren and Gwynn are both playing CF in the Winter league and hitting well. I realize there is a fetish for home runs and a strange hatred for Gwynn that is unrelated to reality, but Gwynn plus 2/3s of the money for a guy like Lowe is better than Cam with whatever scrap heap pitcher ends up with the Brewers that the same people will complain about. You can substitute numerous combinations but signing Cam means not signing someone else.
  16. Yes, playing at 2nd would help develop his skills. And honestly, the big difference between 2nd and SS is the relationship to first base. Fielding balls is the same. If you have some other reason, fine, but saying that it will harm him in some way is far-fetched in my opinion. You really like Escobar so you never want him to play at 2nd - okay, but that doesn't mean it wouldn't be good for him and the team. Hardy doesn't have range issues. The reason Weeks doesn't play SS is because he isn't a very good infielder. I don't see anything wrong with leaving Escobar at AAA for all or some of next year, but Weeks is average and seems to perform poorly defensively in high pressure situations.
  17. I assume that's an opinion, but it sounds as if you work for the Brewers in player development. Do you?
  18. I would do it to put him on the field and to eliminate Weeks from the lineup. The reverse of what you say is true. It would develop his skills and he would lose nothing by spending a year or so there. Playing 2nd isn't like learning catcher or CF. But you hate moving people around. Do you even know if JJ could play 3rd? And he profiles well at 2nd? If Escobar's defensive development was improved by playing a year at 2nd, then you'd be for it I guess.
  19. I'll bet you could go back a year and get opinions just like those that defend Rickie this year. He's a whole lot of average and cheap. That's a good argument, but you have to accept that he is affected by pressure. Why so much trouble turning a double play after years and years of practice? I remember when the chatter by Yost and the coaches was to get him to quit sidearming his throws. They obviously gave up on that. I think the only hope for him turning it around is if the Yost effect was a detriment. His unconditional love and unwillingness to hold him accountable for anything may have been a negative. You wouldn't be "wasting" anything by playing Escobar at 2nd for a year or so. I wish people would say the real reason they don't want a young kid to play at 2nd. I've yet to see someone do an honest breakdown of JJ's range either. People just look up a flawed statistic and declare him bad. He makes plays on the other side of 2nd and in left field. Hall often ranged too far to his left and interfered with plays. That negatively affects JJ's defensive ratings. If people want the rating to go up, the answer isn't to get rid of JJ. How does he rate in OOZ? Can a player do really well at that and have poor range? The answer is no.
  20. Keep Hardy at SS and put Escobar at 2nd if he comes up right away. That would be a thing of beauty. It wouldn't "waste" Escobar or affect his ceiling as if that should matter. Tell Prince to lose 40 lbs or so in the offseason. You can't determine 3rd without knowing what the organization truly thinks of Gamel. As much as everybody seems to have determined that he has little chance to succeed there and that statements put out by people like Don Money are disinformation, he may be the 3rd base of the future. If not there are a lot of different ways to go rather than shoehorning JJ there because everyone is so excited at seeing Escobar they demand that he play at the most demanding postition. You could play doubles defense all the time and have an awesome infield. Escobar can move to SS eventually and the sun will still rise if he spends a year or so at 2nd. Would it really be so bad to have great defense at 2nd along with speed on the bases and a solid contact hitter?
  21. What does it mean "to shrink his ceiling"?
  22. Buffoon, chum, incredibly irresponsible ad infinitum including distorting his reporting of badgerblogger. All this because someone is upset with his salty response on a blog. Dry your eyes. He's far and away the best reporter covering the Brewers. Its hard to even think of others really. McCalvy is kind of a go along guy who puts out some stuff in a pleasant manner. And then? Besides the comments on the blog are insane and all over the map. I give him kudos for actually wading into the swamp that is produced there. The whole thing with bunting has been talked about for years and includes comments over time by Yost and his own father. I think its odd as hell that he refuses. What's up with that?
  23. These late nights are killing me. Nix is with the team tonight, right? If he is, I predict using my Yost-o-meter that he gets a pinch hit opportunity. Ned likes to throw the kids in the water to see if they can swim.
  24. Nix is hitting well. It fits with the "hot hand" rhetoric. If Braun hasn't even been diagnosed and isn't significantly improved, he shouldn't be traveling with the team.
  25. Over at Redreporter they have taken to calling him soso Cordero. I thought that was funny.
