    Maybe i'm not as well informed, but I would think that Cain and Schafer would both start as CFs somewhere. Also, wasn't Lawrie at Huntsville at the end of the season? Could he start there and Farris would be at Nashville?

    Regarding Narvy's 08 stats: I remember McCalvy or someone in a radio interview saying that one of the "decision makers" wanted to bring him North to start that year. Was that the year Simmons was bench coach? Maybe it was him.

    That is too bad that the Sounds website is going to MLB. Its really kind of amazing how poorly much of the digital media is executed, but alas they are making lots of money so I'm sure they say whatever. I wonder if the guy who had a pretty nice Sounds blog will do it again this season.

    Seems like catcher is the only position player spot that isn't pretty much set. I see people say they want one guy or the other. Other than handedness, why are folks pulling either way?

    The pre-injury Bush wasn't all that hot. I get the impression that he is beloved by Melvin though.

    In the old days, the father's job was to pass out cigars. The women stayed a few days in the hospital as well. A lot of the time families visit to help out when the baby came home and guys still didn't have much to do with the baby.

    He looked like he was pitching hurt. Remember how he would put his hand on his hip and stretch his back a lot? I wouldn't mind him gone, but I think a guy should get credit for pitching not completely healthy rather than dinged for it. What gets me is the guy looks kind of doughy. Maybe I'm wrong and he's more fit than I think, but I wonder what would have happened if he really came into camp with his fitness kicked up a notch.

    Yes. Time to let go of Bush. His contract isn't guaranteed. Even if they did that, they've got too many arms that they can't stash.

    Hey, don't move the goalposts. "Hardly" is the standard. I think most people would equate that around horrible or OPSing around .600. I also said "putting aside the slugging." Again, what is an acceptable OBP? To hit well, does he need a .400 OBP? Are you thinking higher than that?

    Hardly hit in the minors? Is your standard premium prospect level? Setting aside the slugging, in order to be considered just good, not very good or excellent, do you need a .380 or .400 OBP? And yeah, that most definitely is an opinion. So is "decent" defensively.

    Its tough to read whether posters are trying to be objective or are being sarcastic or argumentative. Individual opinions are by definition subjective which isn't inherently a negative. I think you'll have a hard time getting much agreement that CM's defense was "really poor" and that he hardly hit in the minors. Its natural to wonder why someone would make those statements.

    I think he looked heavier last year. I don't buy that he's being given special treatment over Gamel. And for all you know, the team could be maximizing its resources. They may plan on trading McGehee at some point or view him as the best backup for Weeks. I'm a huge Gamel fan, but if he spends time in AAA, the Earth won't stop spinning. I've wasted time defending him as a potential MLBer as a lot of the stat oriented types don't even think he can play much in the majors. The arguments that McGehee is almost certainly somewhere between mediocre and a future failure are thinly supported. There's a good chance that they both succeed.

    Speaking of those guys, they are starting their radio gigs where they call in. I hope they make them available to listen to if folks miss them or are out of their radio market (or cough have a hard time with some of the radio hosts). The one this morning TH talked about how the team is excited about Gomez and think he can improve at the plate and noted the age similarity between him and Schafer and Cain in suggesting that the guy should get some slack. That's my paraphrase so don't hang him for that.

    Having Prince is not a $2 million difference in team revenue. That's just one of the considerations that is involved. I also don't buy that its a choice between Prince and having a competitive team.

    JSonline pounds out a lot of quality copy. I was really surprised by the Witrado piece. I think his writing can be a bit clumsy at times and I thought it was well done. I do remember him on a radio show last year calling Prince a "punk" and saying that he thought the reason he went after Manny was because he was sort of a weakling. The logic seems off, but if I were a player and got trashed like that, I'd probably say "no thanks" to interview requests from that writer.

    There are other factors to consider, like how much revenue he generates. The existence of prior bad trades don't make it easy to make another one.

    It almost seems like the plan is to expect an injury. If that's plan A, who knows what plan B is. After hiring Hawkins, there really is only the one slot in the bullpen open, so it isn't easy to stash someone there. I have a hard time imagining Parra not making the rotation, but what do I know? Long shot possibilities: trade Suppan and eat most of his contract to someone like the Royals. They did eat Hall's contract and that shocked me. Or cut Bush before the season. Speaking of Hall, its pretty weird to think of him on the bench in Boston.

    Melvin is the guy with the obsession with older players. Edmonds gave an interview where he said DM had him as a virtual lock for the team. Inglett rather than Iribarren or Heether.

    If MLEs were simply outcomes versus outcomes compared, the formula would be simple and we'd know that formula. Because its proprietary, we can't measure its effectiveness. Beyond that, an MLE is like knowing the result of a formula, the final number, and some of the variables in that formula, but not all including ones that can be large, like injuries or coaching. The number of possible variables is quite large. Someone like Casey could be a pull hitter and his home AAA park could have a high LF wall. That's just an example of a large number of possibilities. Yes, the two words aren't synonyms. Proprietary means owned. That almost always means that its done for gain or hope of future gain. The one we're talking about is probably from Fangraphs and I'd guess its a commercial, proprietary product of STATS. I don't follow the Twins closely, but I hear their fans complain about their lack of pitching including the minors. I don't think Casey will be all that valuable after one year. The people involved have probably seen numerous "one year wonders." The chance for him being a significantly lesser player greatly diminishes if he does it for another year and then there might be a bigger payoff, but that's a WAG.

    It apparently does much more than that. Exactly what is difficult to say. Like I said, there is no way to measure its bluntness. Even describing it as blunt may be wrong as it implies that with sharpening it will perform its claimed function and that may not be true. Its fun for conversation, but I think it should be dismissed as more than that. Its commercial in that its a proprietary product. Is its methodology published somewhere that I'm not aware of?

    He played a game at 2B and "robbed" some infield singles according to one of the gamethreads. Seems like every time I check out one of them, there is someone saying "I love Bill Hall." After he was DFA'd, I'd read stuff by fans of other teams that said they don't want him because he's bad defensively. I guess he must have had a bad UZR, but one thing he can do is play defense. Where his bat went and whether it'll ever come back, I have no idea.

    MLE is a recent invention - there is no telling what reliability or validity it has and there probably never will be as its a commercial product. I find the notion that he would have had to put up an enormous stat line to produce the equivalent of the stat line he's producing this year far fetched. And he'll never hit the way he did this year based on his iso in the minors and mle? If only it were that simple.
