  1. How many comments by actual scouts are there in print? Keith Law and Kevin Goldstein don't count.
  2. There are a lot of good arguments, but I have a hard time believing that Mat can't get as much instruction as he needs from both Money and the roving infield instructor.
  3. I'll be shocked if anything interesting or informative comes out of this interview. Rome usually either praises his guests to an embarrassing degree or trashes people who don't come on. The big question will be whether the Brewers can compete for a playoff spot and he will say yes. Any question about his health will be that he is fine. Toss in some fluff about his clothing line. Whoever listens be sure and post anything interesting or informative. I'll gladly eat crow.
  4. Man, if Soup could be around a 5.5 ERA and hit a high innings limit, that would be a great thing. Three or 4 runs given up and leaving around the 6th inning, the team would probably win a fair number of games. Its hard to discuss someone who is so brutally bad in his last start, especially after the game in the playoffs and the last month. Is there anyone who follows the Cubs even casually who doesn't know that Soriano loves hitting early count fastballs? Why did he have batters where he was waaaaay off the strike zone for most or all of his pitches? There were people who did a screen capture of Corey's awful at bat last September. Soup's would be just as painful I'd guess. It seems like it goes beyond a bad outing or a small sample. When I see his older games on the MLB network, he looks pretty much the same stuff wise. Maybe if he isn't physically injured, he's mentally wounded. There seems to be more to the story whatever it is.
  5. I'm liking Macha a lot right now. Beyond the general actions of managing - putting together lineups and bullpen management et cetera, there seems to be a different atmosphere. Most notably, being hacktastic at the plate is not acceptable. Re: Suppan, there aren't a lot of choices and anything drastic won't happen quickly. Re: phrases I am worn out on, I am about as sick as can be of they or he "plays the game the right way." Usually it means trying all the time to which I say whoopie.
  6. I remember Braun having a couple problems, with the main one being he airmailed throws when he had plenty of time. He would do that stutter step thing and then send it high. The little that is available about Gamel seems to indicate that he is inconsistent. He can make all the plays, has soft hands and throws well, but occasionally crosses himself up with footwork. Really, it seems that the bold declarations of his incompetence come from his error totals and a couple of anonymous "scouts."
  7. The noise about Weeks is loud and persistent. It has nothing to do with Haudricourt or Witrado. Listen to the radio or talk to other Brewers fans. Melvin is probably trying to proactively turn down the sound. Personally, I think the mods should cut off the use of the term "tard." At least for me it was popular with the kids who were jerks in middle school. I really haven't encountered an adult who uses the term since other than on Brewers forums. The bullpen catcher runs a charity to help developmentally disabled kids. Can you imagine him cruising through the forum and encountering people using the term "tard."
  8. That Heether/McGehee comparison is interesting. With Counsell on the bench, it seems crazy that they would keep Lamb. I can understand Melvin's desire to keep an injury replacement stockpiled in AAA, but with Heether or McGehee there, what's the point? Let one of the youngsters who is performing better have the bench spot.
  9. I'm glad Braun didn't play last night with the rain and sometimes windy conditions. The fact that the next round is in LA worries me a bit. When Braun had his torso strain last year, the fans were told that he was fine when he was dragged out on the West Coast trip that included LA where Braun and his family live. Later it turned out that it was still bothering him. The team admits that he'll hide injuries. Maybe he fooled them or maybe Yost rolled over for him. Now he has a chance to play for the national team in front of his family and friends in LA and call me crazy for thinking that he might play when he should rest or be limited to rehabilitation. Is that a lack of understanding that injuries are a part of life? I also don't think its a freak injury.
  10. Is this true? Regardless, the comparison should be between K-ing and not K-ing which would include hits.
  11. Did he even call him out?
  12. I got the impression that Witrado was just relaying Melvin's view of Weeks.
  13. Maybe there should be an analyst factor like a park factor. Think of 15th as more like 9th or 10th. I know some of the stuff written by Kahrl has been flat out whacky, like trading 3 top prospects to get Peavy's 60 million dollar contract or the preseason preview. Goldstein and Kahrl are both from Chicago. I wouldn't be surprised if they shared the common regional view that the Brewers are sort of the irritating country bumpkins who will never amount to anything. Here is a video of them from last season on a book tour: http://fora.tv/2008/03/10/2008_Baseball_Prospectus#chapter_01
  14. There are football and basketball players who aren't in elite shape. Don't make me post a picture of Grady Jackson or Gilbert Brown.
  15. As to pitch counts Macha could also be referring to an B-game, minor league camp or Australia exhibition performances. Its hard to judge the comments by a couple written lines. Anything is better than Yost's robotic "he'll be fine."
  16. Whoever thinks baseball isn't physically demanding should run as fast as he can and slide into a base, preferably home plate with a catcher wearing protective gear blocking it. Then swing a bat as hard as you can a few dozen times. Follow by running full tilt in the outfield and dive with your body in full extension before landing on the ground. Be sure and make a video, post it to youtube and have your nurse post the url here.
  17. Its just my impression, but McClung seems much more effective with the extra couple mph on his pitches when he relieves. He can pound some strikes and mix in his off speed pitch whereas when he starts his fastball is more hittable. Melvin made a remark about him (in the last WSSP interview I think) that I interpreted as he might get a shot at being the alternative closer when Hoffman can't go. At least to me that and some middle inning work seems like a better fit. He's done well in some past starts but he seems like he can mentally melt down once in a while. Suppan with all his weaknesses is steady in his effort if not in his results. As to the team being good or bad this year, it sure seems like it has potential and it would have the added bonus of Cubs and Cards blogs/forums have already decided that the team has no realistic chance.
  18. Those are the adjective. Here is the noun: the distinctive clothing worn by members of the same organization or body or by children attending certain schools.
  19. I won't touch the Braun comment, but I'd say Billy is a natural infielder. He's also hit his share of MLB pitching. I'd also add that arguing that a theory can't be disproved isn't persuasive. I could argue that demons or aliens were affecting Rickie's play and you couldn't disprove it. There are even people who might believe it - hopefully nobody on this forum.
  20. I think you should question the assumption that Rickie is practicing negative behavior. Additionally sports is filled with players who became great despite not executing in fundamentally sound ways.
  21. Ron and Pat made it sound like there were a couple nice defensive plays. I would like to have seen the play of Billy making an overhead catch and the Prince to 2nd to Bush covering 1st DP. It also seems like there is regularly some admiration of Cain making plays. Anybody with the MLBtv thing see those?
  22. Maybe part of sending Swindle down is the thinking of stashing a mid-season replacement in case of injury or Stetter losing the strike zone as he does on occasion. Yesterday Melvin made a similar comment that could be interpreted that way regarding Lamb and McGehee on WSSP. Squeaky...er, I mean Sparky assumed just that.
  23. Narcissus redux.
  24. Based on bits and pieces of Melvin and Ash comments it sounds as if the team floated the idea of trading Hardy for pitching in the off season and were only offered back 4/5 starters. I'd say the chances of the return for trading him will go up, especially if he is traded at the deadline to a team like the Red Sox or Yankees. I also wouldn't be surprised if Hardy were willing to sign an extension at a decent price if he was allowed to play SS.
  25. Regarding Dillard: somewhere I heard Melvin say that starting gave him a way to develop pitches. He mentioned them but I can't recall. Is there a shortage of starters in Nashville this season? Wright, Green, Narron...
