  1. Does Jack Z want to be a GM?
  2. But what do you want, a breakdown of Gabe Gross for the umpteenth time? That post hardly compares to the snotty arrogance that pops up regularly.
  3. And he has had a pipeline of outstanding position players.
  4. You could be right. He also seems to have favorites who have enormously long leashes.
  5. Yost said something like, Stetter has to throw strikes if he wants to stay in the major leagues. If that is an inaccurate paraphrase, I welcome correction. I was kind of shocked by his statement. He usually will let a player fail for a year or two. And of course, McClung has already had important innings which were key to a couple victories. He also has had a significant change in mechanics.
  6. Woah, now they're #4 type starters. Wow. Not that it matters, but you just invented an argument for me before you mightily struck it down. I doubt Cappy will ever do much in MLB and not because of his arm although that might be the excuse given. Bush is winding down as well. So what is the answer to how long pitchers have to perform badly before a GM lets there be an open competition for their positions on the team?
  7. So two years of bad results is what a good GM would wait for? Three perhaps? Bush has a heck of a start. A couple crude indicators should be weighed against observing the actual performance and, of course, including results. And what is the upside? Even his devotees only claim he can become a decent five - that's at best. Cappy is toast and he pretty much was before the injury. Holding on to them makes no sense. What is the point of running Bush out again? If the team can have a game where they hit double digits or maybe only come close, the Brewers can win. Otherwise they won't.
  8. In the midst of all the angst and tumult, that made me laugh.
  9. I think it would be interesting to have a summary of the arguments against and for. Under both would be ones that aren't agreed on. For instance, I'd have to say a strong argument against him was the use of Capuano and Bush last year and then given the bad performances, carrying that over to this year. Its completely insane to run Bush out again. I have to wonder what the players think every time that happens. What would Melvin have been able to do without a pipeline of extraordinary position players?
  10. Relevant stats for Dave Bush this year: April 03 - 5.1 innings - 6 earned April 09 - 5.1 innings - 4 earned April 15 - 6.0 innings - 3 earned April 23 - 6.0 innings - 4 earned May 07 - 6.0 innings - 5 earned About the same as spring training when the reason/excuse was that he was working on new pitches. Definition of Random: Made, done, happening, or chosen without method or conscious decision. Marcel the Monkey's ability to forecast accurately: about 65 percent by most accounts versus about 70 percent of more complex competing systems. Of course, the definition of accuracy will bend greatly in order to sell the product.
  11. Plus Lee isn't looking all that great these days, especially for a 100M. Cordero never gave Melvin a chance to make a counter offer. I can't think of any reason he's not here other than he didn't want to be, which makes me wonder why he didn't.
  12. No it doesn't. We're not talking about flipping coins or the height of offspring. We're talking about pitching performance. If you, in your devotion to him, or anyone else wants to make the argument that Bush is unlucky, go for it. Unfortunately, Brewers games are televised and people watch Bush do things like throw his twisty 85 mph fastball over the middle of the plate. And yes, he is a 6-7 ERA guy. I don't think you know what regression to the mean is despite your condescending, arrogant response. And the only irony around here is yours.
  13. I honestly have no idea what the answer to the original question is. The Boston series will be intense though. If whiny Ned doesn't like the creampuff media around here, good luck having the same questions beat to death by reporters who would enjoy his acidic responses. Melvin will get some media requests too. And if they get beat up by the Sawwwwwx, it'll be in a national spotlight. If they were winning, I'd expect to see Mark A. in the stands somewhere, but what'll he do if they're still playing badly? Maybe Bush will get a start against the Sox.
  14. Bush is bad. It was foolish to include him at the start of the season. He's not going to win games because of "regression to the mean" which makes no sense in that context. And yes, he is a 6-7 ERA guy.
  15. Personally, I don't think anyone would claim Bush because he isn't very good. I don't believe that other teams aren't competing to win either. Forcing the Brewers to keep Bush is a near guarantee of increasing our number of losses. Turnbow is a question because of his contract, but lots of teams would take McClung at this point. They all have access to video of his performances this year. I'm sure the Cardinals would take him in an instant.
  16. Just because Gord Ash tells Haudricourt that, doesn't mean its true or that that was the case in this instance. And if your scenario were true, a team could take a shot at getting McClung by claiming Bush.
  17. Selective use of statistics with no mention of skill level, history or abilities: weak argument. Accusation of borderline trollish behavior: a swinging K.
  18. Someone's career ERA doesn't determine where they play. But a career 4.57? That sounds like someone who should be a member of the media.
  19. I don't think that just because other teams have weaknesses or lack of depth, that they would want more of the same. Just because players exist on rosters with similar numbers doesn't mean that a team wants that situation. McClung pitched in ST, started in Nashville last year, and played in Milwaukee for a few as well. I assume that the hate for him by various people is due to the fact that a fan favorite is being squeezed out.
  20. The idea that teams wouldn't take Bush because the Brewers would take him back is far fetched. I fail to see why it would even be considered. If he were as valuable as his fandom on here thought, his salary isn't very high. People talk about him being a good #4.
  21. I think its amazing that people imagine that Bush wasn't claimed because other managers are being nice or because the Brewers would have taken him back. He's mediocre to bad. He's exactly the kind of guy that teams want to replace if they have one so why would they take him? It was silly to keep him out of spring training. He means losses. If he puts up his bulldog 5-6-7 era in Nashville, should he be brought back? And no, don't put him in the bullpen. McClung is far better at this point.
  22. Great shot of the Phils manager
  23. Braun is very un-cocky. I don't have a problem with what he did against Houston last year either. He looked over at Vinny Rottino who had been in a scrape with Brandon Backe and felt wronged by him. Rather than play dirty ala LaRussa, he got some revenge by playing the game well. That's class. That's character. All sorts of players take more time and watch their HRs for longer than Ryan did and that includes ones without much service time. If he didn't have a lot of confidence, he'd probably struggle more.
  24. Well, Gwynn has to take a ball he should catch and slap it over the fence to turn it into a critical two run home run for starters.
  25. Etymology is the study of the development of language, not just its origins. Mediocre means not very good. I have no idea whether that comports with its original usage, not that its relevant. Not very good and rather poor can certainly be the same and it certainly isn't wildly unreasonable, patented or not. Seriously, do you think anyone uses the historic meaning of decimate, which was a punishment of one in ten, not a casualty of one in ten.
