  1. Second Balkin's comments on transportation. The shuttles to and from bars are a free and easy way to get there as long as you can tolerate a ride with a bunch of drunk people (especially on the ride back). Anything in particular you're looking for in terms of bars/restaurants? Could go on and on, but any particular type of food? Busier pubs with Brewers fans around vs quieter spots? College crowd vs older crowd? Etc?
  2. Why not? Because they might beat us for the next 1.5 years? That's going to happen whether or not they have Lucroy, may as well take some prospects from them in the meantime.
  3. Getting the feeling we'll end up with no trade. I know it's not the end of the world if so, but I would be very disappointed. As a Brewers fan this is the height of the season most years...so it would be disappointing to not gain a little hope for the future today to get me through the rest of a hopeless season. Would be happy to be wrong. EDIT: And just like that, Smith is traded, HA! Here's hoping more to follow!
  4. So did Lucroy go to San Diego with the team? I'd assume he did, but would stink to go all the way out there then potentially have to fly back to wherever later today
  5. For a trade everyone seems to be assuming is going to happen, it's been awfully quiet for 12+ hours. Even overnight, in today's world of social media that is a bit concerning...but maybe without the Mets involved there's just no one out there to throw rumors out there left and right.
  6. I agree with your post, though would argue that the problem with the Brewers farm system was as much if not moreso the Brewers' inability to recognize a team that couldn't realistically contend after 2011 and after Greinke was traded, instead reaching on free agents and not trading other pieces at peak value. The first step now is to rebuild, but I also hope once rebuilt there is a new franchise philosophy to sell pieces when their value is highest if the team is not a legit contender. We will never compete year-in and year-out, but with a good strategy hopefully we will have a year or two here and there to reload rather than the debacle of needing years of a rebuild that we put ourselves in this time.
  7. We all want the same thing, first and foremost a contending major league club, as well as a solid farm system to create consistency in the years to follow. Fact is, the Brewers club from top to bottom was in shambles because since 2012 they focused on the MLB team while the farm system fell apart. not trading guys at peak value for the sake of "going for it" with a mediocre team, free agent contracts to aging pitchers, poor drafting and developing, etc. That is why we are in this mess to begin with. If the Brewers could put a legit contender on the field next year, of course they would. But realistically it is going to take 2-3 years to assemble enough talent to put together an MLB contender. This MLB club is not 1 or 2 players away from contending, and the we do not have the resources - financially or in prospects - for the number and quality of guys that would get us there without mortgaging the future in spectacular fashion. We all want to win now or next year, but most realize that is simply unrealistic and prefer a higher chance at competing - and doing so consistently - in a few years above a short-sighted win-now approach that would likely lead to more mediocre non-playoff teams and a wasteland of a farm system with a bleak future.
  8. So any word on if there is still momentum here? Haven't heard any rumblings for a few hours.
  9. Where are you getting those numbers from? His stats aren't even close to that. Russell Branyan was a career .232 hitter who struck out once every three plate appearances. I'm guessing thats OBP/SLG/OPS
  10. I'm far from an expert on the whole starting of the service clock thing... Gallo has less than 130AB's as a big-leaguer. In theory, if the Brewers got him and put him in AAA the rest of the year could he have his clock not start until next season? Guessing no, but would be interested to hear a more detailed run-down of the rule if anyone is able.
  11. I'm ok with Gallo but not enamored. For the people that seem to think he's going to be Adam Dunn 2.0 - tons of K's but also lots of HR's and high OBP...here are Dunn's AAA stats (age 21): .329/.441/.676/1.117 If we get Gallo I hope I'm wrong, but his AAA numbers are cause for concern.
  12. Maybe he doesn't want Gallo. Or feels the value he gets is better spent on multiple good prospects rather than putting all the eggs in the basket of one "elite" prospect with one tool. I'm plus or minus on Gallo, would be happy to have him, but he most definitely does not need to be a part of it.
  13. The whole supposedly not getting playing time in 2017 is a joke, no way Cleveland would make this trade and then not start a top-3 catcher in all of baseball over Gomes. It's pretty simple, Lucroy wanted his 2017 option waived and Cleveland wouldn't give up that package for 0.5 years rather than 1.5 years. Don't blame either side for that, we as Brewers fans just get the short end of it all in the meantime...as is tradition.
  14. Have to say, I have been a big Stearns guy since the start, but this one makes him looks pretty bad. I obviously don't know all the details or how this normally works...but to go through all that work with a team on Lucroy's no-trade list without an assurance that he will waive the clause seems pretty bad. Now all the teams know exactly what kind of package we would accept for Lucroy (and while I was ok with the return, it's obviously not a huge one) and know that a big bidder is completely out of the race. All our cards are now out on the table, lots of leverage lost.
  15. No animosity towards Lucroy from me, it's a business involving millions of dollars. He has a no-trade clause for a reason, and is exercising his negotiating leverage to improve his career just like any of us would. That said, this does make it easier for me to say goodbye (if and when he does go) without getting too sentimental. And this sucks for the Brewers. Anyone saying multiple proven minor league talents are worse than a comp pick just because they aren't top-50 starting pitching prospects is just wrong.
  16. And now we can turn around and trade him for one of those better deals that were out there? I can understand if people didn't love the return, but this was obviously the deal DS felt was best. So people are now happy we can go looking for a 2nd best return?
  17. Let's also not forget the PTBNL in the Indians-Brewers Sabathia deal...turned out to be the best prospect we sent their way.
  18. If the 4th player is McKenzie, I am thrilled with the return. May not be 4 guys at the top of their prospect list, but would be 4 guys with big upside. Without a nice 4th piece, preferably a pitcher...I'm a bit underwhelmed. But as always only time would tell.
  19. Quick shoutout to the Brewerfan moderators. This is bar-none the best sports message board I've ever come across on the internet - well-intentioned posters, none of the standard internet message board bullies and trolls, civil and most of all very informed baseball discussion. It's no coincidence, thanks for all you do! Ok back to nervously refreshing twitter every 12 seconds...
  20. Ok. If true, we'll find out soon enough.
  21. Andrew Benintendi not in the lineup tonight, nor is Christian Vasquez...interesting
