  1. It's really more a commentary on Betancourt than Counsell. Neither is an everyday major league shortstop at this point, but Counsell is better at getting on base and, at least IMO, better defensively. In the end, it's really a commentary on how poorly the SS position was handled for this season. I actually generally like Melvin, unlike many on this board, but this was certainly a miss for him, and one that I think many saw coming. I don't want to turn this into a Melvin thing, but ultimately I think there needs to be a definitive move made at the deadline if this team is truly going to go for it. It doesn't have to be a blockbuster for someone like Reyes either, just a serviceable bat and good defender.
  2. *Small sample size warning!* Yuni's past 17 games: 8-56, 1 HR, 5 RBI, 1 BB, 1 IBB, .143/.153/.232/.385 Yikes. So why does this guy get to start every day? It's not like he has a good track record to warrant sticking with him through thick and thin. I don't think Counsell is necessarily an everyday option either, but why no consideration of a platoon at least?
  3. Good thing we took out Mitre, who was making all his pitches.
  4. Also, why let Wolf hit here? He's been getting hit hard, walking batters, and he has 91 pitches. No way he goes more than one more inning, and we'll be lucky if it's scoreless.
  5. Love Rock for calling out Wolf there. "It's tough for a catcher to call a game for a pitcher that can't consistently throw any of his 4 pitches for strikes." Thank you, and I hope the people that claim Rock is a homer and apologist were listening.
  6. How many times have our good hitters bunted this year? Or even our bad hitters?
  7. I hate to keep piling on Gomez now that he's out of the 2-spot, but his bunting is an embarrassment. Particularly for someone with so much speed.
  8. Soooooooo close to the optimal lineup. I don't mean to quibble when we've finally made an important move, but why does the worst hitter on the team (Gomez included) get to bat 6??? Baby steps I guess.
  9. Pretty good article here about Killebrew and the logo. RIP Harmon.
  10. This is particularly true when the guy batting 7th is getting on base at a .248 clip. I feel like this is also overlooked a bit in this all. Not only will moving Lucroy up to bat least 7 replace our worst hitter with one of our best hitters in an important run-producing spot in the order (behind good hitters in Hart/McGehee), it also removes our worst hitter from batting directly in front of one of our best hitters. With Betancourt creating outs at this frenzied pace, Lucroy is going to have to bat more often with 2 outs, leading off an inning, etc. It's the same argument as Gomez in the 2-hole. Why would we put our worst hitter right in front of one of our most productive hitters? I have to believe having Fielder/McGehee/Hart in front of Lucroy has to create more runs than McGehee/Hart/Betancourt.
  11. Can someone please print this and show it to Roenicke? Seriously, just wad up the paper and throw it in the dugout. How can any logical person look at this and think our current order is optimal?
  12. What we learned in this game (again): Betancourt and Gomez's offense = bad. Gomez's defense and Marcum's pitching = very good.
  13. He also has just 1 walk in those past 10 innings pitched.
  14. I'm as afraid of Axford as the next guy, but FWIW in his past 10 appearances he has an ERA of 2.70 and WHIP of 1.10. Not dominant necessarily, but not bad either.
  15. Ok, now that actually makes some sense. McGehee is slow as molasses.
  16. I'd be interested to know what the anti-bunting crowd thinks about Casey laying one down here. Obviously he won't, but IMO he obviously should.
  17. Loe looks like he's got his good sinker tonight. When he's got that working, he's very tough.
  18. It'd be interesting to see what percentage of bunt attempts Gomez has actually put in play this year...
  19. Gorgeous pitch from Marcum there. Thank you for not bunting Mattingly.
  20. Agree. Not to get too off topic, but a point of comparison for the Yuni defenders. Admittedly Yuni has a small sample size (although not that small), but during their careers as Brewers: Yuniesky Betancourt: .581 OPSChad Moeller: .576 OPS Just saying.
  21. Coming into tonight: .228/.250/.331/.581. That's not bad, that's terrible. And that's not to mention his lack of range of defense.
  22. There is the epitome of why the Brewers struggle to score runs when they don't hit dingers. Betancourt with a useless at bat, and Lucroy's long fly ball goes for nothing. I don't know if every Major League is like this nowadays, but the Brewers are terrible at small ball.
  23. Ok can I say something nice about Gomez now? WOW!!!!!
  24. Ok Ron, well then why not put Braun or Fielder in the 8-hole? Oh, because it's more important to put your best hitters in run-producing spots in the order? So why does that not apply to, arguably, the 3rd or 4th best hitter in your lineup this year?
