  1. That is entirely incorrect. I am 99% sure that they were all international free agents not subject to the draft. You are right. But neither ranks as top 30 guys for a very bad Mariner farm system. To call that alarming is an understatement. I am liking Atlanta's GM a lot more than our guy. Sound analysis. 18 year old kids that don't have prototypical star talent may not make the top 30. Very hard to judge at that age, though, yes, we can assume that chances are none of these guys will be aces. That said, we're probably fielding offers of guys that project to be Cody Asche or maybe a solid #4 starter type prospects. I think you've valued Lind a little too high, and the Brewers are choosing to trust their lower-level scouting to see if they can unearth a gem at a young age (3 bullets in the chamber instead of 1) or maybe just 2 productive MLB players.
  2. Why can't they just take the best player currently offered right now, regardless of position, and acquire LHP in the draft, Luc trade, Davis trade next year, Peralta trade, Segura trade, etc. Lind is a 1 year, decent rental. No guarantee that any semblance of a decent LHP is being offered. How would we have any idea? If you're mad that Peterson is what they take - why would you assume that somebody is offering a better LHP option?
  3. We don't really have anything available that they need. Maybe Segura, if they want to make a lateral move with some small upside at SS? That's about it.
  4. Won't matter if he doesn't hit he's not going to make it to Milwaukee. Take a look at this guy, who may not have had as long/bad of a season as Peterson, but struggled/had a mediocre hitting season every time he jumped to the next level.
  5. Do we move Peterson back to 3B? I know he's supposedly not that good on defense, but a thought.
  6. This seems absurd, though. He had a good year, but he could fall off a cliff any year now. Turns 35 early this season.
  7. They are going to be trading Starlin very soon (tonight) so he'll have some playing time opened up.
  8. Really young and posted a pretty solid .364 OBP in the minors. I think a lot would depend on his catching ability as well. Yeah, I think I misread his stats in the minors. I liked him coming up - and .364 is palatable for sure.
  9. Yeah, not a bad risk to take. I like the power and at worst, he hits 25 homers in Milwaukee.
  10. Yes, it was a salary dump for San Diego who doesn't have a direction. I think Gyorko will basically always get starts at 3B or 2B against lefties. Heck, he even started playing a little SS last year. I may have been overstating the Petco factor in my analysis. Gyroko isn't hitting that well anywhere. That said, I think they'll probably find a way to get that power potential out of him.
  11. The WARs might not play out for this theory, but I feel like the Cardinals win again, even if Gyorko doesn't really have a starting position in St. Louis.
  12. Would Toronto be looking to move Lucroy to 1B/DH? They already have Russell Martin.
  13. ChiChi is an interesting prospect to me. Generally a player I shy away from. Barely striking out 7 batters/9 in the minors. 1.3 WHIP isn't all that impressive in the minors either. That said, he is very young and was pretty productive at age 23 in the majors. He's a groundball guy, right?
  14. Austin Jackson went to the Cubs so it's a different Jackson.
  15. That's even less than I expected. A corner infielder with a .636 OPS as a 23 year old in AA? Hope there's another name. Yeah, well he had good years the previous 2 in low-A, A, and a bit in AA. First round pick so the trade would be assuming he can bounce back or figure out the AAA level.
  16. D.J. Peterson's name is popping up. Moved to 1B for Seager but could play 3B. Doesn't look like an elite 1B (as in top flight hitter) but might have a future at 3B. First round pick.
  17. If they honestly believe #2, especially after they've already made a few other "sell" trades...that's pretty depressing.
  18. Stan Musial. Ted Williams. Randy Johnson. Mariano Rivera. Hank Aaron hit 40 HR's w/ a .402 OBP at age 39. However, yes, your point is well made, in general. There have been exceptions I know that they may not be the massive muscle inducing ones that Bonds and the like did, and that we're opening up an argument on here - but greenies and maybe other PEDs were out there when Hank played.
  19. Let's see if he goes back to a 3.6-3.7 ERA out of the magical confines of the Cardinals organization.
  20. Not sure what the deal was but he had a horrid, horrid hitting season this past year in AAA. Might as well give him a shot, though. Could be an OK stopgap guy.
  21. Why the heck do I have to bet on him getting a FIP in the 2s!? Just getting back to a stat line similar to 2014 would give him a lot more value than he does now. He was a bit lucky in 2014, but yeah, he was productive. The issue is then: how much value does a "decent" pitcher have on a tanking team have with only 3 years of control left as of right now? I'm not going to hold on to Peralta for dear life hoping he improves from "below average" to "decent" to close this thing out. That's like holding out on a stock that has a "hold" status in hopes that you might see a 1% gain next year when the stock is known to have the risk of the bottom falling out. If that's the case, just sell now. You could get your 1% gain but I'd rather not wait for that at the risk of Tommy John surgery or a 5 ERA.
  22. Just toying around with "similarity scores" on Baseball-Reference. Peralta is almost step-for-step with Carlos Carrasco at this point in his career. Here's the thing: You have to bet on Peralta having a Carrasco-esque figuring it out moment that gets him into a mid/high 2s FIP pitcher this coming season. That's your gamble. The rest of the guys on his similarity score are just run-of-the-mill low-end starters like Randy Wells, Miguel Gonzalez, Dillon Gee, and Jeff Niemann. Overwhelming chances are that he falls in the 2nd bucket. I'm willing to give him half a season to see what he can do but I'm more than likely OK with trading him if the price is right.
  23. That is probably not a fair trade. Would you give up Khris Davis and Domingo Santana for Tom Koehler? Just curious but do you think that the trade you just gave me is the same as Jake Lamb and Peter O'Brien? Tried to as best I could. 2 "pretty good" prospects with most of their team control remaining.
