  1. Yes it would be a gamble, but any big deal to any player esspecially pitcher's are going to have a good amount of risk involved with it. There have been plenty of younger pitchers who have gotten big deals and fizzled, on longer deals, like Pavano and Hampton. At least with an older player you are only giving him 4 years at most because of that risk as opposed to going 6-8 on a younger guy.
  2. I dont think that is a guarantee that Lowe gets a 4 year deal. The brewers can make a competitive three year deal, if Lowe takes it or not that is another story. Also Lowe has not shown any signs of slowing down in fact this year, he had arguably the second best year of his career.
  3. Holy cow I did not realize that Weeks got his OBP up to 342, he must have had quetly put together a nice second half. If only he could do that for the whole year, we would have our leadoff hitter.
  4. Ill pass on penny, unless it is an incentive contract, but I would love to get Lowe. He is in my opinion one of the most underated pitchers in baseball, he has pitched over 199 innings the last 4 years, with an ERA under 4 in each of those seasons. Lowe does not walk guys, and even in Miller park he would not give up a ton of home runs, because he has a great groundball rate. That groundball rate is kind of a concern to me though. The brewers do not have a very good defense, so that could be a problem since he does not strike out a ton of guys, and relies on the infielders to make the plays. If we get Lowe I would like to see Escobar take over at short which improves our infield range dramatically, and allows the brewers to trade one of the top 5 offensive shortstops in the game for some much needed bullpen help. Huston Street closing would be mighty nice.
  5. I do not think that the royals would be able to get a player of Hardy's caliber, nor could they get a prospect of Gamel, or Escobar's status for DeJesus.
  6. I would assume if he comes back it will be a contract like Bartolo Colon, or Weaver's. A minor league deal, with a deadline for the brewers to call him up, and incentives for innings pitched.
  7. I do not see enough upside with Theriot that would warrant us giving up enough to pry him away from chicago where he is a cult hero. I am not saying that he isnt a good player, but it would cost an arm and a leg for chicago to give him up.
  8. We can just pick up Cameron's option for 10 million, and it wont cost us any players. Damon is a superior hitter, and left handed. Cameron is a much better defender, Damon is decent in center as far as range goes, if healthy which is a big if, and has a poor arm. As far as trading Hart goes, it just seems like the wrong time to trade him. After the second half he has had I cannot imagine you would get fair value back.
  9. After numerous blogs threw out the idea of trading Reyes, Wright, or Beltran, John Heyman said that the mets "seem dead set against breaking up their star-studded nucleus of Jose Reyes, David Wright and Carlos Beltran." I dont think that it is impossible to get one of these guys, but very unlikely and it would cost a ton, and they would probably want major league ready players. If we are going to give up a bunch of players, I would prefer Wright
  10. I would like to see the brewers go with Heether next year in counsell's spot. Heether has played very well the last couple of years in the minors, posting a 829 OPS this year in nashville, and an 817 OPS in 07, he has also had an OBP over 370 the last two years. Having Heether replace counsell would save the brewers about 2.5 million dollars.
  11. Ben really has not had that many huge games to pitch, so to draw an opinion of him from just a handful of bad games is a little bit unfair. Regardless he still had a great year, with an ERA right around three, and almost 200 innings. Ben probably could have logged a few more innings, but then again the brewers could have abused him less from 02-04. I will miss ben, he had great stuff, and is really a great guy.
  12. There is a stub from tonights game up on ebay right now, and is currently at $20.50, with 6 bids. One thing to keep in mind is that the condition of the stub can also influence the value.
  13. Genesis- Selling England By the Pound.
  14. I think the Brewers best option is to trade Hardy for pitching, since Hall will not get you anything other than another bad contract, and Weeks value has also fallen pretty far since the start of the year. Moving Hardy hurts his value on the open market, at shortstop he is a great offensive player, at third he is merley above average. I would also like to see us pick up Blalock if his option is declined which appears likely. Blalock has his problems, he is not a good defender, and you are gambling that he can give 500+ at-bats. Blalock does however kill right handers, and can be had on a short term deal because of those injuries. So my infield would be: 1B: Fielder, 2B:Weeks, 3B:Blalock, SS: Escobar Hall could be traded if we land Blalock. I am not saying just give him away, but if someone is willing to take on his contract(not likely) then you have to do it. Hall would be nice insurance, but 6.8 would be too much for a platoon partner/ super-sub, who cant start against 80% of right handers.
  15. Another one that I liked and thought shold have got it was the "I love this basketball teams" it was thought up by jason Zimdars in the espn contest. Inspiration came from Toby Keiths restaraunt in OKC called "Toby Keiths I love this Bar and Grill"
  16. I think Green will be the one to go, but I am hoping Brantley ends up being the guy. Unless he develops more power he will not be able to sustain his walk rate. If the power does not come he is limited to center field, which at this point in time he can not play all that well from what I am hearing. Cain, and LuCroy have much higher ceilings, as Cain is a 5 tool type player, and LuCroy plays the most valuable position on the field, and plays it pretty well.
  17. To not pick up a center fielder who has an ops+ of 122, because he might not be clutch enough would be a very big mistake. I do not think that is true either, this year he has a .241 BA with RISP, which is about 15 points lower than his BA, but from 05 through 07 he did very well with RISP, hitting 275 with RISP in 07, and over 300 in 06 and 05. It is most likely just a fluke thing.
  18. The only change I would make, would be to trade Hardy for some young pitching(i.e. Sanchez) and have escobar take over. Gamel could also take over for billy at third if his defense improves enough to be passable.
  19. Lincecum, and Cain are pretty much untouchable, so the brewers would have to add some other nice peices in order to get cain for Hardy. One starter from the Giants that interests me is Jonathan Sanchez. San Fransisco finally gave him a defined role this year, and he has looked very good as a full time starter. Sanchez strikes out almost 1 batter per inning, and does not give up alot of homeruns despite not having a great groundball rate. Sanchez is a legitamite #3 starter and if he improves his control he could be a top of the rotation guy. The giants as everyone knows are desperate for offense, and if Lowry comes back okay they will have room to move sanchez. I think getting Sanchez, and Brian Wilson for Hardy, Pena, and someone like Nelson who could help them offensivley right away would be a good deal for both teams. Our rotation would not be what it is this year, but it would be good and if Sanchez, Gallardo, and Parra all play up to their potential we would have a formidable rotation, without having to give up any of our top prospects, and have Fielder for another year.
  20. Don Money, Angel's coach commented on his game calling and pitch framing abilities, so I would take his word since he sees him every day. Sometimes your perception of a player is off from reality, esspecially if you are just going off of a few games that you saw. Chances are Salome was just having a good day, because from all acounts he is not near ready yet defensivley. I think Angel very well could be a very good, even great catcher given his skills, he has a rocket for an arm and is pretty athletic, which does not mean fast necessarily. He is only 22, so he should have at least a couple more seasons to show that he can play behind the plate. If Salome is even average back there, with his stick he could be a perennial all-star.
  21. Yes if Hall has no value, and would be only a salary dump, then I see no reason in trading a guy who could still pump out 35 homeruns. It makes more sense to pay him the money next year and hopes he plays like he has been for the past month or so. I still have to think that he would have value to a team like the royals, orioles, or blue jays, who desperatley need a shortstop. Hall could be one of the top offensive shortstops, and he is not terrible defensivley at short either.
  22. "Good, he's not even that good of a rightfielder, let alone cf. Not sure why people are so anxious to shift him to center. I think our next Cf needs to be a leadoff option. In my opinion Hart is a better option in center than in right field. Corey has pretty good range, nothing spectacular, but he has the athleticism to cover alot of ground, and in center you get a better read on the ball then in right field anyway. The biggest reason Corey should not be in right field is that he has a weak arm, in right field your arm strength is more important than any other position in the outfield. Left field would be an option for Corey, but then you would have to move Braun, and Corey's bat would not be that special playing in left field. Center field seems like the best option for Corey Hart to me.
  23. Jim Callis in his q and a piece for baseball america, thinks that Padres first rund pick, Allan Dykstra is the only first rounder who might not sign. "Twelve first-round picks remain unsigned as of now, but I think the only one who might not come to terms is Wake Forest first baseman Allan Dykstra. Dykstra and the Padres had agreed on a $1.4 million bonus, but a subsequent physical has the club concerned about his right hip, which required surgery in high school. San Diego is worried that it's a degenerative condition, while Dykstra got a second opinion from Angels medical director Dr. Lewis Yocum, who cleared him. Add in the Scott Boras Corporation, which is advising Dykstra, and it may be difficult to resolve the situation to both sides' satisfaction. " Callis also speculates pirates second round pick Tanner Scheppers, whom Callis says would have been a top ten pick had he not injured his shoulder, also may not sign. Other players mentioned as possible non-signing's are sandwich picks Conor Gillaspie(giants), and Jeremy Bleich(yankees).
  24. How open is Baltimore to adding salary for next year. The reason I ask is because Hall seems like the most likely candidate to be moved unless someone blows us away in a deal for Hardy, or Weeks. If the Orioles would take on Hall's contract I would not mind seeing Guthrie, or maybe even Cabrera if he shows signs of life in the rotation next year. With Guthrie we may have to throw in some filler like Nelson who would have to be exposed to waivers if he does not make the team next year anyway to get him, but I would be okay with a deal of Hall, Nelson, and either Gwynn, or Iribarren for Guthrie and either a middle relief type guy that has an option or two left, or a low level prospect with some potential.
  25. The D-backs were rumored but according to Dbacks.com writer Steve Gilbert, a deal is highly unlikely. This is not really news, since any deal involving him is highly unlikely. The Mets have done all but say they do not want him on the team. Pat Gillick the Phillies GM denies interest siting the fact that they have no room for him on the team. The dodgers according to MLBtraderumors, the dodgers would deal for him if the Red Sox take Andruw Jones back.
