  1. Really not that important but I thought the minimum salary was generally around 400K. That really would not change the total salary much, probably just a little over 70 million.
  2. Hughes is not going anywhere unless he is part of a deal for a top player. I think a deal will get done, both GM's are just trying to get the maximum value they can out of it right now. My guess is that the brewers will get a second player in the deal, and not have to give up any money. That player will not be someone like Kennedy, and certainly not Hughes. An example would be the Brewers getting McCutchen, and Cabrera for Cameron.
  3. If Antanasio was willing to up the payroll to allow Melvin to offer a 100 million dollar deal to Sabathia, I am sure Melvin would get the ok to get Peavy at 50 million over 3 years. Peavy would in my mind anyway qualify as a special case. It does not matter though because Peavy is not going to waive his no trade clause to come to beautiful Milwaukee.
  4. 10 million for an above average center fielder is really not bad at all, in fact I think that is a fairly good deal. The Brewers are not going to be able to replace Cameron's production through free agency, and Cabrera is certainly not as good as Cameron. If the Brewers do not get a deal that is fair they have no reason to trade Cameron. Also Kennedy is much better than most are giving him credit for, I do not think Kennedy will be in the deal, unless the Brewers send something else their way.
  5. I really do not like sports radio in general, but certain people on 1250 just make me angry for some reason. I generally do not agree with the "old school" baseball guys who preach small ball, but I actually like Tim Allen, even though I only agree with about 40% of his views. Sparky, and Doug Russell on the other hand is like listening to nails on a chalk board. Both of them, Sparky mainly say some outlandish things, and anyone who disagrees is crazy, no matter how little proof they have. That guy that used to play football, has no idea what he is talking about when it comes to baseball, but yet they allow him to talk about the Brewers for an hour. I like Homer though. That is because I agree with alot of the things he says. If I did not I am sure he would have a little bit of the Sparky effect on me. At least Homer uses stats to back up what he says sometimes though.

  7. Haudricourt said that the yankees were trying to throw him into the deal, Melvin did not ask about him. I tend to believe that more than the alternative. What interest could Melvin have in Igawa?
  8. What reason is there for picking up Padilla? There are at least 5 guys on the free agent market who would give you the same production for less money, and not cost any players.
  9. Why all the love for Peralta? I seriously want to know, I have never seen him pitch, I know he throws hard, and is young but that is all I know. I imagine there is something else there for him to be ranked above Green who not many seem to like outside of wisconsin, Aguilar, and Fredrickson.
  10. Cordero seemed to do all right for us. A half year of Carlos Lee, and Nelson Cruz for 1 1/2 years of a shutdown closer, a decent 4th outfield platoon mate, Nix, and the picks from Cordero seems like a decent trade to me.
  11. John Daniels has made worse moves. The Rangers do not have unlimited money so in order to pick up a guy like Sheets they need to clear salary. I agree that Millwood is not the guy to move in order to accomplish that, but the Rangers might think differently.
  12. The Rangers probably just want to get rid of the money which is why they want to trade them. Padilla can be replaced for much less money with Free Agency, because he is a poor pitcher. I would however not mind aquiring Millwood for the right price. Millwood seems like a good candidate for a turnaround with a change of scenery, for that matter any pitcher would improve when leaving the Rangers and that park. Millwood has had a high ERA the last couple of years, but other than 2007 his other numbers have stayed consistent. Millwood hardly ever walks people allowing 2.5 walks or less in 3 of the last 4 years. His highest HR/G number with Texas was .98, which is saying something in that ballpark. I know alot of people do not like the FIP stat, but other than 2007 his highest FIP in the last 5 years was 4.07 in 2008. I think if we were to aquire him you could reasonably expect an ERA in the low to mid 4's, with a decent amount of innings. I cannot imagine he would cost that much to get either. Just to clarify Millwood would not be my first choice. Say that the Brewers fail to get any of the better free agent options like Johnson, and Sheets, I would much rather get a guy like Millwood for 11 million, than waste the money on Garland, or Perez. Bottom line is the Brewers could do much worse things than trade for Millwood.
  13. Alot of people including myself thought that Tampa had a pretty poor rotation after 1-3 spots. Regardless it is still very early, I am sure Melvin is not going to say exactly who he is going after. The only thing that you can say with some certainty is that we will not go after Hoffman. If Melvin was to say that our 3rd base situation is a mess, and he is desperate to get a new third baseman, what good would that do?
  14. I have been on the wigginton bandwagon since the trade deadline in 2007. Wigginton absolutley kills lefties.
  15. Who is speculating that the two teams are talking about Fielder? Philips and Kruk?
  16. Well they got everett so their need for a utility infielder is less now. Even if they could use Billy, I cannot imagine they have muh money to spend. The deal would have to be exchanging bad contracts, and we have a use for Billy.
  17. The cubs think the price is too steep? Hendry must know something I dont.
  18. Anthony Castrovince backs up the 2 year, plus option deal with the indians, pending a physical of course. Here is his original report from the MLB mainsite.
  19. Steve Phillips, is backing up what most people are thinking, that quote "Theres nothing to a Jeff Francouer- for- Zach Grienke swap between the Braves and Royals."
  20. The Padres would be getting 5 players in the deal not just Marshall, Olsen, and Happ. The Cubs would also be sending another player or two San Diego's way, probably Vitters and another player.
  21. Assuming the Yankees are taking on most, if not all of Hall's contract what could the Brewers expect in return? Would someone like J.B. Cox, or Alan Horne be too much?
  22. I would not get too worried yet, as Hendry has not approved yet, and I am sure no one knows the exact players who are going. I would say any deal will involve the Cubs giving up Vitters to the Padres, and Pie to the orioles. Other than that it is all speculation. Kevin Hart, Sean Marshall, Ronny Cedeno, Angel Guzman, Mark DeRosa, and godforbid Jason Marquis are other players that could be involved but no one knows for sure.
  23. From this article it appears that a 3 , maybe even 4 team deal is somewhat close that would send Peavy to the Cubs. The other teams that could be involved are the orioles and phillies. The cubs also might be able to rid themeselves of Jason Marquis through this deal. Just to make it clear, Hendry has not approved the deal, but Towers seems somewhat hopeful, saying that a deal could "happen quick." if the cubs agree to take on all of Peavy's contract, which I never thought was an issue. Here is a link to mlbtrade rumors which has all the various rumors of players that could be involved in this proposed deal.
  24. Astros.com is reporting that Twins appear interested in Tejada, the writer speculates that if the Twins give up one of their young starters the Astros would be willing to eat a large chunk of Tejada's salary. Edit: one of the twins blogs is saying that Twins assistant GM Rob Antony met with the media, and when they brought up the Tejada rumor, "his facial expression said everything you need to know." It appears that is not happening, apparently teams that need shortstops do not even want him.
  25. According to David O'Brien the Braves have shown interest in J.J. Hardy. Melvin has shown that he has very little interest in moving Hardy, so I would imagine the Braves would have to blow us away. I dont see the Braves giving up Heyward, or Hanson though since they were very reluctant to put them in the Peavey deal.
