  1. Latroy Hawkins was Designated for assignment by the yankees yesterday to make room for Damaso Marte. I think he would be a great addition to the bullpen, taking over for Mota. If I understand it correctly he would only cost us the league minimum if he clears waivers and does not accept an assignment to the minors. Hawkins has not had the best results ERA wise this year, but he is pitching in what is the toughest division in all of baseball, and has pretty good periherals. He would for sure be an upgrade over Mota, and if he does not work out we just cut him, and give the spot to Dillard.
  2. According to John Heyman, the mariners are asking for Melky Cabrera, and Brett Gardner, for Jarrod Washburn. The Yankees are willing to eat all of his remaining salary. If Lee Pelekoudas, Seattle's interim GM can pull off both Cabrera, Gardner, and not eat any of Washburns salary he should be given a 10 year contract, and named executive of the year.
  3. I like the idea of Teahan even better if he is playing in right field. Corey Hart could handle center field, where his bat would be in the top 3, and his arm would not be as big of a detriment. Teahen has a pretty strong arm from what I can tell, and decent range. As far as his offense goes, he is only getting on base at a .313 clip which is low for him, and will come up. So even if he is not OPSing 850 if he is getting on base at a 340 clip or higher he would be a great addition to the lineup, whether it be in right field or third base.
  4. I was looking through the official pick/signing thread, and I could not help notice that alot of players after round 30 had not signed yet. I was just wondering two things. First of all, how many players that sign are considered a good amount for a team, is 40 players too many to expect. Secondly, obviously there are issues with Lawrie, that prevented him from signing right away, but is it unusual for players to sign later. At this stage in the game with only about three weeks left to sign players, is it unlikley to sign the remaining players, or do alot of players sign with a week to go.
  5. Manny will not agree to a deal unless he is given a new contract by the team that trades for him. I really do not see the Brewers being able to afford the kind of money that Manny will be looking for, and I do not think it would be a good idea to give him the money he wants either.
  6. Yes Bannister is the guy that is really into sabrmatics. As for Melky, the reason alot of people have hope that he will one day be a very good center fielder is that he has shown over long stretches that he is capable of being very, very good in each of the three seasons he has had any significant time in the big leagues. Melky's biggest problem is consistency, he will go a couple of months where he is terrible, and does not look like he belongs on the field, and then he will go a month where he is an on base machine, and slapping doubles all over the place. If Melky can ever just be somewhat consistent he will go to all-star games. I am not saying he is a hall of fame talent, he isnt, but he has the potential to hit 300 , with 70-80 walks, and a alot of doubles, and triples. That is definatley good enough for an all-star bid. I am not saying he will definatley do that, but there is a chance, and Bannister just has no upside, and is having a very bad year as well, so what is the point.
  7. I found an article through MLBtraderumors.com from the kansas city star, by Bob Dutton. In the article Dutton says that if the Washburn deal does not work out for the yankees that they may look to get Bannister, and Dutton says that Melky Cabrera is the most likely candidate to be coming back. Cabrera has not been having a very good year, he has a line of .250/.306/.351, but he still has the ability to be an all-star. Last year from June through august he showed what he can do hitting .325/.375/.482. Brian Bannister does not strike people out, does not get a ton of groundballs, and has average stuff. This year he has a 5.40 ERA, he is pitching better than that, but still at he does not have a ton of upside. Seems like a low reward high risk deal for the yankees.
  8. Gamel can hit .300, but he just does not have the power to be a great firstbaseman. He could be something like Overbay, a high average, lots of doubles, Gamel will probably have a little bit more pop as far as homeruns go but still not a perenial 30 homerun type of player. I am not saying that Gamel would not have alot of value at first base, but it would be a fraction of his value at third base, or even the outfield esspecially right field if he cant handle third base, which I think he will be able to.
  9. The Red Sox have grown tired of Manny, who has sat out a couple of games that he probably could have played. Theo Epstein was quoted in an article by Ken Rosenthal, as saying "We'd be open to (a trade),We've called around. We've been open to it for 5 1/2 years now." It seems to me that they are shopping him a little more aggresivley than the past couple of years, since he will be gone next year, unless they pick up his option, which seems unlikely. The problem is according to Rosenthal, their is not a great fit. The Red Sox are not going to move him unless they are getting someone who can help them now. The only teams who could give them an outfielder anywhere near Manny Ramirez caliber are probably not looking to add salary, the pirates are not going to give up Bay, the Rockies are not giving up Holliday for him. Ramirez also has 10-and 5 rights so he can block any trade, so the team would have to give him a new deal for him to agree to it.
  10. I dont think that the brewers would get alot more if we traded Prince this off-season, as opposed to next, so I would rather have Prince for 2009, and get a huge deal after 2009. If you move Prince this off-season than Gamel is probably the first baseman, where he does not have the power to be an elite first baseman, at third he could be one of the top 5 players. I know Gamel is not ready yet, but I have heard from many posters here, and reports on Gamel that he has the range to play third, which Braun never did, and a strong arm. So to give up a chance on having one of the best thirdbaseman in the game, just to move arguably your best hitter, to complete a deal that you could do after next season seems a bit foolish.
  11. Oh sorry, yes Bowden had a ton of offers this off-season, and the 2 before that were even better. As for him not being as good as he was the last couple of years, and Torres being a better option, that might be true, but that does not mean he would not be a good signing. Cordero's deal will not be very much because of the injury concern, if we could get him to agree to something in the range 1-2 million with incentives based on games played, that could have a very high payoff.
  12. Weeks for 4.3 innings of Cordero? I would think that was a good non-trade.
  13. The Nationals GM Jim Bowden, has gone on record yesterday stating that they will non- tender their former closer Chad Cordero. Cordero, tore his labrum, and could be ready by next spring training. I dont think anyone would blame Bowden for not offering him arbitration, but to go public with it, when you are so far away from that date seems very odd. In the article Bowden says "We hope that Chad Cordero re-signs with us, but based on his surgery, our interest would be a low base salary with incentives," The Brewers have expressed interest in Cordero this past off-season, but supposedly did not want to part with Rickie Weeks in the deal. If we could get Cordero on an incentive laden deal, I would like that very much.
  14. The hardballtimes posted an article by Josh Kalk, entitled Seeing Stars. In the article Mr. Kalk profiles Alcides Escobar, Angel Salome, Cole Gillespie, and of course Mat Gamel.
  15. Huston Street is making 3.3 million this year, which is his first arbitration year, so he is under control through 2010, with two more arbitration years. Duke is making 1.2 million this year, and had just over 4 years of service time at the begining of the year according to cots. The word on Street is that he is going to cost a ton, I could see a team having to give up more to get him, then we did to get Sabathia. Before the season started John Heyman reported that the A's asked for Joba Chamberlain from the yankees, and Street has done nothing to diminish his value.
  16. mlbtraderumors, posted a link to an article by Jeff Blair, of globesports, which quotes Holliday as saying that he does not want to go anywhere. In the article Holliday says: "There's no chance if I have anything to say about it that I'm going anywhere. I can understand maybe disappointment with the way we're going. But as long as it's up to me, I'm staying."
  17. These types of players will not have a huge affect, but they will not cost much either, I am thinking along the lines of a low minors guy, or a guy like Nelson who probably does not have a very high ceiling. I do not think that guys like John Rauch, Brian Fuentes, and Damaso Marte are going to give you more than maybe 1 extra win over the middle relief type pitchers. Yet their price tag will be much higher, with at least 10 teams in on Fuentes, and probably close to that many on Marte and Rauch.
  18. I do not want either Shouse or Stetter getting near a right handed hitter, but SHouse has been great against lefties. The biggest need I see is another bullpen arm, preferably a lefty who can get righties out as well which would allow Shouse to face far less righties hopefully none. The only other thing that I can see is a useful left handed, or switch hitting bat (e.g. Ray Durham) bat off the bench.
  19. If we trade for Durham, I like the idea of Yabu being thrown in, he would definatley be an upgrade over Mota. My favorite player to get though, would be Brian Tallet from the Blue Jays, who have incredible depth in the pitching department. Tallet is a left hander who has very even splits against both left and right handed hitters. Tallet has a 7.6 K/9, walks 3.6/9, 40.9 GB%, and allows .72 homeruns per game. Jason Frasor from the Blue Jays, and Chad Bradford are two others that I like.
  20. No I probably would not be better than schroeder, but I do not think that I should be the standard by which color commentators are judged.
  21. It would not affect the super 2 status, but if the brewers want to wait a month to call him up like we did with Braun, and the Rays did with Longoria to possibly add an extra year of control it would have an affect I believe. I could be wrong, as I am not very well versed in how all of this exactly works. If I am correct though I would not want to lose a year of Gamel, just to have him pinch hit, since he probably would not get many, if any starts at third base.
  22. He will not stand trial until march, so nothing from a legal standpoint is holding him back. And again how is he a broken down man, when he OPS's over 1.00, and has an OBP of .480. If that is broken down, I hope to God the brewers get like 12 broken down hitters, we would be unstopable.
  23. I just cant belive that none of the 30 teams thinks that a guy that will get on base half of the time, and can be had for peanuts is not worth the risk. Age may have caught up with him, but even an over the hill bonds, is still one of the 20 best hitters in the game. From a PR standpoint it is probably not the best move, but a playoff berth would cure that instantly.
  24. I cant see Stocker, since all he can do is run, Gwynn could fill that role, and actually swunt for a base hit. I have to imagine that Nelson is a lock, as well as Difelice, Dillard, and Gwynn as well. Beyond that Nix, Pena, and Iribarren could also get called up. I doubt that Gamel will be called up, I am sure the brewers want to wait until next year, when he is a regular to start his arbitration clock.
  25. Bill reminds me of a video game announcer. It seems like he has 10 phrases that he just repeats over and over again.
