  1. Johnbriggs, I think you have to look ahead at all times to run a successful major league franchise, esspecially when you are a mid-market team like the Brewers. I would not say that LaPorta, and Gamel are untouchable, but only if we were getting someone that could help us for the next couple of years, like Zach Greinke, who is not getting traded this year. You also said that you dont know how good a player is until he reaches the majors. Well that is somewhat true, it is a safe bet that these two will be at the very least above average hitters. AA pitching is not that far away from major league hitting. If these guys were still in A ball, I would be much less reluctant to trade them. You have the potential to have two very special hitters under your control for far less than market value for 6 years. In my mind that is not worth 2 months of Sabathia.

  4. This is not the Brewers only shot at the playoffs, if we however trade for Sabathia it would greatly reduce our chance at a playoff birth for the next 3-4 years. In order to get Sabathia, for two months, we would have to give up one of Gamel or Laporta, and a couple of other nice prospects(i.e. Gillespie, Braddock, Pena, Salome, Lucroy, etc). I am not a fan of giving up top tier prospects for 2 months of any player no matter how good he is. Sabathia does not ensure a playoff birth, and giving up prospects of that caliber just is not worth it in my opinion. I would be a much bigger fan of going after a guy like Harden, if the price is right. Harden has a ton of injury problems, but if we could give up a lower level gem, such as Jeffress, in replace of Gamel, or Laporta, I would rather see that. Harden would be around next year, if we so choose, for 7 million. If that is not possible than just pick up one of the second level rentals, such as Maddux, or Wolf. Guys like tha t would only require the Gwynn's of the world, so we are not mortgaging our future.

  7. I am not sure that the A's are as active in trying to trade Harden, now that they are right in the middle of a playoff race. As long as the A's are in it, Harden will be very expensive to aquire. Earlier in the year, the A's were reportedly asking for Ian Kennedy from the Yankees, with Harden pitching as well as he has in years, and the A's in contention, the Brewers would have to give up just as much to aquire Harden, as we would Sabathia.
  8. The best person to compare, what Corey could expect would be Alex Rios in my opinion. Alex Rios who was entering his first arb year over the off-season got a 7 year, 70 million dollar deal, with a club option for 2015. Corey will not have accumulated as much service time, and Rios got a very rich deal, so I do not expect Hart to get that much but something similar. Just as a guess I would say something like 5 years, and 45 million, with an option year.
  9. A.J. Burnett, has the ability to opt out of his deal, after this season, and in all likelyhood he will. That means if the Blue Jays are out of it they will be looking to deal him. Burnett, has not been having a great season, he is posting a 4.98 ERA, and his high walk rate from 07, has carried over to 08. On the bright side, his homerun rate is way down, which other than the walk rate, was the only alarming thing about 07. All in all, he is a solid #2/3 starter when healthy. What about sending Taylor Green, and Zach Braddock to the Blue Jays, for A.J. Burnett, asuming the Jays are willing to move him. It would not have to be a two month rental either, Sheets is likely to walk, and Cameron, Gagne, Turnbow, Mota are all going to be off the books as well. That is alot of free money, I would asume they would look into getting one of Burnett, Lowe, and Perez during the off-season anyway.
  10. There really are very few second base prospects around the league. Teams will generally keep middle infielders at short, until they have proved beyond a doubt, that they will not be able to play there. Mike Bell, currently playing in huntsville, is a guy that I like though, he has pretty good pop in his bat, especially for second base. Iribarren, might be able to be an everyday second baseman sometime, as well, you do not need to hit a ton to play at second. As for Rickie, it is still too early too give up on him, I think. Weeks has played through some injuries, and still has plenty of time to reach his amazing potential. Even if he does not become what he can be, he is not as bad at the plate as he has been this year.
  11. As I said, I probably had unfair expectations. I also said that he is not having a bad year.I was just expecting he would dominate West Virginia, like he did Helena.
  12. Tim Dillard, to me is the biggest suprise. Dillard has never struck out alot of batters, so I never was as high on him as others. After Tim Dillards poor 2007 season, I had lost the little hope I ever had for him. Then out of nowhere he comes back throwing his sinker in the mid 90's, and looks like he could stick around for a while in the majors. Brad Nelson is another guy that suprised me, 2007 was an okay year for him, but he looks like a very solid bench player. As far as disappointments go, Ford, Brewer, and Gindl. I am not really suprised by any of these guys, but I really thought Ford, and Brewer, would look very good, mainly because both were repeating levels. Gindl, is not having a bad year, it is just that I had expected, probably unfairly, that he would dominate West Virginia, the same way he dominated Helena.
  13. It would not make sense to move Billy right now, his value is as low as it will go, and what we are going to get back, will not improve the big league team. Billy still kills lefties, and as much as I like Branyan, he has struggled in the past, so we need the insurance. Nieman definatley would not make me move Billy. Nieman is not what he once was coming out of college. He has been injured constantly, and does not have the same stuff he once did, because of the injuries.
  14. Melvin could always carry 15 pitchers.
  15. Taschner has only had 1.146 years of service, so if that is correct, than he would be under control for 4 more years, after this, right? Anyway, if we were to make a deal for him I cant see a reliver with a career 4.74 ERA getting a ton back. Probably not more than a C level prospect.
  16. Taschner, is not a loogy, by any stretch of the imagination. This year he has not fared very well against righties, but over his career, he has pretty good results against righties. I cannot find the career splits, but according to Baseball Prospectus, he has a better K rate against righties career, then against lefties. The fact that he can get out righties makes him much more valuable than Shouse, in my opinion. Well obviously it's my opinion, because I wrote it, so why I have to put that in, I dont know.
  17. Harden has not logged over 50 innings since 2005. I would not give up anything for Harden, if you get 100 innings out of him this year, it would suprise me.
  18. The brewers probably are going to be looking for a starting pitcher, if we are in it still come july. Other than Maddux, Millwood would be my favorite of the pitchers that are for sure available. Last year was a down year for Millwood, the biggest reason, I think was his walk rate which rose to 3.3 per nine, and his K rate, which was 6.0 per 9. This year, Millwood has got his walk rate back down to normal for him, at 2.7, his K rate is at 5.7 so that is cause for concern. Millwood makes 8.5 this year, 11 next, and 12 in 2010. Which even if he posts an ERA in the mid 4's is still not that bad if you get 180-200 innings out of him. I am wondering if a package of GIllespie, and Hammond would be enough to get him if we took on all of his salary. Is that too much, or too little. Also am I crazy for thinking that he would be a valuable part of the rotation, consider the park he pitches in, the little problems he pitched through last year, and the innings he logs.
  19. Even then his stick probably does not have much value.
  20. I really dont think that Gwynn would be worthless in a trade at all. Last year at the deadline, and this off-season a couple of teams showed interest in him. The Padres, White Sox, and Rangers all showed quite a bit of interest. I think Gwynn could bring back a back of the rotation guy, or a #3 rental. I could see the Padres giving up Maddux if it is towards the end of July. We would only have Maddux for a couple of months, so it is not like we would have to give up a ton. Wolf is another option. Hall would be a little trickier. Hall's value has to be very low considering his struggles for the past year and a half. Not many teams are going to want to give up anything for a guy who has not hit good enough to play third since 2006, and is owed 6.8 million next year, and over 8 in 2010.
  21. Billy made 17 errors at shortstop in 2006, that is 4 more than JJ made last year. Errors really are not a good judgment of a player, because like Bill James(I think it was Bill James) said you have to do something right to make an error. Billy might make more errors than JJ would at shortstop but that is due largley to the fact that he gets to so many more balls than JJ. If you ask me JJ would be a better fit for third base, while Bill Hall is a much better shortstop, where your range is the most important aspect of your defensive game. The problem is that Hardy does not have the bat to play third base, but the last couple of years Billy has not looked much better.
  22. WHy does everyone seem to dislike Prince so much recently? The guy nearly won an MVP last year, and now everyone wants to trade the guy, when you still have him under control for 3 more years. Prince will start hitting very soon, Ryan Howard struggled early in the season last year as well. Howard was trying to alter his swing in order to avoid that same shift they use on Prince. Prince will snap out of it very soon.
  23. How is Nelson's defense at third?
  24. Does anyone know roughly how many pitches Jeffress was at when he imploded. I have heard from a few people that he loses alot on his pitches at around the 70 pitch count.
