  1. The article that you are talking about is from the new york times, and it made very little sense. According to the times they have a deal in place that is fair, but do not want to make the deal because Cameron would bat in the bottome third of the order, with Nick Swisher and together they would have over 300 strikeouts. The other reason the times says that the Yankees do not think the deal makes sense is because "teams that win tend to have players in their primes, not in decline." Cashman and company are much smarter than that, this smells like garbage fed to the times in order to get a better deal.
  2. If he is throwing 84 chances are he will not make the team, and be sent to nashville. There is barely any risk in this deal, if he is healthy and performs he gets paid, if he isnt he sits in Nashville and collects a minor league salary.
  3. Saito reportedly turned down an incentive laden 2.5 million dollar deal from the dodgers, who have not shown any interest in upping their offer. I do not expect them to either they have quite a few options at the back of their pen, and money to burn, so they can afford more stable players. Saito seems like a very good gamble for Melvin, if he throws an extra million guarenteed at Saito, with 2-3 million in incentives I would imagine they could lure him over here.
  4. Yeah there are some very nice players in your proposed deal, that was just my reaction from the title. I personally would not trade Fielder this off-season unless the deal is centered around a young pitcher that already has had success in the majors, for example Ervin Santana, or James Shields.
  5. I was terrified when I first saw the title, thinking that this deal was done. It is not that Bowden is not a very nice piece, but others screams filler to me.
  6. According to the baltimore sun eleven teams contacted Daniel Cabrera, with one team offering him a multi year deal. One would have to imagine that the Brewers were likely one of those teams. I just hope we were not the team that offered him the multi-year deal. I would not mind picking him up on the cheap, because he has loads of potential. A multiple year deal just seems too risky.
  7. I really like the new design, it will be nice not to have to go through so many different pages to find the different splits you are looking for. One question though, does any one know if the minors baseball reference will use a different design? I assume that some of the data will not be available for minor league players, but the minors site could use alot more data.

  9. There is a report from yankees blog that says "there were reports that kei Igawa was involved but that may no longer be the case." I do not know anything about the guy that wrote it, but I hope that this is true. McCalvey says that the talks are at a stalemate which could validate the report about Igawa not being in the deal. Maybe Melvin came to his senses and told Cashman he will not give him salary relief in any form. I can only hope.
  10. From what I have seen it would not be just two players, it would be Cabrera, plus Igawa to allow us to get another prospect from the yankees. It is either Igawa or money, supposedly. There is always the possibility that Cashman is just trying to play hardball with Melvin. I really do not see any reason that Melvin should have to take on part of Igawa's contract, or pay Cashman money in order to get another prospect. That other prospect according to a report by the post will not be a pitcher on the 40 man. Like others have said Melvin must have another deal lined up, or Antanasio must be imposing a stricter budget. Then again there is always the possibility that Melvin really likes Cabrera. Either way every day I am hoping more and more this deal does not get done.
  11. The Philidelphia Phillies re-signed Jamie Moyer to a two year deal, according to a press release on the phillies mainpage. Moyer, who will be 46 next season pitched 196 innings with an ERA of 3.71. The Brewers were rumored to have talked to Moyer as well.
  12. John Heyman points out that the yankees want the Brewers to pick up some of Cameron's contract, or take on some of Igawa's contract. Igawa is not the other player in the deal, he is basically salary relief for the yankees. He has negative value for the Brewers and both sides realize this.
  13. I was not saying that PETCO was not a very big factor in his success. All I was trying to say was that Home/Road splits are no where near as effective as park adjusted stats, when trying to figure out how a player would fare on a different team, with a different home park.
  14. While PETCO has certainly helped Peavy I do not think it is fair to use his home/road splits, esspecially career h/r splits to project his future numbers. Alot of pitchers pitch better at home regardless of whether it is a hitters, or pitchers park, certainly PETCO helps but that might not be the entire story. Also those are his career numbers, so his 2003 season where he was merely above average goes equally into the equation with last years numbers, which is really not fair. There are many other factors that go into it which just cannot be acounted for. If we are trying to figure out what kind of numbers he would put up in Milwaukee then using park adjusted numbers would be much more effective. In the end it probably does not matter much, because it is a bunk rumor.
  15. Now that Cameron may be traded for Cabrera, I think Baldelli makes more sense than ever. Melky has a 727 career OPS vs righties, and a 648 career OPS vs lefties, so he seems like a good candidate to be platooned. Baldelli has been very good against lefties his entire career with a line of 296/347/494. Obviously with Baldelli the main thing is health, I think despite his disease he could handle the right handed side of a platoon, and be one of the better 4th outfielders in the game. If Baldelli comes back totally healthy, he is also most likely a better option than Melky against right handers as well.
  16. According to Cots McClung made 750 K last year, and is up for arbitration this off-season.
  17. I could see that, maybe the Brewers would have to add a decent prospect into the deal. If Melvin was able to pull off a deal with Hall, and Rolen as the centerpieces I would be ecstatic. I think Rolen did very well last year for what I expected of him, a .780 OPS from third base with excellent defense is very good in my book. He will not give you 550 PA anymore, but if I had to chose between a platoon of Hall/Lamb for 7.2 million, or Rolen for 11 I would go with Rolen.
  18. I thought now that we have much more information as far as what the Brewers want to do, are working on, and what players are available, and will cost, that this would be a good time to bring this thread back up. My revised moves would be, Cameron to the Yankees for Melky Cabrera, and Daniel McCutchen. Sign Randy Johnson for 7 mil, plus incentives, sign Rocco Baldelli for 1 mil plus incentives to platoon with Cabrera, and sign Takashi Saito to a 3.5 mil plus incentives deal. So the roster would look like this C)J.Kendall, 1B) P.Fielder 2B)R.Weeks 3B) B.Hall/M.Lamb SS) J.J. Hardy LF)R.Braun CF)M.Cabrera/R.Baldelli, RF)C.Hart Bench: C)M.Rivera, 2B/OF) Iribarren, 4C)B.Nelson Rotation: 1)R.Johnson, 2)Y.Gallardo, 3) M.Parra, 4) D.Bush, 5) J.Suppan Bullpen: MR)T.Dillard, MR)T.Coffey, MR)M.Stetter, MR)T.Saito, SU)S.McClung, SU)C.Villanueva, CP)D.Riske I do not think Riske is the best reliever out of those players, but in my mind McClung, and VIllanueva have more value when they are able to pitch multiple innings, an opportunity closers rarely get. The bench also is very lacking, but I just could not think of a decent middle infielder that would be worth aquiring. All together that roster would cost roughly 68 million, which is not counting any incentives that Johnson, Saito, and Baldelli could earn in their hypothetical contracts.
  19. No I am not assuming that Hardy or Escobar will be traded, I just think it would be silly to use up service days on Escobar to have him be a reserve. I have soured on Iribarren after last year, if he has a good spring training then there is no harm in giving him a shot, but I would just feel comfortable with another infielder on the bench, besides Hall on his off-days. I was under the assumption that it would be a soft platoon at third like it was last year, with Hall getting to start against weaker right handers. Even if it is a strict platoon which I prefer, I do not feel comfortable with Hall starting more than 10 games at short, and second against right handers. However if there is nothing else out there, Hall is the best option unfortunatley.
  20. The Pirates have shown interest in Turnbow, but have not signed him. Turnbow will most likely not sign with anyody until after he works out for teams in mid-january. On top of the Tigers, and Pirates, the Giants, and Rockies have shown interest in him as well. If he ever regains control, and gets that breaking ball back he could have alot of success again. Granted that is a huge if, regardless of how he ended his tenure here in milwaukee, I wish him the best, and hope he finds success again.
  21. I cannot imagine the Brewers see anything in Igawa. If the yankees require us to eat some of Cameron's salary in order to get one of their top 20 prospects included in the deal, Igawa with the yankees paying half of his salary could be a good alternative to Melvin paying some of Cameron's salary.
  22. If the Brewers do indeed go into the season with Hall, and Lamb platooning at third base, they will need a backup middle infielder. The only option that the Brewers have in the system that I can think of is Adam Heether, who has only started playing shortstop for us last year. So who is available in free agency, or the trade market. Punto re-signed with the twins, and Lopez went to the D-Backs. Even with the lack of quality middle infielders, I cannot think of anyone who I really trust. The only people I can think of that have any value would be Hairston JR. who is not much of a shortstop, and is coming of a fluky year, so will most likely be overpaid, and offered deals by teams that can give him more playing time. After that the only free agents that I see are Counsell, Aaron Miles, Juan Uribe, and maybe Cora could do better than Heether. So who else is available, or are we going to have to go with Heether?
  23. They have Jose Bautista, who kills left handed pitching, but leaves much to be desired against righties. If they were to make that deal for some reason they would have to get a platoon mat for Bautista. So while taking on 3 million over the next two years, they also have to add a third base platoon mate. I could see them making the deal for a less expensive starter, but not Suppan.
  24. The Blue Jays need pitching, but I do not see them having any interest in Suppan. There are plenty of options for the blue jays in free agency, and on the trade market that would give them the same production as Suppan for less money. Rolen is due 22 million over the next two years, he is arguably worth that, Suppan is not anywhere near worth 25 million over the next two years. If the Jays feel confident in Bautista, and wanted to move Rolen I would imagine they dont have to take on a bad contract, to get a decent pitcher for him. If that deal did come up though I would jump at it, no doubt.
  25. I think Melvin is looking more for a starter type than a reliever like J.B. Cox, or Kevin Wheelan. Probably the prospect would be in between Wheelan, and Kennedy. Some starting prospects that the yankees have that could interest the Brewers are Daniel McCutchen, Jeff Marquez, and Humberto Sanchez.
