  1. +1 on 529 accounts! I started a bit late for my kids (oldest was ~8?). They currently have more money from interest/dividends than what I've actually put in. Be aware that there are two "styles" of 529 too. One remains in your name and you can give it to any kid (as MrTPlush mentioned). The other puts it in the child's name and they "own" it at 18 - though you can still manage their account. It is easier to transfer money from child to child in the first type. But the second type "hides" money in another child's name from the FAFSA report for any single child (i.e. the account in Child A's name doesn't get reported as savings for Child B's FAFSA since it is not in your or child B's name). Theoretically, you can still transfer from child to child as necessary, but if the child is 18, they need to sign off on it. I haven't tried this yet. I accidentally chose the second account. I can't say it helped much on my FAFSA, but every little bit... Just to be clear, I'm not advocating either way. I did it by accident, so I've not spent a ton of time comparing the two. Just trying to communicate the differences so you can read up on it before setting up the account. It can't be changed afterwards.
  2. I'm curious if Woodruff and Burnes are still stretching out a bit or not. Woodruff especially seems to be lights-out initially then starts to struggle in the 4th or 5th inning. Likewise with Burnes, but he tends to struggle a bit right away (some, not all games)...once he settles down he locks in until the 4th/5th.
  3. The second is much, MUCH easier. You have most if not all the stuff and now the wisdom to know what is needed and what is not. Three becomes tricky again, because you are outnumbered...
  4. I think I've had the flu shot 2-3 times in my life, but I've only had the flu twice. Last year, work paid us $75 dollars into our HSA to get the flu shot, so I did. I was the only one in my family that didn't get the flu last fall.
  5. I've had the flu vaccine a few times without a fever. 20% seems really high...
  6. Father of 6 kids - currently 20, 18, 16, 14, 13, and 9 We did disposable diapers, but I'd certainly look at cloth diapers now. They've made a lot of improvements. But if you go disposable, forget Pampers and Huggies unless you don't like money. Walmart generic is garbage - but Costco (Kirkland) and Sam's (Member's Mark) are both very good. Walmart potty training pants are the best value. Breast is best, but do what your wife needs to do. Breast or bottle, get a Snuggli. Its a C-shaped pillow that fits around your abdomen and puts the baby in a good feeding position. Helps to feed them no matter what the source, plus you can prop the baby up (back or front) on the floor with them laying on the pillow. Clothes - Once Upon a Child -Forget any other store. High quality (and some lower) used kids clothes up to age 12 or 14. They also have new stuff. Saved us millions. They also have a good selection of used strollers, pack-n-plays, etc... They occasionally have had "dollar" sales and we left with a ton of clothes for a mere pittance. Strollers - look at the wheels! Little wheels bad! The bigger the better. In Europe, strollers have huge wheels and have great mobility. The US seems to be obsessed with small wheels for whatever reason and they stink at going anywhere that isn't hard and flat. Here's hoping you are naming the boys Pauly and Robin!
  7. Any idea what percentage of seats are sold via package compared to single seats? I can imagine that the seats down by the dugouts and behind homeplate are a high percentage of season tickets and/or packages, but otherwise, I'd guess you'd get priority. Then those of us that can only do single tickets would be out of luck (I live too far away for a package deal).
  8. Didn't DJ leave for Cincinnati due to personal reasons and not just money? I left my last job (that I loved) and moved to the Twin Cities area (that I don't love) due to family considerations. My former boss tried to keep me, but knew it wasn't money or job that was driving me away. Some things aren't in a GM's control. I do find this discussion highly ironic as we discuss all the in-house developed pitching (Williams, Woodruff, Burnes) and complain about not being able to develop many position players. My how things have changed...
  9. If they are watching trends in practices - who is getting more reps in a position battle, which backup is getting reps with the #1 team, player interactions - then it is valuable. The fluff pieces where they regurgitate the post-practice interviews - best shape of my life, I'm working on improving everything, I have a new puppy - those are pretty worthless.
  10. I wouldn't mind mixing in a bit of post-up when the threes aren't falling, but the old center-based post up offenses died long ago. If you can post up and make a basket 50% of the time, you only need to shoot over 33% average on a three pointer to have a better chance to score more (i.e. 50% at a 2-pointer and 33% at a 3-pointer both averages 1 point/shot). They are running the best offensive scheme I can remember in Buck's history. They could shake things up a bit by throwing in some wrinkles like the occasional post-up, but not whole-scale changes.
  11. Actually, the projected depth chart ones have been the best so far... Better than the "Bob is in the best shape of his life" that they have been putting out for the last 3-4 weeks. Seems like they hit everyone this year with those articles... The ILB fight is very interesting to me this year. Hopefully Burks stays healthy and "clicks" this year, while Summers could make a big impact simply by improving his tackling skills from last year (preseason showed he was in position, but often bounced off the runner). But my money is on Martin. After reading the post-draft reports on him, I think the Packers got a steal due to Martin's injury and lack of pro-day measurables. Watching these three play in pre-season would've been one major reason to watch.
  12. I think it depends on what you focus on in watching them. If you are watching to see "regular" football and are concerned with wins and losses, then the preseason is worthless. I like watching preseason to see how the young players are developing and who might be legit. Brew4U is right about it being minor league football, but we like watching and discussing our minor league baseball players for the same reason. Its just that this is the only time to actually see those players get a legit time to play.
  13. I'm really missing pre-season games. You need a entire truck of salt when you read the beat writers talk about everyone's play... I want to see it with my own eyes.
  14. I really doubt they will be playing at Miller Park. They won't be playing on the grass (as it won't grow in winter). Putting down a temporary artificial turf makes me think they will have the Philadelphia Eagle's old field (hard, causing injuries, etc).
  15. I watched a decent amount of the second half... even with a blowout, they were uncomfortably sloppy. I was never comfortable watching them play that game despite a large lead.
  16. Sogard breaks up two no-hitters during this series...
  17. I hope this is Gamel heating up and not just facing meatball lefties. Desperately need him.
  18. I wasn't applauding or panning the decision to not draft a WR. You can really only judge it later. I'm merely commenting that given the "perfect storm" of positional need and draft depth made for a huge surprise that none was taken. Things were so bad last year, no matter what you think about individual's development possibilities, nearly everyone expected one WR taken in the top 3 rounds.
  19. I hope this is Garcia heating up and not just facing meatball lefties. Desperately need him.
  20. I hope this is Yelich heating up and not just facing meatball lefties. Desperately need him.
  21. Seeing that we are hovering around 500 (10-11) and hitting horribly, I take that as a positive sign... assuming we have a few guys turn it around.
