  1. the team should not be spending money on relievers at this point The only caveat I would make on that would be to look for cheap rebound players at positions of weakness on the team. Those player that if they do rebound, can be traded off at mid-season (like KRod last year). But even so, the trading market for RPs has been rather weak, so that is probably more in focus of SPs or position players.
  2. The talent poor Brewers, with a need at 1B dropped him off the 40-man. The Cubs just non-tendered him. He might find someone that would give him a minimum MLB deal, but I don't think its a lock. This makes me think that his knees haven't recovered as they should have.
  3. We must spend our FA dollars wisely...
  4. I'm not sure the point of pushing him to MLB when he was struggling at his first crack in AAA. Not to mention his struggles in spring training. Although the lack of Sept call-up is perhaps telling. If he wasn't ready last year doesn't mean he won't ever be ready. Morris isn't a lock to be a great MLBer. He has a low batting average and doesn't walk much. But I think he still has a good chance at being an average 1B.
  5. I've said for a while now that I think maintaining attendance is a higher priority to Attanasio than maximizing wins long-term. Yes, most likely. Its the business-like thing to do. Still an improvement on the Seligs. However, in the Ramirez case, I don't see a better decision that really helps the Brewers either financially or on the playing field. - Ramirez is still a better player than Green (and I like Green) - In a salary dump move, the Brewers eat maybe half his salary and lose a few more million in lost revenues. Still gains some money, but not a significant amount more. I still say their best move is to keep Ramirez and bank on him improving.
  6. I look at things from the perspective of a business owner. Maybe they use that $20MM to pay down debt... If you really want to look at it from a business perspective, then this gets quite complicated: - What is Ramirez's ROI for his $20M salary? If we dump Ramirez and replace him with Green in a cost savings mode, how many fans will we lose next season? How many fewer jerseys will be sold (or current product sent to Good Will)? Is he still a bigger draw than others at signing events or other non-baseball related activities? - Are we at the point of where dumping Ramirez (i.e. getting really nothing in return) would signal to the fans that this is a lost season? What has happened to the Marlin's attendance after they when into salary dump mode? - In the light of Ryan Braun's black eye on the team, would salary dump mode drive us into a bigger PR headache? - Then remember that gaining a new customer (fan) costs 10x the amount of keeping a current customer. - Then of course, there are tax implications for different types of debt. Moving money from one part of the budget to another isn't always a one-to-one prospect. - And don't pretend that we will save all of the $20M either. If we are in salary dump mode, we certainly will have to eat some of that. So there are sunk costs to consider. - Finally, is it wise to sell at the bottom? Or do we take the odds that he rebounds this year? Either to trade him at the deadline or simply help the team draw a crowd with competitive baseball? Yeah, its not so black and white as simply taking his salary to use elsewhere.
  7. It's crazy how different people can look by losing a lot of weight. Yeah, my first thought on the post was, "Who are these two different people and what does it mean?" Congrats RWA12, awesome. My 13 year old was 15 weeks preemie (1lb 4 oz) and it in 8th grade this year right where she should be. Kids don't know what they "shouldn't" be able to do.
  8. As for guys like Prince not aging well, there's really nobody that compares with his body type. Dad?
  9. At least the bring back Russell Branyan talk has stopped. Well, there is all that talk of looking for a power hitting left handed 1B....
  10. On this one, you've got something mistaken for this. [sarcasm]My memory get something wrong? Nah... that never happens![/sarcasm]
  11. My view on Ramirez is dependant on my team view: In order for the Brewers to make the playoffs next year, they need (IMO): - Ramirez (3B) and Hart (1B) to bounce back from injury and hit 800+ OPS - Braun (RF) to return from suspension as the Braun of 2012. - Kh Davis (LF) and Gennett (2B) to be real MLBers (maybe not even as good as now, but average play for their positions) - Gomez (CF), Segura (SS), Lucroy © all to play like 2013 - A little shuffling in the BP, but not much - Lohse, Gallardo, Peralta, Estrada pitching like the end of the year - One more pitcher step up. Its not impossible, but its a bit of a long shot also. So the risk of carrying Ramirez and having him (alone) "tank" our season is pretty low. The upside on the other hand is pretty good. If he is healthy, he is a very good player. And if the Brewers aren't in contention and he is playing well, he is very tradeable next year. So what is the point of selling low on him right now? There is good upside potential for next year and he isn't blocking anyone at 3B (quite the contrary).
  12. I think the only way it happens is if you swap him for another team's baggage. Most of the thread is focused on exactly that. I think people are trying to find other people's baggage that might be more useful to us than Weeks.
  13. I think its a booby prize! :P
  14. I've never personally seen him (even with the Brewers this yeare ), but the knock on him is a weak arm. From what I've heard, he is pretty good as a fielder.
  15. Even more reason to hate.
  16. Is that later than normal? I thought we had overlap to the regular season in the past. If I remember right, we had discussion in the past debating whether someone should be called up or go to the AFL.
  17. Is there a way to track the number of PA with RISP and compare that to other sluggers? Are his intentional BBs up compared to other big sluggers also?
  18. I've been following Kh Davis in the minors all along the way and there have been numerous discussions about why he has such a low prospect rating (I normally on the side of saying he was too lowly ranked). The gist of it is this: He has a weak arm (due to some past injuries/surgeries) and a long swing. But yet, he continues to perform at every stop. I'm not looking at the 950 OPS he just put up in his 136 ABs. I see his 25% K rate, which is pretty much exactly what his MiLB rate was also. If MLB pitchers find a hole in his "long swing", his K rate should spike (still too small of a sample size to judge here). So, if I were the GM, I'd push Braun to RF and install Khris as the everyday LFer. - If he is legit, he probably provides a .850-.900 OPS player - If not, he probably fails to a .750 OPS player and you do a platoon with Gindl. But right now, he has shown too much power and eye at the plate to not let him prove himself.
  19. Has anyone been following how the guys are doing in the AFL? Any standout performances? Disasters?
  20. Well, its their year to have Yuni back, so we can see how Yost uses him next year.
  21. the claim of josh ravin makes it harder for a fringe player to be added to the 40-man . . . Remove Olmsted. Two points: - Wouldn't Ravin be a fringe player? - I would guess that he is going to be this year's Olmsted, including taking his 40-man spot. Because this year's Olmsted didn't look worth keeping around and will probably be released. I can't see the problem here... Giving him a 40-man spot now doesn't mean he will have it in 7 days, let alone the entire offseason. Bring him in, try him out, see if he is worth keeping. If spots do get tight, he can be released. This isn't until death do we part...

  23. Combined with good defense that's a pretty valuable 4th OF, and in this lower offense era wouldn't even be horrible as a starter. With Davis though he has shown enough you really have to see where he can settle in as a player. With the defensive difference I could see some scenarios where Gindl ends up as the better player overall, but Davis could be a .900 OPS guys and you have to give that a shot. I'm agreement with this. I'm not sure why its so important to have a starting OF that is left handed? Its nice, but if the RH player is a better hitter and you have a LH player on the bench, I wouldn't think that would matter much. Playing the law of averages, I wouldn't ever bet on someone taking Stairs' career path; At least in the post steriod era. Not saying Stairs was a user, but in general, very few players develop power in the majors after showing little in the minors. Sure, it can happen, but its uncommon.
