  1. Isn't the deadline tomorrow night at midnight? I have read in reports that Tuesday midnight is the deadline (ie one week before the draft) for DFE candidates. Am I mistaken? Please let me know. Thank you. PS - I hope and pray we can sign Eveland and/or Mannon!
  2. I was reviewing BA's information on the draft, and noticed that Clemson 1b Michael Johnson was considered to be under the control of the Padres, despite being in a D-1 program (Clemson) and not a JuCo. Does anyone know how this loophole existed? Or am I missing something here? Thanks, Greg. From BA: "If the timing is right, San Diego hoped to sign as many as eight of last year?s picks, including its second-round selection, Clemson first baseman Michael Johnson."
  3. Not based on much other than Patrick's review of the prospects and BA's review so far, but here is how I would like to handicap the Brewers draft, assuming average position value (ie taking BA and Patrick's overall rank and fitting it to our selections, #2, #40, #70 and #110) 1st round: If available then Adam Loewen, lhp. Simply put you can never have enough quality arms. One MVP hitter in the line up every day can change a teams fortune offensively, but you need 3-4 stud pitchers to make it far (ie NY, Oak, Atl, and now Cubbies). If not available, then Delmon Young, of. 2nd round: Ideally I would like to see a position player, and I keep reading good things about Tim Battle, of. BA described him as possibly being better than Milledge tools-wise. If not available, I'd like to see Jarrod Saltamacchia, c. Or if we go Weeks/Young with #2 overall, then a lhp like Scott Maine or Jacob Stevens. 3rd round: Lots of position prospects in this slot (65-75 overall ranks), such as Shane Costa, of; Landon Powell (spotlighted today by BA); Daric Barton; Tony (Don't call me Todd) Richie, all three cathcers. If we need a pitcher then Greg Reynolds, rhp, or lhp Josh Banks and Darrin Downs have good write-ups. 4th round: How about former Brewer pick, Josh Smith, rhp. Again lots of others to predict here, depends what we do with 1st-3rd, and who drops. Then to cap it all off, I pray we sign a couple of DFE's, especially Dana Eveland, Adam Mannon. Add these guys to our prospect list and we could go 15-20 deep with quality prospects. Anyway, just some thoughts. Tell me what you think.
  4. Just noticed this from BA's Draft Tracker yesterday... "16. Nick Markakis, lhp, Young Harris (Ga.) JC Markakis appears to be willing to take his chances in the draft after turning down $1.5 million offer from the Reds on Friday; both sides have until the end of the signing period on Tuesday to change course" And, I agree, if he happens to slide down the first round, I don't see him making it out of the Supplemental picks.
  5. BA reports he is likely to go in the first round, I've seen mid to late 1st round. But I've also read that Cincinnati is expected to sign him. From BA: "Lefthanders Adam Loewen and Nick Markakis are the two most significant draft-and-follows this year, and both are expected to be first-round picks if they are not signed by the Orioles and Reds, respectively, by the closed period." Also of note, when BA handicapped the First Round, the following prediction was made, "11/18. INDIANS. Allison, Lubanski and lefthander John Danks are at the top of Cleveland's wish list. If, as expected, the Indians go with a hitter first they'd be more inclined to look at a pitcher 18th, a compensation pick from the Phillies for the loss of free agent Jim Thome. If Cincinnati fails to sign Markakis before the draft, the Indians wouldn't hesitate to take him. Miller is another possibility in that spot. PROJECTED PICKS: Chris Lubanski (11)/Nick Markakis (1http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/glasses.gif ."
  6. Another thought. Since we like to second guess, well at least I do, another mock draft, would be to re-do the Brewers draft after the fact, where you can select any player who was still left on the draft board as the Brewers selection, and see how we compare a wannabe GMs compared to the real crew. Well, just a thought.
  7. I figure it doesn't really matter whether we're #1 or #3 unless there is a "Kerry Wood/ Jr. Griffey" type consensus #1 pick, but that doesn't happen that oftten. I am probably guessing here (Colby, et al. help me out if I'm wrong), but it's likely that there will be a handful of top picks like last year and this year, where no one really stands out alone, so we'll be guaranteed another high potential selection with 1, 3 or even 5. Heck, we got Sheets with #11 I think, Jones was #12.
  8. Jones pitched a great game. 8IP, about 6K. He was throwing about 91 mph, and was very efficient with his pitches. Krynzel had some amazing defensive plays. Threw out a runner at home plate. Corey Hart was up with the bases loaded and one out, and he strikes out on three curve balls, then Ryan Knox gets picked off of third base (so Sanchez isn't the only one) to end the inning. Then Bucky Jacobsen ends the scoreless tie with a base hit in the top of the ninth. Another error later allows Jacobsen to score. Huntsville loses 2-0. Of note, before Barnwell made the last out, DJ Clark was in the on deck circle, but he didn't get his chance tonight.
  9. What an impressive night for the farm teams! They still play baseball in Milwaukee these day? Seriously, though, I was really impressed with the pitching in the minors last night, so I put together a composite line for all four startes: Manning 7.0 5 1 1 2 7 Jones 7.0 2 0 0 1 8 Hall 8.2 4 3 3 1 8 Sarfate 4.0 3 0 0 5 8 Total 26.2 14 4 4 9 31 Edited the BB:K. Unbelievable that three pitchers had 8 K (one only pitched 4 innings!)
  10. Happy Easter all. Since I'm left to spend it alone, I had a lot of time to surf the net and collect some of todays info. AAA: Indianapolis 3, Charlotte 6 - Zocolillo went 3-4, with a 2b - Campos did not fare well, but Buddie took the loss AA: Huntsville 7, Birmingham 6 - Krynzel went 4-5 with 4 singles - Adams get the win after the pen made this one interesting. Link to story: Huntsville Recap A: Beloit 6, Fort Wayne 1 - Wilhemsen and Mendoza combined on the win - Fort Wayne had 5 errors High Desert: Lost a close one 6-5. Had a late rally in the ninth, with DJ Clark having a clutch hit, but an apparently great defensive play robbed the next batter (??) of a hit and got the force out to end it. Boy are HD games fun to listen to on the radio/internet (recommend it if you haven't yet -> just go the HD Mavs website and click on Listen to it Live) Enjoy.
  11. MassBrew will fill in the details, but just a quick update: Luis Martinez goes 6 strong IP, and wins again, as Huntsville defeats Orlando 1-0. So far a very impressive start to the season for Luis. A couple months ago, I talked about some players who were in "make or break" seasons, and Luis has definitely responded so far. Cristian Guerrero, on the other hand, continues to hibernate in April. It would be interesting to see his stat breakdown by months, as far as I recall Cristian get warm in June/July, then fizzles out in Aug/Sept.
