  1. I'm not going to defend Macha, because I am not convinced he's handled the pitching staff terribly well. However, what I'm certain of is that he's been hamstrung by injuries. Unless we're going to blame him for Bush breaking down, or Weeks blowing out his wrist, or the fact that the best his general manager could do was hope adding Braden Looper would offset the losses of CC Sabathia and Ben Sheets enough that the whole burden wouldn't fall on Gallardo, Parra, and Bush. The fact that Macha continues to be required to start Jeff Suppan every fifth day only tells you how many problems we're having. If I were Melvin, I'd look at the pitching coach, but ultimately look in the mirror. He might have done the best he could do during the offseason, but it's blatantly obvious that this team is woefully short of major-league caliber pitchers, and the offense isn't nearly good enough on a consistent basis to make up for it.
  2. Watching the race and tracking the game on ESPN.com, and on the Burns hit, they had this up... Gave me the mental image of Burns standing off second base doing some stretching exercises, which made me chuckle.
  3. Stepping out of the dugout while arguing: automatic suspension Recklessly throwing equipment around like a tantrum-throwing two-year old: no punishment outside of an ejection Makes perfect sense to me.
  4. I agree with this. Lots. You can argue back and forth whether Braun should have gone public with his thoughts (honestly, I'm not sure it's a big deal, but Melvin obviously does), but like I just said, he is probably saying what other guys are thinking. If anything, some may want to thank him for saying it. Even in the cases of guys like Suppan and McClung, it's not like they're so stupid as to think they're not a significant part of the problem. They haven't pitched very well for the most part, and they've put this team in some bad situations that they're not always going to rebound from. Guys might not like being publicly reminded of their struggles, but I doubt it's going to tear the team apart.
  5. I'll freely admit to chuckling at this part, but I think it was the dumbest part of Melvin's risky comments. In the last month, the Brewers have lost 16 games. More often than not, the horrific starting pitching has taken them out of the game early. Yes, there have been exceptions, and the offense has had some clunkers, but trying to stick that on Braun is counterproductive unless you feel that the Brewers should score four runs in the first inning of every game. The other thing Melvin has to realize (for all I know, he gets this totally) is that Braun may not the only guy in the clubhouse who feels this way. Comments like this aren't always just a guy popping off to pop off. Instead, he says what a lot of other guys are thinking.
  6. I know it's been a while since I've been around, and none of you have really missed me, but I'm going to chime in on this lack of fire from Macha... I was more than willing to stick up for Ned when he came out to stick up for his players, but what good did it do him in the end? It may have made the players think "Man, he's on our side here", but it didn't buy us much of anything from the umpires. Ron Gardenhire gets tossed on what sometimes seems like a weekly basis in Minnesota, and I don't see his team getting extra breaks from the intimidated umpires. While I think it makes a difference with the players in the end, it really doesn't do much good in other facets of the game. Macha is a very cerebral guy, and as long as he's constantly communicating with the players and letting them know where they stand, everything will be just fine.
  7. Kendall is garbage? Oddly, I was thinking the same thing about Suppan. Unfortunately, we're going to have to put up with Suppan a lot longer than Kendall.
  8. Has this gone too far? Maybe. Bottom line is that it'll be fun as long as we're winning. Like I said in my blog, the Brewers' obsession (*wink wink*) with the Cardinals has to stop, and the Cardinals aren't going to stop it, as they're too busy crying about it. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif
  9. As bad a call as I thought it was, and as much as I advocate a manager sticking up for his players, I think Macha popping off to the reporters is going to say more than him getting ejected from a game his team was just not likely to win ... no matter what. I love Gardenhire, but it's not like he has a long string of championships on his resume. The fiery demeanor isn't always a good thing, either, as he's found himself tossed from games he never should have been tossed from because he couldn't control his temper.
  10. The Cardinals are too classy to throw at someone. If a Brewer player gets hit, it's because the ball got away from the pitcher.
  11. Thumbs up. I also agree that we should pin this thread for the rest of the season. I never thought there would be a team I disliked more than the Cubs in this division, but St. Louis is well on the way.
  12. I will probably get raked for saying this, but I give Macha credit for what he's doing. One of the things a new manager has to do is make his own evaluations on guys. Hall has gotten his shot, and I'm pretty sure we're getting close to the time where he has to look at platooning someone who can hit right-handed pitching.
  13. Sorry, I forgot the smilie. I was about 47% sarcastic. Nothing is worth shutting the season down at this point. I'm seriously going to be peeved if we can't do some damage against Baker, because he's been getting lit up like a Christmas tree for most of the season so far. That said, it's still a winning roadtrip, and I don't care what you say, that's a good thing. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif
  14. This shows you how little I pay attention. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif I still submit that this guy's stuff ain't that good. He'll be middle relief or Triple A within a month. He needs to develop his secondary pitches before he can be a starter.
  15. If they can't beat Scott Baker tomorrow, they might as well shut down for the season. He could make a Double-A team look like Murderer's Row right now.
  16. Just keep telling yourselves: Winning roadtrip. Winning roadtrip. Winning roadtrip. Give me a winning roadtrip, no matter the circumstances, and I'll take it every time. I'm just waiting for the team that calls up three new pitchers who have never faced the Brewers before to pitch a series against them. It seems we always struggle against this type of pitcher, no matter how blase their stuff appears to be. Winning roadtrip. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif
  17. This is, um, frustrating. Nothing like making fresh meat look like Cy Young. Dude can't even get his secondary pitches in there for strikes.
  18. I guess I don't see them hitting baseballs hard at all. There have been a couple, but not overwhelming. Just as I type this, Hardy laces a double to the gap. Me = Stupid.
  19. I'm probably wrong, but I think it's easier to take a guy with great stuff and teach him how to pitch than it is to take a guy who knows how to pitch and teach him stuff. You can't teach stuff like you can teach "how" to pitch, IMHO. My point? I don't think Parra's a lost cause.
  20. You give Jeff Suppan Manny Parra's stuff, or you give Manny Parra Jeff Suppan's brain, and you have one of the best pitchers in the game. Separately, they're just blah.
  21. No, but you still have to make him throw pitches. The Twins bullpen is much less than good. The Brewers pulled this crap with Carlos Silva a few years back, and he threw like 75 pitches in a complete game win. I know you don't want to fall behind 0-2 all the time, but you have to try to see a few pitches.
  22. Obviously, Mr. Parra isn't, either. Nibbles is back, and it just burned the Crew.
  23. These are my favorite weekends of the season. At least the Twins win if we lose, which isn't always a guarantee otherwise. Would have liked to see Slowey forced to throw a few more pitches, but hopefully we can get to him.
  24. I just laugh it off at this point. They want to think of the Brewers as brash and disrespectful, and that's fine. I just don't see a lot of difference between our team and the rest of baseball.
  25. If Soriano can take the low ball and golf it out of the park, why do we keep throwing them to him? I know Suppan relies on low stuff, but that's just asking for it when dealing with Fonzy the Butcher.
