  1. I am not challenging anyone but I am actually just curious the reasons why people would have a problem with Brenly. I have never had a problem with him as an on-air announcer. Is there something about how he managed in Arizona that shows a potential problem?
  2. I can honestly say that baseball would be dead to me. If the Brewers ever left Milwaukee, I would never go to another baseball game again. Never.
  3. Very cool tool you have created! In looking at the 40 man roster, I was wondering based on his minor league success and lack thereof stat-wise, why the Brewers continue to protect Alex Periard. Just confessing my own ignorance more than anything. Also, I note that the stats for some of hte players only go through 2006.
  4. The top four in the lineup was 9 - 17 and the team only managed 3 runs. Bad luck day.
  5. The five stages of reaction to an April Fools Joke. First, a shout of excitement. Then realization that this is a joke. Then extreme anger at being had. Then grief that the trade did not really happen. And finally acceptance at the well-played prank.
  6. I am no organizational-apologist but what is it with these aged-veterans and their sense of entitlement? Where does Schoenweis get the idea that he is somehow owed a spot on the roster? He cannot possibly think that he is more valuable than Parra and/or Narveson, one of whom will be the second lefty in the 'pen this year. I find it incredible that he can be in the league this long and not understand how things are.
  7. I am definitely still watching with enjoyment, at least in the half inning where the team bats. That said, when the team is this far out of it, I find myself lingering a little longer on the other stuff that's on (i.e. 2009 WSOP) before I switch back. It is especially interesting seeing Fielder make a run at the League RBI Leader and HR charts. I also enjoy seeing whether McGeehee and Escobar can succeed so that we have some hope for next year at 3B/2B and SS.
  8. To echo some of the thoughts of others and to add my own: I really like the layout and appreciate your personal thoughts on each item you post. In fact, your personal thoughts are a big part of what makes the blog interesting. While it is easy to find straight news from guys like McCalvy and Tom Hardicourt, I am more interested in reading what others are thinking about various topics involving the Brewers. Regular updates to the blog are also important to drawing readers in. I will continue to check you out. A drawback for me is the typographical errors. I understand that blogs are intended to be significantly less formal than news articles and other media. However, for some reason, typos and misspellings always trip me up when I read someone else's work. (I admit that this is quite hypocritical of me since I often make such errors as well.)
  9. Another great interview. I can't believe just how many topics you were able to cover without making it seem rapid-fire. Particularly interesting was the discussion of Charlie Finley out in Oakland. I don't think an owner could get away with anything even remotely approaching that kind of behavior these days. The fans, the league and the players association would put so much pressure on the owner as to make it impossible to be that cheap. Finley makes the Marlins people look like George Steinbrenner.
  10. Great site. I am especially impressed by the amount of content from what looks to be two people. Keep up the good work.
  11. All time classic interview. I remember every time Brooks came in to pinch hit, I expected he would get a hit. He had at least one very good season as a ph and rp with the Brewers.
  12. While I don't care for Happy Youngster's hobby, it is crazy what others are making up about him. Take a look at this posting from NBC Washington "Marlins Rookie the Victim of the Homer Hostage Taker" which essentially defames HY for no reason. What? You would think that the facts speak for themselves without lying about what happened.
  13. It is too bad that he cannot go down to get some regular at bats. You can see the frustration on his face during the last few unsuccessful at bats. It was particularly unfortunate that some people felt the need to boo Nelson after his strikeout Tuesday night against the Pirates. I fail to see the point of booing someone who is obviously trying to be successful and has not, as far as I know, complained or shown a lack of intensity. That said, I don't think that Nelson should be retained on the major league roster for more than three or four weeks going forward if he cannot start seeing some success at the plate. There are certainly other guys out there - veterans - that can get a pinch hit every now and then. While I understand the concept of small sample size, that is the nature of the position of pinch hitter.
  14. I would like to get at least 25 wins each out of Parra and Gallardo. Keep in mind, however, that even Sheets last year only had 13 wins out of 31 starts and I am sure that most people would agree that he had a pretty good year last year. 27 wins is definitely on the high end of what we should expect out of those two. That said, I would expect about 10 wins a piece from Suppan, Bush and Looper and maybe 6 to 8 from McClung. Adding that to 27 wins from Parra/Gallardo, that would put the Brewers at about 65 wins from their starters alone. If the Brewers can equal their 2008 total of ~27 wins from their non-McClung relievers, that would put the team right around 90 wins and a playoff spot.
  15. Please tell me this is a little bit of misdirection to throw the fans off track rather than an actual "idea". The article mentions Kendall's career stats as a potential justification for the move but does not mention Kendall's diminished performance over the past three years. Rickie is certainly a better option.
  16. The Netherlands / Dominican Republic game this evening was truly terrific. It had all the makings of a classic game. Most of the Netherlands' pitchers were guys from the Holland Professional baseball league that no one has ever heard of and only two position players on the team had had any major league experience; and that includes Randall Simon. The score was tied at zero until the top of the 11th when the D.R. got a run after Holland's Right Fielder completely misplayed a ball that went for a triple. Then, in the bottom of the 11th, the Netherlands tied it up when the same Right Fielder that blew it in the top of the inning lined a single to right. He ended up scoring to win the game. Great stuff.
  17. I really enjoy the WBC. Last night, even though it was only 39 degrees outside, I felt for just a moment like it was midsummer with games that count. It was particularly enjoyable seeing the United States playing better than last time.
  18. Looking over the play by play for this game and previous games, it looks like Corey Hart has been hitting well. For anyone that has actually seen him hitting, how has he looked? Is he swinging at better pitches than at the end of last year?
  19. "So now, we start from scratch." I love this part of the quote from Dodgers management. It shows that Manny is further away from any kind of deal than he was last week. It is as if Manny and his agent have not seen what is going on with every other free agent in baseball. When guys like Ray Durham and Gagne are getting nothing more than minor league, non-guaranteed deals, it is clear that the economics of baseball have changed substantially (even since Texeira and Sabathia signed their deals.) Additionally, this one is not all on Boras. If Manny wanted, he could have accepted that offer. I highly doubt he would have caught any flak from the players union for accepting the Dodgers' deal. What are they thinking?
  20. Darn right they should put up a banner!!! It was a well-earned accomplishment to make the playoffs this year and should be recognized by the organization. Plus, that '82 "banner" looks very lonely and pathetic out there. It needs some friends.
  21. As far as positional players go, JJ Hardy is the only player I would look to lock up longer term with the type of deal Billy Hall received a couple years ago. He has gotten better every year and his .821 OPS for 2008 has to put him in the top 10 shortstops in the league. Besides, his defense is solid. Hardy is a premium player at a premium position.
  22. A personal favorite for me was Mike Rivera's bases clearing double followed by Kapler's walk off home run against the Nationals
