  1. Well, that's certainly documentation that even the best can be victim to the mental side of the game. I'd guess a 10 handicapper member at Augusta at least gets the drop-zone shot in the green area 75% - 90% of the time (it's what, 100 yards?) during a normal round. Just amazing to see that.
  2. I think it's more based on the look of the guy and his swing. He could post a .350/.365/.375 line and I'd still look at the guy and expect him to hit the ball like Ruth.
  3. I think those Schwarber projections on Fangraphs seem a bit pessimistic. Just for the sake of comparison: Schwarber age 22: .246/.355/.487 (half-season) Fielder age 22: .271/.347/.483 (full-season) Granted, Fielder's improvement by age 23 was extraordinary, but I think projecting Schwarber for .260/.360/.520 wouldn't be ridiculous.
  4. I'd have given him a chance to get out of the inning in 2-3 pitches, but even then, suppose he goes into the 9th and the first batter gets into a deep count before striking out; you still risk him getting up to ~120 pitches without even walking anybody.

  6. It seems like we've had a rough couple of years trying to watch USMNT players in Europe, but things are looking up. Miazga is starting again for Chelsea, now I'm not sure whether I want to watch Fabian Johnson for Monchengladbach vs. Ingolstadt or Miazga for Chelsea vs. Swansea!
  7. Hate to see this for Schwarber: http://espn.go.com/mlb/story/_/id/15165331/kyle-schwarber-chicago-cubs-season-torn-acl
  8. One game up on the Cardinals.
  9. If this were a contending team, there's no way I'd want to risk letting Scooter Gennett try to learn how to handle LHP's. But, in this scenario I see no reason than to let him have his hacks. Should he learn to be serviceable against LHP's, he'll be a solid player for the next few years.
  10. Well, that Marcus Paige shot was about as close to the basketball-equivalent of Rodgers' playoff Hail Mary as you can get. Hopefully somebody gives him a look in the 2nd round of the draft. What a great game though, I'd hazard a guess that both teams played one of their best 3-4 games of the season. Villanova should be a title contender next year, and UNC will be a solid top-10 team if everybody returns. Unfortunately, Kryzewski has assembled himself quite an impressive group of talent in Durham...
  11. Goals for this evening: 1. Win vs. Guatemala 2. Advance vs. Colombia 3. Cap-tie Pulisic (sounds like odds of him going to Croatia are low, but Neven Subotic says Hi!)
  12. Big weekend for USMNT and the U-23 squad. U-23's are currently tied 1-1 with Colombia in Barranquila. Colombia has dominated the possession but weren't able to break through until a ~70th minute penalty. No word on where Christian Pulisic is at the moment, would have thought he'd be with the U-23's as a late attacking option but perhaps Dortmund wouldn't release him or they did not feel he was worth disrupting the chemistry for. I have a bad feeling about Guatemala. Without Fabian Johnson, still without Aaron Johannsson (now for the rest of Werder's season)...John Brooks will need to be huge on the back line, as neither Howard nor Guzan instills much confidence right now. From what I hear, Ethan Horvath, who was knocked out of the game in Colombia with an injury, has looked good in Norway this season, but for now we've just got to hope that either Howard or Guzan can find their old form for a few games at a time.
  13. I actually saw the Raleigh first round game tickets on Groupon for something like $50, and I wasn't even tempted to go despite UNC being placed there. Staying home, watching 3 games at a time on three different devices, and having good food and beer is a far more attractive option to me.
  14. Gonzaga and Wichita State are two #11's that I think I can see making the sweet 16. Gonzaga is a 1.5 point favorite vs. Seton Hall and then faces a weak #3 in Utah, while Wichita State faces a tougher route but is very highly rated by Pomeroy and ESPN's BPI. I also think Stephen F. Austin may be a good bet if you're looking to be a bit crazier.
  15. Kenpom ratings of top five teams: South: {1, 5, 13, 21, 23} West: {9, 8, 17, 22, 24} East: {4, 15, 6, 7, 14} Midwest: {2, 3, 29, 18, 10} They did a horrible job with the Pac-12. I have no idea how Utah is justified as a 3-seed, or Oregon State as a 7-seed for that matter. Indiana, Purdue, Kentucky, and I'm sure at least a few others are more deserving of the 3. It's hard for me to reconcile Oregon's non-conference schedule with that of a #1 seed (two sub-100 losses). Realistically Virginia probably is one of the four best teams in the country, so there's no problem with me on that one, but giving a #1 to Oregon instead of Michigan State is pretty silly. Duke was given a gift of a bracket, and as much as I hate to say it they have a pretty decent chance of getting out of it.
  16. I legitimately had no idea he was still bounding around the majors. Wow, 2011 seems like ages ago.
  17. Sounds like Pulisic has been back down with the U-19's. Realistically this probably makes sense for him, he's clearly gotten to experience some important minutes but at this age he's got to keep his match fitness.
  18. I will never forget this guy: http://deadspin.com/man-applies-for-und-head-coach-job-cites-playing-madde-1481626884
  19. There should be a tournament of shame for the worst 16 major conference teams. For some reason unbeknownst to me, I turned on the Wake Forest (1-13 ACC) vs. Boston College (0-14 ACC). Four minutes left in the half, Wake leads 37 - 4! Note: Exclamation denotes excitement, not factorial.
  20. UNC could be a pretty short-lived tourney team if they can't get their outside shooting figured out. No idea why they were even shooting 3's rather than pounding it inside to Brice Johnson tonight, but 1-13 on what were decent looks is brutal. They're shooting 28% from beyond the arc in ACC play. Last year, pretty much the same team (one year younger) shot 37% in ACC play. Ol' Roy better have some voodoo magic in one of them plaid jackets.
  21. Caught this in the email they sent me today: "Unserved Fans: MLB will offer live streaming of any in-market team's telecasts produced by Comcast, Root Sports, or Fox regional sports networks to any customer who is unable to obtain multi-channel video provider distributor service or virtual multi-channel video provider distributor service at his or her residence. " I'm not sure what this means exactly, but perhaps this is aimed at solving some of the 'living in Iowa, six teams blacked out with few shown on local cable' issue? But, if I were in Wisconsin I'd just get a VPN.
  22. Stone has been suspended for the Minnesota game. How very brave of Mark Turgeon to sit him out of a game against such a terrifying oponent (Kenpom #179).
